The ATT post show area was amazing for the time. You could make free long distance calls to friends around the country. They had a soundproof booth with a giant touch dial phone inside, like it was six feet tall and you'd push each button with your whole hand.
I don’t trust the liberal numbskulls to do the right thing with Spaceship Earth. They probably will theme it after a movie which I hate. That’s what they have done to everything else. They have made EPCOT into Magic Kingdom #2.
Buckminster Fuller did not invent the geodesic dome. He worked for a while at the US Patent Office and copied many things from obscure patents that he thought were never going to be seen. But modern patent searches exposed his many plagiarisms. He never patented his "ideas" claiming they were for the good of humanity. But in reality it was because he knewthat patent searches would be made in order to file those patents and get approval. The 'prior art' as it was termed would quickly be discovered. The "geodesic" dome shape as he termed it was patented in 1875 I believe, as was the same map projection idea. Even his Dymaxion car was closely copied from a French design.
Thanks for the correction. When I first read your comment I was all "pfft. No way." But you're absolutely right. When I watched it I think I literally went "GAH!" So thanks for pointing it out, it helps keep me on the look out in future episodes. And thank you so much for watching and the kind words.
@@disfarers You're very welcome. Looking forward to more! By the way--did you do research on the Bell System? I'm not sure how old you are, but I was born the year they were divested. I'm somewhat of a telecom buff, so feel free to let me know if you ever need info in that regard. As far as Disney goes it's been ages. When I was last at EPCOT, Horizons was still in service. I hate what they've done to the parks.
I didn't dive too deeply into Bell Systems, though I did learn quite a bit more than I put into this episode. I left it out because the information just diverted too far from the topic at hand and it slowed my pacing too much. It sounds like I'm only a handful of years older than you though. I will definitely keep you in mind if I ever find myself looking for a knowledgeable telecom person (I never know where episodes are going to lead me. I'm working on an episode right now where I wish I knew a car mechanic.) I keep an open heart and mind about every change made to the parks, but I have to admit that I'm overall disappointed with what's continually done to Epcot. The latest opening of an alcohol stand alongside Mickey's meet and greet is a testament to how low things have fallen from the times Walt. But I'm always hopeful. The parks always change. You should totally check out the parks though. There's so MUCH since you've gone (I'm guessing mid to late 90s was the last time you visited Walt Disney World). I get that a lot of the more recent decisions have been dicey but they're still absolutely amazing overall!
The Global Neighborhood was introduced with the Jeremy Irons narration. During Walter Cronkite it was still Earth Station with Guest Relations and Worldkey. My source: me. I’ve worked at WDW since 1989 and worked Spaceship Earth in 1991. It was still Earth Station then.
!!!!! Okay, I'm sorry to hassle you with more questions, but what resorts? I'm always working on a resort episode and they're really tough to make but I seriously enjoy making them. Any interesting not-so-known information you'd be willing to share would mean a great deal to me. Resorts and anything about the parks mind you. It's so incredible that you've worked across so much of the property!!!
WOW! A signature of the man himself?!!! That's so amazing! Did you get to meet him or did you come across the signature somewhere? What other signatures do you have? Sorry for the questions but I'm just so curious. These people are literally legends!
I have to admit that during this current Disney era it certainly appears to be the case. But there's always hope a new, more Walt-like, era is around the corner. Thanks so much for watching!
GAH! You're absolutely right! I can't believe I made that mistake. Thanks for taking the time to correct my mistake. I really appreciate it. And for taking the time to watch the video too! All around big thanks!
