Ive always called it a horseshoe finish. You don't see it alot and its hard to do. I was surprised to see Makhachev do it, but he did kinda messed it up by almost falling to his own hip on the swing. If anyone wants tonsee a really good example of this takedown go watch Patrick kennedy's match with Alex Facundo at whose number 1. He hits twice i believe.
I'm not a fighter, so would love if someone who knows more would clarify. A second before the takedown Islam paused. Do you think it was to get the grip better or to bait Dustin into throwing a punch?
I’m also not a fighter but I wrestled in hs and coach now. My guess is yeah he was waiting for Dustin to do something that would put him off balance. In this case it was loading up a punch
Im well aware he didnt create it, and know full well about its usage in Sanda, its new from the perspective of being brought onto a larger stage with more eyes in mma
Islam Makhachev know Dustin already expect single and double leg take down and Dustin show improvement in this fight. So Islam Makhachev do the ankle pick / golf swing for takedown that lead to submission.
Islam's game is more on technique and timing. He likes trips and sweeps. He tripped charles when he tried to knee him and it looked like islam was waiting for it. Charles kneed him and islam went for the trip quick. I don't remember who it was but his opponent was shorter and he was trying to unbalance islam with his leg. Islam just raised his leg so the shorter got tipped over and taken down. It's very nice. It's not the usual takedowns we see from wrestlers. Smart
