Malay language is once restricted on the straits of Melaka, the Riau Islands and the Sunda Straits as a trade language. The Dutch is responsible for the spread of the Malay language throughout the East Indies which later become Indonesia. They adopt it as a language of administration as well as a common language for communication with the various ethnic group of the East Indies. Dutch civil servants are required to learn the Malay language prior to being posted to the East Indies. Many Dutch people are born and grew up in the East Indies and are fluent in Malay language. By the 20th Century CE, Malay language had become the common language of the Dutch East Indies that it became the obvious choice to become national language of an independent East Indies that became Indonesia.

(The Standard Malay Languages of .....,. ;..., ...; These National languages are very similar to each other, and are used for formal communication. They have a slightly different intonation compared to BMbIndonesia. A common spelling system (ABC) was agreed since 1972. The dialect of Malays in South Thailand is the same as Kelantan, its neighbour. The Johor Riau dialect is quite popular, even in Selangor and Melaka.,...it is very similar to the Bahasa Melayu (baku) Malaysia.