Disney: (FL) let’s theme the whole back of a building so it doesn’t interrupt the sight lines from a whole other park. (CA) lets make sure all the major landmarks (like the castle, Matterhorn, big Thunder, the Batuu rocks, Space Mountain, the Carthay Circle tower, Guardian’s, Pixar wheel, Cars Land rocks, and grizzly peak are all well hidden from one another (or at least blended) to make sure people stay immersed Universal (California): yeah, you can see the Hogwarts castle clearly from the Simpson’s area, but who cares
in your earlier vids i enjoyed your enthusiastic narration however it seems as tho over time you've amped it to a point where it sometimes feel i am being yelled at. just a constructive criticism: you don't have to hit everything so hard, trust the material will do that for you. ty
I really enjoy criticism, good and bad, and wholeheartedly agree and know all about my voice issue. I had developed a lung problem that effected my breathing and it took a number of months to recover. Then I had to retrain my voice back to normal. I'm ahead in episodes, so you'll probably notice my voice return to normal gradually over the next two to three episodes (I'm 4 episodes ahead at the moment). I really appreciate the honesty and encouragement. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
I thought I made an understandable case for Red. I mean, if even Walt Disney thought the Auction scene was possibly a step too far and there were designs for a female Red pirate that was never used, then I don't think approving the change is cowardly. Also, Marc Davis' design for the portrait of Red at Disneyland's Pirates has never been removed and is still widely favored by fans. The character concept was interesting 60 years before wokeness became a thing. I think I even admitted in this episode that early on I didn't like the change, but after learning some neat facts, I changed my opinion. The rides are supposed to change. Not totally altering subjects here, but I was on Pirates at the Magic Kingdom last weekend and they added new smells during two scenes. I like those changes too.
I developed a lung issue that took a few months to recover from. My voice will start to sound normal again over the next two episodes. Good ears on you! Thanks for your support, as always!!!
Can't thank you enough! I set the video to drop today but thought I programmed it for noon. I guess I goofed. I know how much you enjoy the attraction videos. It's good to hear you enjoyed it. Thanks so much for watching!
@@disfarers Yea i saw it said it dropped at midnight. I thought i bet he got the the am and pm wrong lol. Thats an easy thing to do. Yea the attractions are my favorite. I find them interesting from the concept to the engineering and you touch it all giving a complete video!
I didn't know about the moving ears myself until researching this video! Apparently, from what I've heard but can't confirm, Disney still to this day can't get a moving ear concept to function because of the weight issue. I can't thank you enough for watching and commenting. Thanks so much!
In 2023 we took my son for his 5th birthday to WDW. My mom came with us. Her only caveat to the whole trip was “he has to ride dumbo with me first” how could I say no? To me it’s the kind of ride that you don’t think about when you leave or even a month after the trip but when you see it or get on it, it’s a flood of nostalgia and joy.
You bring up a great point I wish I hammered harder in the episode. It really is an attraction you don't think about so much until you have kids or grandchildren of your own. There's just something really lasting about it. You nailed it by using the word "nostalgia". Thanks so much for watching and commenting. And I hope you guys and especially your son enjoyed the visit!
You forgot to talk about Walter Lantz he owned Oswald from 1929 to 1984 he made all the Post-Disney + Post-Winkler Oswald cartoons also you showed a Lantz cartoon Charles Mintz and Margent J. Winkler only made Oswald cartoons in late 1928 and early 1929 only.
We’re gonna reclaim Disney from woke idiots. Not gonna let every iconic American thing be destroyed by corrupt evil morons like Iger the terrible and his rabid woke mob.
4:11 - At EXPO67, this geodesic dome / sphere served as the USA pavilion. I think, seen to the right here is the USSR pavilion across a bit of the river on another island. After 1967, the 'glass sphere' was filled with gardens, becoming the Biosphere.
Wow you really know a lot about this! I supposing you live in the area or have been there, but I have to ask, were you at the EXPO67? Thanks so much for sharing and watching by the way!
Great video and thanks for making it. This pavilion is most definitely one of the most detailed and is a wonderful place to spend time in. In my opinion, The Three Caballeros addition to the attraction really just killed a previously excellent experience. The previous ride was so peaceful and highlighted so many wonderful areas throughout Mexico. Unfortunately we now have Donald Duck SHOUTING constantly throughout the entire ride. It's so distracting to what is otherwise a beautiful setting. This was a cheap and quite terrible IP overlay that ruined an otherwise wonder experience. It's not like anything is being added here. It's just literally a cheap and fast IP overlay for no reason other than to make babies and young kids laugh. I mean, there are so many other places that can happen, for the life of me I cannot see any reason why they put this cheap overlay on this previously wonderful attraction.
