Group B Strep Support (GBSS) is a UK charity, founded in 1996. Our three objectives are to:
1. Offer information and support to families affected by group B Streptococcus;
2. Inform health professionals and individuals how most group B Strep infections in newborn babies can be prevented; and
3. Generate continued support for research into preventing group B Strep infections in newborn babies.
At Group B Strep Support, we believe that every woman should be fully informed about group B Strep and offered the opportunity to have a sensitive (ECM) test to detect GBS carriage late in pregnancy. The results of these tests can then be used to inform as to what further treatment may be needed, if any, to minimise the risk of GBS infection in the newborn baby.
God bless you. My 1st child. My angel Jami Lynn dies at age 8 days old. That was in 1981. I was a 17 year old child myself I almost died myself. Way back then they didn’t know much about it then. I reached out to Dr Carol Baker who was researching it To try and find out more about it. Here in the states they do test pregnant woman but I feel it’s not enough. They test around 36-38 weeks. I can’t remember. But the infection may not be active then. Both of my daughters tested positive with their pregnancies. 1 was given antibiotics. I’m so very sorry. I know you’re heartache. I got to bring my angel home. She showed no signs of being sick. ❤️❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
They call your natural being an infection. Something needing to get rid of. They have no idea what they are doing. These are pipo who want to break barriers. Every being that was created by the ORIGINAL CREATION HAS BARRIERS IN THEIR BODY AS A DEFENSE MECHANISM-a coating. It is not a disease. When they try to break the barriers they create disease and infections. These SPIES.
I had no idea this was a thing during my first pregnancy. Thankfully, my doctor proactively brought it up and Had me tested. I tested positive. The Medical staff was proactive and gave me the antibiotics needed during labor and my kids were born healthy. I'm in the US and it seems proactive testing for this is the norm. Is it not elsewhere?
I don't even know if my family remembers me screaming at the nurses and doctor that I had tested positive for Group B Strep and they refused to treat me. They kept telling me well it's not in your chart. They said well we will just see what happens. Thankfully my son was ok but I know other babies have died. Ladies please please please make sure your entire staff that is around you know.
I lost a nephew at 5 days old to this. He had every symptom in the book for it, of course we didn’t know then. I don’t know how his pediatrician didn’t pick up on anything. I think of him every day. He is my angel.
My daughter passed away yesterday due to group b strep, she was in NICU & everything was fine "they said" but today she's gone & the Dr is saying it's Group B Strep
This is one of the best doctors I have ever met!!! Professional, kind, understanding, and his intelligence exceeds anyones expectation. I have to thank him as he delivered my daughter 18 yesrs ago at the Chelsea Westminster Hospital.
The antibiotics that you give mothers during C-Section & IV during regular pregnancy after giving a false positive PCR test to diagnose GBS in women, IS WHAT CAUSES THE ACTUAL SEPSIS THAT HARMS THE CHILD. You guys are a criminal organization, using propaganda sensational hit pieces to brainwash women into injecting them with antibiotics THAT CAUSE THE BLOOD INFECTIONS, SEPSIS(GBS), MENINGITIS, MRSA that you are trying to “prevent”. Why don’t you share all the complications of antibiotic use in newborns which real scientific studies show, CAUSES COLITIS, ASHTMA, SEPSIS, ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANT BACTERIA, GUT MICROBIOME DYSBIOSIS, DEATH, BLOOD INFECTION, E. COLI, ANAPHYLAXIS, ALLERGIC REACTION, NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS....etc. YOU ARE ALL A BUNCH OF SCUM EGO DRIVEN DOCTORS THAT AMOUNT TO NOTHING MORE THAN THE SHIT I TOOK THIS MORNING 🖕🏼
I had GBS as an infant in 1981. I’m about to turn 40 and I’m just now learning about how serious it could have been for me. My older sister had passed shortly after birth from GBS so the doctors were prepared when I was to be born. Everything was fine until I was 3 months old. From what I was told GBS caused an infection in my hip. I had surgery and was in traction then a body cast for 6 weeks.
