Derek Gripper is a classical guitarist who has taken a unique path. As a South African classical musician he found limited by the music of the traditional classical guitar and so went on a journey through different musical styles, returning always to the guitar to find ways of bringing what he learned onto the instrument.
It took Derek Gripper untold hours of painstaking work to transcribe note-for-note the complex compositions of Malian kora player Toumani Diabaté and find a way of playing them on six-string guitar. The results appeared on his ninth album, One Night on Earth, recorded with an orchestra of crickets (who he didn’t invite). The album created an unprecedented meeting point between the written tradition of Western classical music and the oral tradition of the West African griots.
Absolutely brilliant, Derek. Thanks for the videos. I must come see you play live soon again. It’s been years since catching you at “Straight No Chaser” in Cape Town. I so miss that wonderful space. Missed you at the Kennedy Center.
Brilliant combination,,,and Guy the restraints to keep the background so pure on the Ebow …just an incredible duo …a deep heartfelt thanx for this video …
I think the confusion often comes with African music that we remember what was done to American blues in rock music, where it was created anew and profited from without acknowledgement of sources, and we forget that to play a composition by Salif and acknowledge him means that he profits as the composer. It is the musical financial system we have at present. Composers get royalties when musicians play their music. Africans can and are a part of this system. Salif is. His music is all protected and reimbursed by copyright. I hope that by playing his music his name goes to new places alongside his music.
why cant he honor great music? When I was in Mali in 2000, Toumani Diabate was financially supporting a hip ho band. I dont like hip hop, but did I say anything? no. What about all the people all around the world playing Afro beat, and Amapiano, those are not African, theyre based off of hip hop and techno, will you go after them as well. Oh wait I forgot, we Americans invented the airplane, electricity, and the internet, what gives you the right to use any of those?
I really love your transcriptions particularly the hand written ones. Would you consider publishing a collection of your transcriptions in a book perhaps one day?
After having witnessed you two perform this afternoon, it's amazing to listen back on an earlier recording, knowing how much deeper the improvisational bond has grown, and will continue to. Looking forward to the album release!
Hi Derek, we would like to hear you play, but we have a commitment on March 23. Could you post some other dates you’re performing about the Bristol area? Thx
@@NordElectric-fi6sg there is an album on Spotify etc Bach sonata and partita 1: 2017 session" I am also slowly releasing the cello suites there is a first draft out at the moment called LOST TIME and a new one coming out in a few weeks. You can also find all my recordings on www.derekgripper.com
1:50 start of main theme. All is calm. Cut to water trickle. Music quickens. 2:22 pan to the artist and we see the wind's response is to make the entire forest dance.
When listening to the audio only of this piece the ending is brutal. I look up from time to time toward tat end. Seeing the camera pan up as if to say "Yeah. Hear that trees?! You better keep performing CO2 exchange, throwing shade and being the incredibly beautiful specimens you are or else it'll next be you being turn into a captivatingly haunting piece of art". Then I read that this recording took place in the ruins of a logger's cabin (woodcutter's cottage). How apt.
Just saw your concert last night, absolutely stunning. At first I thought it was just going to be boring, but after the first few song , i completely lost time and before I knew it was over.
We had a privilege to listen your play which was like forest bathing, relaxing, mind opening, slow down and connect. Thank you, while your music is exceptional at Marrickville Sydney the acoustic and the lighting was substandard, you and we should be treated better.
