This channel is my way of sharing how I go about creating a solo RPG adventure. I am a hobbyist and will be sharing other interest along the way. My goal is to make videos that views finding informative and entertaining.
Really sorry this series didn't attract views and was consequently discontinued , as I found it extremely helpful. When new to the hobby, I bought the Solo GM Guide and Scarlet Heroes, niavely thinking that they would, between them, "instruct" me what to do to solo roleplay ( like a detailed rulebook, I suppose) and then floundered for months, not understanding the process. I only, eventually, got going with Mork Borg and Solitary Defilement/Depths and only after watching a number of Chaocolypse's actual play videos, which explained the process to me in a clear way. Anyway, I just wanted to say I found these 2 videos very helpful and I'm sure they would have assisted in getting me launched into playing, if I had seen them when I was struggling to get my head round it all. Greetings from England.
Thank You for the kind words. I was designing that series to teach people others how to play solo in a different way, by playing. It was hard on me because I know how much work I put into the concept and what I was creating. To see how bad the videos were doing just crushed me. I have gotten over it and I might bring the series back in the future but will need to change the format. Just go over concepts and not actual play sessions. I don't know. It is always good to hear from someone from England. Have a great day. Mike
Journal junkies and solo RPGs work good together. There are actually solo journaling games all about writing. Look for a game call Thousand Year Old Vampire. The book is amazing and looks like a junk journal and the game is fun to play. Not hard and is just about writing in your journal.
Thank you for the pointer, will definitely look into that. Ordered the Knave book and three of the other “Zines” he has listed, just to see if I can figure that out. Appreciate the channel!
Pretty great video! I got interested in traveller style notebooks too recently. Ended up making my own A5 style (and gaining a Basic Leatherwork ability in the process) Has definitely been fun to be able to contain most of my gaming needs in one journal. Wish I wasn't such a cheapskate though because those Lochbys look super nice!
Yeah it was not cheap and I thought hard about a way to make my own but broke down and purchased one. If you want to explore what I was going to do I will share. I was going to use a hard back book cover and reenforce the spine and gutters. Punch in some holes for the elastic bands and done. I still might do some thing like this in the future but give it a try. You could also create some paper pockets on the backs of the covers would not be hard.
I love your videos, Mike. I agree with everything you have to say about the prison that "productivity tools" lock us into. And just the fact that there's now a norm of always being available. Good to hear that you're working on it, and as always a great video. Thanks, man!
Thanks buddy yes I continue to try to free myself from the electronic controls that have been developed. I will say the pocket notebook has been a big improvement in my life.
I do carry one and have done for quite some time, however, I find it to be difficult to remember to write my ideas down when I have them. Would you be willing to share some insight into how you've made it a routine?
@@reelneim I track my daily habits like when I wake up and take my medication and eat. That keeps me using it during the day and has helped me make it part of my habits. I also just start writing in it when I catch myself grabbing g my phone. I will just write about what I am doing or have done. I guess that is my insight, just write in it on a regular basis during the day.
Oh heck yeah I just been setting up a more portable setup for these. One thing is I lucked out and thrifted a brown makeup bag that is perfect for solo TTRPG. It's big enough to lay some tiny notebooks in, deck of cards, some folded up printouts, and it already has sections to divvy out dice/coins and pen holders that were probably meant for eyeliners.
As someone looking to get into Mothership, Being a Warden, and being a GM for the first time, this has been amazingly useful, thank you for taking the time and providing great advice
It really depends on what you are trying to accomplish. I am more interested in learning how books are made and doing it myself. So most of my investment is in the tools to bind the books. I started with cheap copy paper and just black and white copies of scans downloaded from the internet. It is a fun hobby but takes a lot of time. I have not made a book in awhile and bind more zines today.
Excellent and helpful video. Makes me consider printing my own pdfs. If I may, what printer do you use to get such high quality looking print? I may have to upgrade my printer.
I really have a cheap epson eco tank that can't print double sided. So I have to print one side than the second side. The quality comes from my setting. I print photo quality on mat paper, it is one of my setting options. It takes much longer to print but a better result. Check your printer first and see if this helps. Might save you some money.
@@jonio38 If you play the game following the rules I agree it is rather flat. I just added more RPG elements to the game describing the rooms and encounters. For a travel game I don’t want it to be too detailed. Just something fun to play while traveling. I feel the easiest why to add complexity would be to mix up the rooms and create tables for the encounters. This would add more of a random element and make it unknown what you will encounter.
@@tonyurquides1646 The best time to further your understanding of stoicism is now because we don’t know what tomorrow holds for us. I limit my reading to just a few authors and stay away from reading too many books. I like to read the same books multiple times so I can really get a good understanding of what the authors are writing. I find Ryan Holidays books work best for me because they focus on different parts of the philosophy so I can really dive into the subject.
as "gimmicky" as these dice are, it's a little hard to argue on there uniqeness to them. yes a little spendy on what we gotten for them and how little these maybe used. but maybe be apprishiated for any dice goblin collector out there to have a set that many may may never get a chance at. i do hope this company may make improvments on the design and learn on it. rather i back these people again or not is up for debate. but i'm satified on how someone had a dream of a perfectly round ball and made it to a die.
@@samsinger5135 I agree to live out a dream and create something that does not exist in the market is a great thing. I am happy to have them in my collection.
I took it to be short for Stalingrad because you want to hang up you Kalshniko which is a rifle used by the Russian army. You could be right it could just be short for Stalker and I am overthinking it lol.
