It was a pity he was so arrogant about Funakoshi's funeral and boycotted that - losing his access to the Funakoshi family, his senior instructors and the SHOTOKAN after 1957... his "junior" style never progressed much after that... NHKK/JKA will always be a poorer copy of his senior's technique...

What Bo Staff opponent is not going to recover after he strikes? Sure, if he thrusts and does nothing else, he just waits to get hit. This isn't realistic. Staff gives you distance and allows you to sweep leg and keep opponent off balance while you set up next strike, block or recover.
I’m def late to this but can confirm. At the beginning, beflre he strikes the voice (that speaks french, which is my native language) tells what he’ll do, "attack to the knee", etc. This is all done with demonstrating and learning in mind on the tonfa’s side.
You can easily defeat a Bo with the Tonfa using these methods correctly.. he's demonstrating a few striking techniques that coincide with the kata. Each master interprets the techniques slightly different, these are derived from Matayoshi style Kobudo and its offshoots. These are just basic blocking and counter striking methods..You can obviously do more too but these are crucial to know against the Bo..
