Aus History is all about Australian History; history you're familiar with and others you never knew. We'll bring to life the people, places, engineering, crimes. mysteries, and festivities of our nation.
When dealing with historic footage, occasionally, despite our best efforts, we may inadvertently use footage that is not public domain or granted to us. If we have used your images or footage, please get in touch and we'll address it right away.
It could fight but was allocated the job of ground attack because of its low level manoeuvrability and 20mm canon. Fantastic effort to be produced over a few months and an agile little beast.
I've not heard about this attack before, but that's not surprising as we don't get anything but domestic history taught in school. Very interesting video I will have to look into some more. Thanks much. Cheers frm Hamilton, Ont.
My ex Catherine's mum was the ceo of State superannuation we got free tickets & could go Anytime we wanted !! Lol wouldn't it be wonderful if the world was wonderland??? Lol theme song !!
I remember going there for the last time before it closed and riding the dodgems over and over! The Pirate Ship is the only ride I've ever gone on that goes upside down 🎢
The XO of USS Chicago, realising the danger to his ship at dock, ordered the ship to cast off rather than be a sitting duck. The captain returned from a dinner party held at the British admiral in charge of security of Sydney Harbour (how times have changed). Rear Admiral Muirhead-Gould was under the influence and made disparaging remarks about the Australians who had set off the alarm and fired on the subs, suggesting they were seeing pirates. Captain Howard Bode of the Chicago was also pissed and countermanded the order to set sail. Hence the sub fired on Chicago and the tragedy of the Kuttabul occurred. It was Muirhead-Gould who, being a colonel blimp type, wanted to show Imperial Japan the courtesy of a military funeral for their sailors in the hope of affording better treatment of POWs. Of course, it had zero effect. At the time, he was severely criticised in Australia. Later, at the Battle of Savo Island in the Solomon Islands, Bode displayed extreme incompetence (perhaps even cowardice) in a night battle that resulted in the loss of HMAS Canberra as well as many US ships. He avoided the findings of an inquiry into his actions by swallowing a bullet in Panama City where he had been sent on gardening leave. The US followed up by naming one of their ships the USS Canberra. And, thus, in the early years of WW2, there were utter dead wood floating around in command.
My wife has a small piece (section of pipe work) of one of these submarines with a tag attached, distributed by the government as souvenirs to raise funds for the war effort. She's planning to donate it to the Aust War Memorial.
You keep saying "the biggest in the southern hemisphere", but there's literally nothing in the southern hemisphere to compete with it. It's not hard to be biggest of anything
Now with Western Sydney Airport due to open December 2026 , It may be feasible for a new Australia Wonderland ,Elcablo blanco and Lion safari park. Just a thought. These were 3 well intended places built long before sustainable . Thus the influx of expected growth makes the thoughts viable.
I loved wonderland, I went there as often as my parents could afford lol. If I were rich I'd gladly rebuild and reopen it if I could. On another note, i also remember magic kingdom from back in the day that was mentioned here.
Wonderland hosted a few massive raves back in 2000 called Utopia. Such a fun night. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-K79ITWaeqjc.htmlsi=nj6MYGUpCMxsaHgh ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AAj7znDvylw.htmlsi=CxG3gxulV4deKSPp
I visited Wonderland alot, I don’t agree with it closibg at it’s peak of interest. It had been there for nearly 20 years, at the time it was bush, but as Sydney grew so to did the price of land. I think the big issue was rising insurance costs. In the benginning 80’s it would have been very low to cover the cost, but as time went on things were changing, to the point of struggling to turn a profit. There were many great things it bought to Western Sydney saddly, as we are seeing now with Wet n’ Wild if there isn’t enough change within a theme park, it can quickly become stale.
been there twice as a kid and once at 18 the pirate ship was much better than luna park's one australia's wonderland should never have been sold it should have stayed in australians hand and not sold to aisa
Visited many times as a kid and then with my own kids and went one last time 6 months before it closed. I was told at the time the park was closing because it couldn't afford the new insurance tax recently added. It wasn't the only business or homeowner that was affected by the tax increase so it was very believable that that was the reason why it closed.
