Oh, the 80s were indeed a masterclass in horror! I'd say the 90s sort of picked up were the 80s left off and did a solid job at it by going a bit bigger in terms of production values, though they didn't produce as many masterpieces as the 80s for sure. That being said, we're on the same page completely with the second statement about children's horror!
For me as someone who grew up in the early 2000's rather than the 90's, some of the horror cartoons we had were mostly just one or two episodes of a "normal" series that would end up being uncharacteristically dark (Nasty Patty/Graveyard Shift for Spongebob for example among others). But a few other full horror standouts were Aaah Real Monsters, Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Invader Zim, and Courage the Cowardly Dog...(and then the probably unintentional horror of Mr. Meaty)
Oh, the early 2000s had some solid horror cartoons as well! As for Mr. Meaty, I had never heard of it until now and, after googling it, even just the blank stare of the two teens earns it an honorary horror badge :D
Spawn was more adult themed because it was on HBO where they would swear a lot. There are some honorable mentions such as Gravedale High, Piggsburg Pigs, Monster in my Pocket, Monster Force, and Darkstalkers.
Indeed, Spawn was for adults, it's why I mention that the people that allowed me to watch it thought it was aimed at kids when, it fact, it wasn't, so I got to know it as a supposed kids show :D Some awesome honorable mentions right there, by the way!
I had either the cartoon's on tv the video taoe cartoon movie or sega games and PS1 games witch is how i found out about the cartoons i had the McDonald's mighty max head's still got my mighty maxs hero's and villains together with my homies no bidy had homies in my naborhood
Ps2 survival horror was on a completely other level. Speaking of the thing they did make a video game that was approved by Clive barker man the thing on ps2 was so cool and the ideas they had just couldn’t keep up with modern day technology
I love classic cartoons, creators could get away with things some adult shows won’t allow anymore. Even Disney had a bit of a darker edge before the 2000s, but that was kid stuff.
I was born in '82 and The Real Ghostbusters cartoon every Saturday morning haunted me with "The Boogeyman Cometh" and "When Halloween Was Forever"... those episodes are up on YT on various channels... classick horror 80's cartoons.
Best episode of tales from the cryptkeeper was the one w that werewolf in the city n that part where those cool dude teenager guys were all like ‘caaalling all chiiii-iiicks’ while drivin thru some back alley
@@hauntown1058 I never saw the mighty max show but I had so many of the toys as a kid n I loved them so much I always wondered what they were supposed to be referencing ima bouta eBay 36 of em to my crib rn
Excuse the blunder xD I realized I'd done that after the video was completed, unfortunately! I made the video while sleep-deprived and this one passed through the cracks :(
Tales from the crypt keeper was a good cartoon, but it was campy. Mighty Max was cool. I thought it was more sci-fi/sorcery than horror though. Spawn was my show. The movie didn't live up though.
Good video. I loved all those cartoons you listed. Except for nightmare ned. I unfortunately never saw that. Maybe its cause im canadian and it might not have aired on our networks. I probably would have liked it though. Have you ever seen or heard of a canadian cartoon called freaky stories? It's similar to tales of the cryptkeeper. As in, the show starts with the host who was a cockroach and shared stories that happend to a "friend of a friend of mine". The show had a creepy vibe even if most of the stories weren't particularly scary. It premiered in 1995 as part of YTV's halloween broadcast known as "Dark Night". The premier episode is the best to watch cause the artwork was hand drawn and creepy. The later episodes were digitally drawn and had more of a cartoony aesthetic. Anyways great content. I will look out for more. Ps Other shows i enjoyed were Ahhh real monsters! and Creepy Crawlers
I was delighted with the nostalgia hit your video gane me & I agree completely with your list..thankyou so much for posting the links to the specific cartoons ❤ the 90s
I wholehartedly agree! There have been many good cartoons, anime, toys and videogames that have come later as well, but it feels like the creativity and passion that creators put in their products back in the 90s is somewhat missing today :(
Also in the usa spawn was such a huge deal (just do to its sales numbers inflated by the speculator market.) that it got coverage on the national news and was a household name from issue 1. If anything spawn is less well known now than he was in the 90s.
