I am a dog trainer and border collie (and many other breed) lover who continually learns and practices new skills. I believe that the dog in front of you has a lot to teach you.
My dogs have had health issues (epilepsy is one) and behavior challenges (including severe separation anxiety), so I've learned about effective, science based forms of dog training. Your dog, whether sweet, excitable, mischievous or extra smart, has something to teach you. A challenging dog challenges us to learn more! Lovely video! I’ve been working on this with my 8 month poodle puppy. He has a natural retrieve and loves to put things in his mouth but I’m struggling to keep him from chewing on the object while it’s in his mouth. He does okay in a retrieve situation where he’s focused on bringing the dumbbell back to me but if I have him take it while he’s stationary he either wants to chew on it with his back teeth, spit it out right away, or walk away with it. Should I just go back to practicing the split second holds or do you have any other advice? Thanks again for explaining things so well!
Thanks for the very informative and thoughtful videos. I am wondering, since these were recorded 5 years ago, if Asha is still with you. Did you have any further difficulties with the parathyroid condition or subsequent problems since their removal? My almost 15 year old Australian shepherd was just diagnosed and I am having to make this very difficult decision of proceeding with this surgery or not, given her age. Just wondering what life possibly looks like some years down the road.
My dogs love there drive, iv got two Border Collies and they like there walk but their drives and visits is more important than the walk .the old dog doesn't get a walk every day because she is so slow and has other issues with age that a walk is not needed everyday, its being out and about that she needs
It might be worth sealing the play dough with a layer of liquid soap or something so it doesn't stick to the plaster. Also, it would be safer to wear a mask when mixing plaster
I had & worked with BCs growing up, as a kid. BEST animal/ pet experience of my life. If you like kids/ toddlers you’ll love BCs because they’re about that smart & energetic! 🤣♥ I absolutely adore BCs, but they’re FARM DOGS. They NEED to work. Not want, NEED. If you’re in a city, Big Nope unless you can devote 2-3 hours a day of direct work / exercise- even then you’ll have issues. Living in the burbs with a big yard & enclosed run? It’ll be better, but they still need devoted time each & every day. It’s not about us, THEY deserve it. And your life will be he// if they don’t get it…😳 I’m “Presidential Aged” 😜🤷🏽♂now and feel it’d be incredibly unfair to adopt a BC pup at my age , BUT I would consider taking on a slower, aged, abandoned BC because they love people & are angelically mellow & deserve a comfortable , loved end of days. My .02 cents as a former trainer.
I also love the way they herd you up if you're in a group and know if you're not well. Good guard dogs and very protective too. On walks they are always in the look out for any dangers - protecting the flock😊
I'm trying to teach this to my young dog who's extremely enthusiastic, we can't get duration down because he immediately starts barking and throwing his paws up, any tips for teaching an enthusiastic dog duration 😅
I recently lost my very first border collie, Riley Jane. She was 14 and seemingly extremely healthy, so the loss was very unexpected and hurt tremendously. She was my sweetest bubby ever. I got her when I was only 20 and she was my first proper adult pet. I was in way over my head with her haha! At first I thought she would make me lose my marbles and I had so many days where I wanted to give up, but instead I persevered and became a better person FOR her. We moved across the country together, we went through my divorce together, she was with me for the many years I was on my own. I love her forever. I’m getting another border collie soon. Her name is Luanne and I’m so excited to have her as another friend. Riley will never ever be replaced, but I also know that she would never want me to feel alone forever either. She’s who made me love border collies and taught me how to be the best I can be. Your videos have always meant a lot to me. I’m so sorry about Keegan, but just know that from some random person on the internet, I’m sending you all my love. When they leave us, they take such a large chunk of our heart with them, but even with that pain, it feels truly worth it for all that they give us when they’re here. Keegan knew that he was worth it, he knew your love was true. ❤
"working" dogs or dogs that are as healthy as possible because even if in most times for tens of thousands of years since there is no records of how the first ever in nature amazing bond between (even if functionally similar both being social species based on high intelligence) two distant biological species started humans have been for a long time abusing the dogs' loyalty and trust sometimes being healthy as that is (big suprprise) contributes to how they learn and perform basically the default coat of wolves we call dogs is the double coat one that huskies and some other breeds have that does the most protection both from heat and cold through its structure and oil distribution
Thanks for the video! I’m 2 days in with my new 10 week old border collie! His herding instincts are impeccable I’m hoping to shift focus to sports (frisbee and ball) more than herding my other dogs 😅
I have a male smooth coat border collie. he's the best. he never barks; in fact, he barely makes any sound at all, he's as quiet as a church mouse in everything he does he also doesn't care about other dogs, he ignores them. impressing me is all he cares about. he refuses food while working, even cooked bacon. I have had success getting him to drink water while he's working, but it takes some convincing my calming exercise is going for a walk. I make it clear that there's no expectations, and that he's free to sniff around and, simply, relax.
How do we begin to introduce our new six month old border collie to our 2/10-year-old cats? As of now, we have our cats on our back porch, but we do not want to leave it like this. We have only had the dog for three days, I don’t know if he has ever had cats in his life before
When walking My 6 month Labrador, he always lunges at other dogs as he wants to run and play. Also, if I let him play with other dogs he does not recall EVER! I become invisible! Should I stop walking him in the park/fields until he’s older? It’s so frustrating and tiring. Not all owners want a rather large, over excited puppy jumping all over their dog. Help 😵💫
could I ask some opinions about the breed? atm I have long coat chihuahua he is super social and love to be with other dogs and humans super friendly too but been more and more thinking of getting another dog someday I always been interested in border collies.. any experiences about the breed how well they get along with small dogs? I would love to have running buddy! also like to teach tricks! my chi knows 15 tricks he also join in camping with me and we often love to do long walks in forests on summer <3 but think it would be nice if he will some day have a buddy :D havent decided anything yet just checking breeds that I always liked and hearing opinions before making final decision!
this is sooooo helpful to me - I just adopted a two year old dog from a home where he was on a farm, but I live in an urban area, so there are a lot of new sights and sounds for him that he’s never experience before. I knew house training was going to be different for him than most dogs because of the big change, and it’s really helpful to have someone lay out for me how much his environment can affect how/when/where he potties. thank you so much!!
I just rescued a dog named Zion & he doesn’t really know how to play. So I want to teach him how to fetch. I’m struggling to get him to “take” the object right now but I’m am staying patient. I will let you know how it goes. Thank you for the tips