Went there with school in 1997 and 1998. Theoretically we were supposed to fill out schoolwork whilst we were there, but most of us did it on the bus on the way home, lol. It was a good time a a 13 year old kid. Kinda obvious though the Malaysians just planned to sell it as soon as they could.
That Demon roller-coaster is still one of the scariest rides I have been on. Something about having your feet dangling and being swung backwards not seeing where you're going was freaky.
Went there as a kid in the late 80's, was too scared to go on the bush beast. Went back in the early 2000's, the place was eerily quiet, my girlfriend (now wife) and I almost had the place to ourselves. Got on the front seat of the bush beast, all by myself, and the ride operator sent me around about 30 times in a row. Sad to see it go, the theme parks on the Gold Coast are too busy and expensive.
Beautiful very beautiful you made things wonderful good useful make human life happy you science education original God bless you and protect you from strangers savagery ,,,,,❤❤❤❤there's different between trains us Europe Australia, designed , horn , quality all it good wonderful everyone have special shape but I think us Australia English better little
I live in Nashville, TN and we had a theme park called Opryland that was closed in th elate 90s out of greed. They decided to tear it down and build a "mega-shopping mall". We already had too many malls in the city. Karma got them to some extend as the park was closed in 1997 and by the time the mall was opened the internet and online shopping had already began drving the local malls out of business. Opry Mills, the mall they built, is still there but isn't what they had planned for. A lot of crime there and shootings and filled with lots of non-shoppers walking around and causing trouble. Most long time locals in Nashville will still grumble when Opryland is mentioned. It was filled with a lot of memories for a lot of people
It's shocking that the animals were left to perish that way. I'd hope that wouldn't ever happen now. I never wanted to go there despite growing up in Sydney. It was just too far out and like a lot of fun parks, an expensive day of waiting in line.
I did many times in fact my Year 10 or 11 reward picnic day was celebrated here 1998 or 99. We took 3-4 coaches buses from Albion park there was always a shit clunker bus in the mix😂 avoided getting on the bus. I remember we had open access to the less busy whole park on a weekday including the water slides if we remembered to bring a change of clothes, i got sick eating a hamburger from near the the Bush beast cause what went in came out after the ride😅😅. But yeah great times we had, the was a rumour why it closed cause Rooty hill Rsl submitted Noise complaints when Sydney wonderland remained open during the evening and the Sydney residential boom move to populate western Sydney made no sense as this place became industrial and LG based their warehouse here. The ironic thing about that plot of land Sydney wonderland sat, and eastern creek raceway and the wildlife park ironically Wet n wild sydney would build not far up the road near Blacktown prospect reservoir and not soon after western sydney zoo. Another excuse was Gold coast theme parks were eating into Sydneys which doesn’t make sense as thery already open in the 1980s . I just say the Malaysian owners were not your usual investors more like an administrator by bean counters they didnt want spend and land was worth selling. Cheers for the memories.
Wonderland was exactly that as a kid so much fun to have in a day. Wonderpass and $5 after 5pm was also awesome. I won’t say how I acquired them but I have the wonderland flag and the full Yogi Bear character suit as souvenirs from there. Have told my son I’m gunna to wear it to pick him up from school one day it will be so funny.
Doesn't this bring back the memories? I was lucky enough to save so hard & took my son there when he was about five or six. He had the best time. It was THE place to go. Now it's a piece of trash. Nothing fun for the kids to do anymore, such a shame. Sydney is nothing like it now.
A wide track undercarriage, a tough airframe, a simple reliable engine and basic systems are what keeps a plane flying from rutted airstrips among the kunai grass. This was a tough tight little design that was ideal for the theatre it fought in.