@@astrallass4634 It is something that gives your character more of a reason to risk their lives to go into a dangerous situation. It might be something I put more thought behind and maybe I will create a video on it. Have a great day
I understand the cost for making them and the dice tray but yeah not the best dice. I had many results that needed to be rerolled and that is not good. All dice have a home with me and I will make sure they get rolled now and again lol.
I picked this up as well. I was able to test it out the same day at GenCon, finding a side hallway to play on my own. Good little game, this. Highly recommended by this solo-player! edit: 17:13 - A little rules clarification: You keep the action cube on the last action you do, so you are unable to do them twice in-a-row.
I forgot about that while recording. Even in these small little games I make mistakes. It is a great little game for the price and something to take on the road or just relax and enjoy.
I have seen that game but never played it. With all the games on the market sometimes we are not really creating anything new just recycling rules from other games. I am really happy to read your comments and that you are enjoying the videos I did for Dragonbane.
9:23 A nice surprise, getting players out of their comfort zone, with instances of roll-high processes amongst predominantly roll-low ones. You seem to fancy orthogonality I haven't seen in your playthru to date :)
I talk a lot about being outside our comfort zone in life and gaming. I feel one of the reasons people struggle to play solo is it make us a bit uncomfortable. So by accepting up front and understanding that will free to you explore and try new things. I am always trying new ways to play and enjoy the hobby and breaking free of the rules as written or this is how it is done concepts.
@@solitaryrpg DUN stands for 'Dungeon Universalis' - a campaign based adventure board game designed by Spanish fantasy novelist, with some quite well conceived ambitions of a game system. Your door process is very similar to one described there and I find that game tiles as well as subset of so called 'dark player' cards that are relevant to door/trap process would do nicely with Dragonbane as well as Forbidden Lands.
@@lordkelvin441 Now I get it, I am familiar with Dungeon Universalis. I might have lifted my process from that game unknowingly. I watched a lot of actually plays of the game and was considering purchasing it. I went with League of Dungeoneers instead. Thank you for the clarification I just wanted to make sure I understood the comment. t is hard to keep up with all the game jargon lol.
@@solitaryrpg Also, the process is basically meant to be 'lifted' as per DUN's 'game system' aspirations. No harm done, Mr. Bribian is probably quite pleased his ideas being so popular.
I feel I found some real gems this year at GenCon. I can't wait to dive into them and share more about these games. I need to get caught up on some other projects over the next few weeks first.
Sorry you picked up one unwanted item...the con crude...hope you are over it soon, buddy...looing forward to seeing what you think about some of those games and hope you will show how the dice tray of the artwork comes out...Jim
@@Jedijim252 thanks Jim con crud is the worst. I will get reviews done on some of the games over time. Dark Tomb will be next week for sure since I played it while on my trip. I am excited about the dice trays also and will share them in one of my monthly update videos. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Mike
If ya love the system (also a Yank having little exposure to these)….and may enjoy that same system for a full rpg (as opposed to the original and/or modern Advanced Fighting Fantasy), you may thoroughly enjoy the clone Spellzard! (On DriveThruRPG). Very easy, expanded and tiny and super easy way. Short page count, but very strong and flavorful. I highly recommend it! Cheers, brother!
Nice to see the tiles on card properly, I'm the graphic designer behind the jungle tiles, the little pebble throne room and the nurgle / skaven tile around 12mins which I did for LM :)
If ya really dig this wonderful and simple system and would enjoy it as as a full rpg system , FF tried it but made it beyond with Advanced Fighting Fantasy (which has been wonderfully updated)….. But to keep it super lite and easy and as it was…… Spellzard! is an outstanding clone of it! Spellzard! does it, wonderfully! Enjoy, everyone! 🙂
This video and the first part-er, were great ideas for solo'ing this gem. Subscribed, bro. Just started toying around with it tonight. Really liking the stories you can make with all the random tables. I'm in the same boat in you, I desperately need more random western tables. The only other western themed game I own is dead lands from Swade. Might dig through there and see what gems I can dig up. Also, I feel you on the writing, especially with this setting. Showed the girlfriend my soloing day to day notes from this game and she said it reads like a blood meridian book, man vs nature, bleak. lol I'm sad because my PC only has 6 hp, don't know how far his odyssey will last.
Thanks for the sub and your thoughts. I still have not found a lot of old west tables and games. They are out there just not treated the same as fantasy or sci fi. Your girlfriend nailed the setting, it is man vs nature and should be bleak. It is the frontier and so unknown. These Morg Borg style games are not meant to last long and it is better just to enjoy the character while you have them. Have a great day.
Glad you mentioned the error with the cards. I also had an order that input in and all my tuck box cards were doubled up. Might be a glitch in their system.
i have a question to anyone that can answer pls, i have the Strider mode solo rules for the One ring printed, but i'm questioning if this solo rules on the Moria expansion are the same as strider mode, complement, or a new solo mode, and if they are different , what should we use? thank you.
Here is what is written in the book. Solo play within Moria is complementary to Strider Mode, a supplement for The One Ring that offers rules and tools for solo play, including expanded events for overland travel. You can utilise Strider Modes in addition to these guidelines if your adventures take you beyond the confines of Moria. However, Strider Mode is not required to play a solo campaign in Moria. If you prefer to explore Moria as a lone hero without the aid of a Band of Allies, you can use Strider Mode along side some of the resources herein to help depict your lone exploration of these ancient halls. So the solo rules are something that can be used with Strider Mode or stand alone. I was hoping that we would see Strider Mode printed in a book at some point. With these new solo rules you are running with allies. It also has some great tables for creating your adventure. I have not read through all the rules yet but I like what I see.
@@Daemonarch10 happy to help. One day they might print them in one of their releases. They have some other releases they didn’t print so maybe they have a plan for it all.