Thanks so much for watching and appreciation for this episode. And I can't agree with you more. The Mexico Pavilion is a great place to spend time and is very special to me. With that said, I have to say that I also agree with your sentiment about the Gran Fiesta attraction. The reason I didn't cover too much of it in this episode, besides the time factor, was because I intend to make an episode going over the attraction's history and what exactly happened to it over the decades. In addition to what you've already added, I feel the connection to the ancient peoples of Mexico, as well as the architecture, sculptures and art, were made into a lavish backdrop rather than properly highlighted. Humbly speaking, as I try to do in my videos, I very much prefer a balance of history, education and fun stuff. Awesome comment by the way! I can't thank you enough.
My favorite ending was the 1994-2007 version with Jeremy Irons. The music was to me, the absolute best yet. The future city that is shown with all of the fiber optics along with the music was always so moving and memorable to me. It was positively the best. I do not personally like the current cartoon ending. It just feels cheap and quick. I have to wonder if that beautiful city of the future is still there just hidden behind walls. The original space station ports were there for years just not lit so it was difficult to see (on purpose). Anyway, that was my favorite version with the most incredible music, the calming voice of Jeremy Irons and that incredible ending.
I 100 percent agree with you that the Irons ending had the best ending out of any version! And I agree that the music was amazing, however, I found every version's music to be fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing, it's really enjoy hearing different takes and perspectives. It's like getting to experience attractions through another lens. And hey, thanks so much for watching too. I wish I could have found better photos of the space station, finding photos in such dark places in the 80s and 90s is rough.
I was just there yesterday and yes, the sound of Dame Judi Dench's voice is exquisite for the role of narrating this ride. Thank you all for making it possible and thank you for all your hard work in researching this!
It was such a pleasure making this episode. I loved learning all about Spaceship Earth and then I got to share all of that fun info with others. It's so awesome you got to ride it yesterday, but I can only image being outside in that heat!
I was fairly new at writing scripts when this episode came out, so I didn't have nearly all of the resources I do today in uncovering awesome facts. I think I heard something about this, but maybe I didn't know how to incorporate it into the episode. I was also scared at the time of what I would possibly have up on the screen while explaining something. Today I just plow through and assume I'll figure something out. But I'm going to look in on this Roy Disney/Prince Charming Regal Carrousel story. I'll definitely be replying to this later. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
It is me, Mark Silverman. I grew up watching so much Twilight Zone and I was obsessed with Disneyland and Walt Disney World, so getting the job to narrate a Twilight Zone ride for Disney seemed like a Twilight Zone episode in itself.
I can't tell you how astounding and amazing it is to know you watched my episode!!! Or the fact that you took the time to comment! Thank you so much. It's so amazing. And you did such a phenomenal job. I grew up watching the Twilight Zone as well. My father had shelves of VHS recordings that he taped; it must have been nearly every episode (he loved the Twilight Zone as well) and I can't even try to recall how many times I watched through all of them. And not once until I researched this episode did I ever realize that it wasn't Rod Serling's voice the entire way through on the Tower of Terror (which I've been on dozens of times). Really, you are so great! All I can say is thank you about a thousand more times!!!
I can't agree with you more! I haven't watched it on television in years, but I really miss not knowing what episode I was going to get. There was a thrill in NOT knowing what level of awesome I was going to experience. I also don't think I participated in many Fourth of July's growing up, because there was always a Twilight Zone marathon and I circled my day off around it.
If you are still wondering why spaceship earth lost the att sponsorship. At that time they were in the process of aquiring bell south. That is what the ceo at the time Dave told me.
I don't fully understand. Why would that cause them them to drop the sponsorship? Thanks so much for watching and commenting by the way. Really appreciated.
Another great history lesson! Great work! I think Disney World should have a Walt statue at each park. Gad they put one in Epcot recently. None of the parks would be with out Walt’s original vision and to me the statue represents that. I always stop to take a picture of the partner statue at each visit.