I had group b strep my mother had group b strep my sister had it too. So they told me i tested negative at 36 to 37 weeks and i would get 1 to 2 stress test a week. During labor she didnt come out breathing normal and wasnt crying!!! I had a very high fever during labor and everyone told them i was burning up and they check you for dilation so how come they didnt see any pooling down there. They gave us the bad news the following morning when family came to meet our bundle of joy and we had to turn them all away. She had to be transferred to the NICU in va beach almost 1.5hours away from us we loaded up and i demanded to be discharged! So i never got the chance to heal i had to be with my baby they told me it was rare i turned positive during labor but truthfully i think it was hospital negligience it all could of been prevented!!!! She went through hell in the NICU they blew through all her veins! Last procedure had to be a picc line which failed 3x finally the last try was successful it was life or death with that picc line she was able to finish her antibiotics and we stayed in thd nicu for 2 weeks before coming home. To think too 7 long years to get pregnant and we almosy lost her. The unknown killed us. We were always hoping for good news with each morning. Mind you i had a prior pelvic injury so during labor it refractured so took awhile before i could take care of myself physcially but i made sure i cared for my baby no matter what pain i was in. If you like to meet a gbs survivor you can see her on my profile specially for any parents going through this all i can say if caught early your little one stands a better chance. Our was caught a few hours after birth thank the heavens above. All i kept saying no way mom would allow this mom please protect my baby i was speaking to god and my mother as they removed the placenta and sewed me up!!! I kept telling hubby that something bad was going to happen i just felt deep down it was going to go south during labor and i was right something bad did happen. Always listen to your gut instincts
Hey my heart goes out to you. I had it as a baby in 87. And everything turned out normal for me. The only thing I suffer from now as an adult is a short term memory loss and some focus issues which I've read can come from that. I can only imagine what you must still be going through with everything that has happened to you.
. I have son was born in 2018 and I was actually just by luck tested for GBS and was positive. I Had a big sticker on my notes "GBS POSITIVE". When my contractions started I contacted the hospital 7 times and tried to explain that I do not feel well and that I am GBS POSIVE and requre antibiotics. I was told to stay home and wait for strong contractions. Then I decided to go to the hospital without any phone calls as I felt I will never be invited there. On arrival I have explained to my midwife that I had a fever and not well. She started to monitor heartbeat of the baby and it is appeared that it was higher so baby was distressed. She started to laugh and say "It looks like your baby just ran a marathone". I was repeating every 5 min that I need antibiotics. Everyone was ignoring me and was telling me do not tell them how to do their job. The result I had a very quick labour 57 min and my baby boy was born. I had antibiotics only for 1 hour. Placenta did not come out and I was loosing blood rapidly. The doctors had to rush me to the theatre to remove placenta and replace the blood. My baby was born with high temperature 38.4 and was refered to the doctor. But the doctor unstriped him and left under cold air conditioner. His temperature came down to 37.7. So it was taken decision do not give antibiotics. I have never been told abut the fact with the temperature and on my arrival from the theatre I was told that my baby was checked and he is fine. 17 hour later my baby turned blue and stopped to breath. I was shocked and did not understand what has happened. He had menigitis and septecimia. He was transfered to two different hospitals to become stable. He was very strong and survived but was left with brain damage and developed hydrocephalus. He had 4 brain surgeries and 1 general surgery. So he has to live all his life with a tube called shunt inserted in his brain. The mistakes never learned by NHS staff and they constantly killing the babies without even thinking. It is not even about to be tested for GBS. It is about to demand antibiotics regadlesslly if you are GBS positive. Every time my baby goes to the hospital I am checking everything myself and it is constant battle to get everything right for his treatment even now. Every time I had to push so hard for the surgery to be perform on time so he will avoid even further brain damage. It is disgusting health care service and most of people do not realise that.
We’re so sorry to hear that your son was so ill after birth with meningitis and septicaemia, that must have been such a difficult time for you and your family. You might find our page about what you can do after a baby’s group B Strep infection helpful: gbss.org.uk/info-support/group-b-strep-infection/after-gbs-infection/understanding-what-happened/ We also have a page about making a complaint or taking legal action, if you are unhappy about the care you and your son received: gbss.org.uk/info-support/group-b-strep-infection/after-gbs-infection/making-a-complaint-or-taking-legal-action/ If you’d like to speak with someone about this, please do get in touch on 0330 120 0796 or email us at: info@gbss.org.uk.