Spawn was in no way a cartoon aimed at kids, it airedlate at night on hbo. It was part of the adult animation boom of the 90s along with mtv’s liquid television and bevis and butthead
Oh man, I remember the Mighty Max cartoon (Tales from the Crypt-Keeper seems familiar but I don't think I actually saw it). I still remember a bit of the werewolf episode of Max and a couple other bits of the series. As for my favorite '90s horror cartoon, I know it's not actually from the 1990s but I didn't see it until years later since I was born literally the year before it came out, but my answer is The Real Ghostbusters. Yeah, the play the theme song way too much that even a beloved legendary tune gets tiresome, but it had so much variety (Jeanine actually putting on the suit and saving ass, a metric ton of enemies) and it was just so much fun to watch. One episode that always stuck with me was Drool the Dog-Faced Goblin.
I remember that one. They thought drool was the shape shifter they had been chasing. One of my favorite episodes is when the Ghostbusters fought a ghost at a chemical plant. They caught the ghost but the chemicals splashed on the Ghostbusters. Later their skin erupts with a tissue and they each have a body part on their chest..like an eye, ear, nose, and mouth. That's one of my favorites.
Oh, I know, that's why I mention in the video that the people that allowed me to engage with it thought it was for children when it was actually for adults 😆
@@hauntown1058 Most people barely remember it. I barely remember it. Yet everybody waxes nostalgic about Legends of the Hidden Temple as if it ran as long as Seinfeld.
Oh my goodness. I think, but I'm not sure, that I saw Nightmare Ned around the time it was first released. Maybe 2000 at the latest. I only ever saw one episode I think but it remained the holy grail of media from my early life that I could not identify. It's never come again anywhere in the last 25 years of pedantic TV and internet usage. Good work.
@@hauntown1058 I think I'm going to enjoy, not only reliving that clip I saw but just getting into what looks like the epitome of '90s grotesque. It was that doll episode and, frankly, thank goodness it was only a dream!
Oh man! I remember waking up early on Saturday morning to watch the Tales from the Crypt cartoon. The show didn’t last long, but my dad let me watch MonsterVision with him because he saw my interest in horror.
@@AntonioScott-ic4uf Oh, get ready for some cool videos on Goosebumps, my friend! They're coming on, both, the books and the tv series! Can't describe how much I love them!
A fellow passionate Mighty Max fan, eh? Finally, someone of culture and intelligence. Top 5 scariest Mighty Max episodes as a possible future video before Halloween?
Ahahahahahahaha, always a pleasure to meet a fellow Mighty Max enthusiast! I do have a top scariest Mighty Max episodes video down the pipeline, though it will come later than Halloween, I'm afraid! But stay tuned! I may be cooking up something about the videogame as well :D
@@hauntown1058 Likewise, sir. Some of those episodes and moments still stick with me to this day; the Loki Sorceror's sacrifice in revenge against Skull Master, the Cyclops' Eye, the brain controlling parasites, the brain-drinking knockoff Xenomorph aliens, the one with Norman's backstory. I legitimately am glad to hear and see someone else actually appreciate the show's qualities that were and are often still overlooked. It's not the greatest show of all time, but it's a cut above a lot of animated kids shows. Never once comes across as if the show is talking down to its audience of kids, just being tactful with what it portrays and how. I don't have any of the sets anymore, sadly, but I made sure to keep one minifigure each of Max, Virgil, Norman, and of course, Skull Master. (Come on, he was played by TIM CURRY.) I really do hold out hope that someday, we might get a live-action Mighty Max movie. I look forward to your future content, subscription button has been smashed. :)
I never considered Mighty Max a horror cartoon. It was more sci-fi/sorcery to me. I guess because it was a cartoon and I grew up watching the best slasher movies of the 70's and 80's, plus I was in middle school.
After months of not being able to sort any play anything partially due to lack of concentration, I’ve sat down and put dozens of hours into Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion these past couple weeks. It really boils down to allowing yourself time to do what you want, but sometimes you have to choose- watching a movie tonight? Catching up on chores? Or playing a game?
Oh my friend, you've opened up a can of worms here! I completely get it, I also struggle with striking a balance between having fun and doing what I know must be done! We are all eternal students in the lesson of self-improvement! Also, Oblivion rules! I can't count the amount of time I've spent on that game (as well as Morrowind and Skyrim)!