That's an excellent notion! Maybe the introduction of the Walt statue at Epcot is the beginning of something there for the other parks. This episode was in the works for well over a year, I don't know how much I'm going to look at it after spending so many hours hanging around the one at MK and DL. I still love it, mind you. It's amazing! It's just that I feel like I know it so well, I'm not sure how often I'm going to check it out in the years to come. As I think on it though, I'm probably still going to check it out every time I walk past it.
What's up with your channel by the way? There was no episode last week! I think I went directly to your channel like three times over the weekend to see if I missed something.
Aside from a general gesture, I have always interpreted Walt extended hand as one of guiding Mickey through the park, through millennium! Frozen in time, it’s a beautiful piece
I LOVE seeing the footage of the OG Dreamfinder on the Dreamcatcher vehicle!! The destruction of that scene was such a horrible loss to the attraction! 😢
I can't help but agree. There always rumors about them redesigning the attraction again, but who's to know what it would become. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
First time I rode it, when I got off, I said to the cast member, “where does it go now?” And he promptly opened the elevator doors and let me watch the car back up and move over into the load shaft!!!
FUN FACT: when Disney went to Otis about doing a “drop shaft” ride, Otis originally declined, saying, “We have spent our entire career making sure elevators DON’T drop like that!!!”
By Far and Away the best video ever put together for anybody above the age of 30, it's hard to believe the atrium has been gone for 9 years already!!!!
That's such amazingly high praise! Thank you so much!!! And about the atrium, I know right? I really miss walking around it, hearing the water trickling, taking in that Polynesian Resort smell. But hey, thank you so much for watching and commenting!
I think his approach is my favorite of them all, cause what makes animation so unique is showing the feelings and emotions of the characters to feel the moment they're in. When Mowgli tries to wake up Baloo after the fight with Sher Kahn it really resonates w/ me as an adult still it was heartwarming that entire segment. Well done video, this deserves more likes and attention what a remarkable man, I'm learning animation and have been glued to the illusion of life for days now.
It's such an amazing book, right? It's so awesome to hear about someone else appreciating. Ollie Johnston was such an inspiration to so many animators. I feel so terrible about it, but I don't recall if I actually saw him in person or it was a video I saw when I was very young, but I recalled seeing an old animator when I was a kid and I saw his hand shaking and I thought that he must draw left handed. And I was so surprised when he sat down to draw with his right hand! And the drawing was absolutely flawless. My mind was completely blown. Again, I was much younger and I can't recall if this happened in reality or on a screen, but I guess it doesn't really matter, the lasting impression he had on me has stayed with me decades later. Ollie was a great man and incredible artist.
You are so detailed… I love it! Im a Disney Fine Artist and I love leaning!!!! I remember POLY had Moana Minnie’s Fun Hut (arcade) back in the mid 80’s. Have you ever come across this in your research? I wonder if the building still exists and if so, where is it? Id love to go back and reminisce
You're a Fine Artist for Disney?!!! That's so amazing! Do you mind telling what exactly you do for them? I'm so curious! It's so interesting!!! I saw pictures of the fun hut arcade during research, but couldn't scrounge up enough details to add anything worthwhile to the episode. I recall being at the resort during the years it was there but it's like my memory just erased it. I believe it's entrance was between where Captain Cook's and Trader Sam's Grog Grotto currently resides. Oh and Thank you so much for watching!!!
For your future reference: You keep mis-pronouncing "Chouinard". It is pronounced Chuunard.I know because I went to Chouinard and nobody I know that went to the art school ever pronounced like you have in this video and others. Just trying to help.
It's so awesome that you got to go to Chouinard! I'm not going to contest how you pronounce it, the place merged into California Institute of the Arts in 1970, so there aren't many that could correct how it's said. All I can say is that I listened to each and every one of Milt Kahl's and Marc Davis's interviews that I could find and I listened over and over to how they pronounced Chouinard, then I would pause and practice over and over saying how they said it. Back and forth repeating like that until I felt comfortable. I honestly fought hard to say it like them too. My natural tendency is to say it "show-rin-ard" (with an extra "r" in there). In the next episode where the school comes up, which is relatively soon, I'll double check myself though. Thanks for looking out and helping. And hey, thanks so much for watching too!
