Founded in 1879, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra (Chinese: 上海交响乐团) is China's oldest symphony orchestra.
The SSO has built bridges in recent years between East and West, not least through international touring and its Shanghai Orchestra Academy, a joint initiative between the orchestra, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Maestro Long Yu became Music Director of the SSO in 2009.
SSO has become increasingly influential both at home and abroad, after most recently completing the audio and video recordings of such excellent music as: Zhu Jian’er’s Symphonies, Tan Dun’s multimedia concerto The Map, and music for the prize-winning film (Oscar and Grammy Awards) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The SSO signed to Deutsche Grammophon in 2018 and have since released two studio recordings featuring Maxim Vengerov, Michelle DeYoung, Brian Jagde, Zhang Liping and Shenyang.
What must a Chinese audience think of a Chinese conductor and a Chinese orchestra interpreting a Western composition that uses interpretations of Chinese sounds representing Chinese poems? Most noteworthy is the rhythmically and musically spirited rendition of this composition. The tenor is one of the few singing this part who - probably with the help of sound mixing - can be heard apart from the orchestra. The mezzo-soprana is wonderful too.
Bravo! Excellent! Amazing! Thank you all, especially percussion and brass section! I love this music long time. But this is the first time I cried while listening. The depth of emotion in the performance may be unique to SSO has played countless the Butterfly lovers violin concerto which express similar tragic love stories. How beautiful from 20:05 ! And as a fellow East Asian, I want all Americans to listen to this performance and know that Chinese orchestra can deeply understand to play their music. Just as listening to Ozawa's performance half a century ago helped American people understand Japan and the Japanese people.
I really wish that I could get one of those Buffet Crampon Mopane clarinets. Maybe not the Tosca like Dai Le has. Such a beautiful instrument. I'm very glad to be able to hear Dai Le play it. I wish that I could hear more of her. Does she have her own channel?

Elgar gave the unusual nickname “Nimrod” to his friend August Jaeger whose noble character is portrayed in Variation IX. That odd title is a sublime example of Elgar’s exquisite sense of wordplay because its various connotations may be combined to produce “A Mighty Fortress,” the title of the covert Theme. Check out the following essay to learn more about this wordplay cipher: enigmathemeunmasked.blogspot.com/2011/01/nimrod-elgar-and-wordplay.html
Edward Elgar advised that the famous secret melody to his Enigma Variations must play "through and over" each movement as a counterpoint. Felix Mendelssohn's version of "Ein feste Burg" (A Mighty Fortress) forms a credible counterpoint with Variation IX (Nimrod): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-myjjfkJ27cw.html This contrapuntal mapping generates 174 note conjunctions between "Ein feste Burg" and Nimrod's short score dispersed over 39 out of 43 measures. the brass section is really frustrating especiall the horns. If this is the best orchestra in China or even in the whole Asia then it's really embarrassing
🎹 If you like the post romantic music of Wagner, Mahler, Richard Strauss with a touch of Alban Berg... you have to love this gorgeous, sprawling masterpiece by Schoenberg. 💖
A great orchestra. An outstanding performance at the forbidden city for the DG anniversary concert. Especially the jasmine flower composition . Danke. 谢谢.