Carrying group B Strep, when it lives in and on people without causing any problems, is normal. It usually lives in the lower intestines and, in women, in the vagina. GBS can also cause infection, most commonly in young babies, but also more rarely in adults. I'm sorry to hear you are having problems - we have some information on group B Strep infection in adults available at gbss.org.uk/info-support/group-b-strep-infection/gbs-infection-in-adults/. If we can help in any way, do please get in touch with us by email at info@gbss.org.uk and/or by phone (office hours) on 01444 416176

thank you i to was never tested and did not know i was gbs posative our first sighn was my babys hear rate sitting at 190 for 45 min after my water broke the day before at 37.3 weeks .he was bearly moveing compairded to normal ...so out with my 10 year dream of finaly haveing a vbac after 2 c/s and on to my 3rd emergency c/s under a genral.our baby couldnt breath on his own for 20 min and was floppy with an apgar of 1...but fortunatley 2 weeks and 29 doses of antibiocts later he is now home and is only suffering with minor gut issues .
This is almost the duplicate of what happened to my first granddaughter Rosie who was born on Feb 14th 2005 and passed away Feb 18th 2005 note this was 8 years before Lily and we had almost identical happen to us, it beggars belief this is still happening Rosie would have been 11 and half now in her first year at senior school, mile stones she will never have because of the firm The NHS . When will this NHS wake up and stop this keep happening how many more will have to suffer this traumatic experience that is almost completely avoidable with GBS awareness and testing in antenatal care
So brave of Emma & Jason to share their story and memories of baby Thomas. Please join the campaign to ensure that pregnant women are routinely informed about group B Strep and that tests specifically for detecting GBS carriage are made available on the NHS www.change.org/GBS www.gbss.org.uk/why-guess
GBS screening should be included in antenatal care. It is Ten and half years since my first grand child Rosie Birkett died from Group B Strep the heartache although still there is now joined by anger that babies still every year are dying needlessly or being left severely disabled. Approx 700 babies have died since Rosie died and approx 400 have been left severely disabled. It beggars belief that a modern health service such as ours buries it head in the sand and allows this to continue to happen. The cost to the NHS alone for the care required for the disabled children from GBS must out way the cost to include GBS screening into antenatal care. Most first world countries include GBS testing in there antenatal care and have vastly reduced the number of babies affected by GBS. These Countries obviously want these babies to live as they are part of there Countries future which is more than can be said of our Country!!!! As you can see I feel very strongly about this and hope before I die I will see GBS screening routinely available on the NHS so that families wont have to go through the heartache that my family, this family and all other families affected have .
Absolutely agree - pregnant women should be informed about group B Strep and offered a GBS-specific test. It's appalling that this doesn't happen. If you haven't already, please sign & share the new petition at www.change.org/GBS :)
I am so sorry to hear this! ALL pregnant should be offered a GBS test and those who are Positive should be offered Abx treatment. 45 babies/year would be SAVED if universal testing & treatment were standard of care in the UK!
in 2001 I was in labour at home in the morning I didn't feel well I was hot then cold later on that evening midwife took my temperature where it was really high immediately I was rushed to hospital I don't really remember much as I was then sort of out of it but my daughter was born having convolutions they took her away and she was in intensive care she had bacterial meningitis they done the spinal tap she then had a tube that went in through her ankle into a vein that went straight into her heart where they had to pump her with antibiotics she had this over a course of 10 days she was lucky I on other hand had septicaemia blood poisoning so I had the strep and it was not picked up so both of us could have died , then when I was pregnant in 2006 with my son they tested me for it which I did have strep again but this time they treated me when I was 36 weeks pregnant and then I had antibiotics while I was in labour and every thing was fine .
i too had this when i was pregnant undetected until i went into labor and had very high temperature then when i gave birth to my daughter she was having seizure so they took her to icu and she had bacterial meningitis she had tubes all in her she had to have antibiotics through a tube went in her ankle into main artery into her heart and i had septicemia we were both fine then when i had my son i was tested and again i had it so they gave antibiotics when i was pregnant and during labor
Group B Strep International supports the efforts of Professor Philip Steer and Jane Plumb of Group B Strep Support to have universal screening for group B strep implemented in the UK.
This sounds creepy for me. I wonder if further checks were done to see if there was no faul play in the part of the doctors of the nurses. Good wishes for the family!
Your story brought me to tears. My son was born prematurely due to GBS and everything you described fit so perfectly with how I felt. God bless your little man and family.
