late to the video but unless i missed something then Joseph did not present a win with what he had on board. It looks like the only way he has to untap the welder on board/ in graveyard is through the tempting apple's ETB ability, but if he is going between the apple and sculpting steel to untap the welder then he has no window to get the twinshot out. This is because as soon as he gets the twinshot out then the welder will not have a way to become untapped... I do see the decklist runs "liquidmetal torque" and if he used magda to tutor the torque then he could turn the welder into an artifact and use the clock of omens and treasures to untap the welder then the twinshot and any artifact to achieve the win. but he never stated he was doing this so technically i would say this is a missplay. Again unless I missed something in the video.
I love that you guys have the turns bookmarked. Often times with games where edits are made to shorten the video it can be hard to keep track of turns. Also love the in person games. I feel like the chemistry/vibes are better when everyone is in the same room.
Thanks for watching! We like keeping track of turns internally just to average out how long on averages games will last. I think table banter is easier IRL, and people can be more in the moment, but there are def pros and cons for IRL vs spell table.
So I double checked this interaction 15:45 after the game and it turns out I did this wrong. The short version is that I attempted sacrifice both KCI and Esoteric Duplicator to KCI while paying costs for the Esoteric Duplicator trigger from sacrificing my Corridor Monitor token and I can't do this in a way that give me KCI mana for both KCI and Esoteric Duplicator and have triggers for Esoteric Duplicator for both artifacts. During the game, we discussed this interaction a bit and we believed it was fine because I was doing it during paying costs and thus, we believed, Esoteric Duplicator would see both artifacts be sacrificed due to things going on the stack after paying costs and then I could pay for the triggers. I could've sacrificed two of my other artifacts before sacrificing KCI and then used Esoteric Duplicator's activated ability to achieve a similar result but I still messed it up in the game and wanted to point it out in case anyone else tried to do this as well. I discussed my mistake with the other players once I found out and we didn't think it would've changed the outcome if I had done it correctly but if I had misplayed in a tournament, I may have lost the game due to not knowing how this should work and I believe the judge could've ruled that I couldn't undo sacrificing my artifacts and that would've lead to me not having a KCI on my next turn.
I can't get both KCI mana and Esoteric Duplicator triggers, even while attempting to do this while paying costs, because Esoteric Duplicator has a triggered ability that only triggers if it is on the battlefield and if I sacrifice it to KCI, Esoteric Duplicator will have already left the battlefield by the time I can sacrifice KCI to itself and I wouldn't get a trigger. A similar thing happens in the reverse case for when I sacrifice KCI first as KCI will already be in the graveyard when I want to sacrifice Esoteric Duplicator to it and thus I can't. This is similar to the KCI + Scrap Trawler + Myr Retriever combo as you need to sacrifice Myr Retriever, a 1 or less CMC artifact and Scrap Trawler while paying costs but l didn't realize that you have to sacrifice Myr Retriever first so that Scrap Trawler will have see it die and then setup a triggered ability that goes on the stack after costs have been payed. This is what I get for not playing Modern when that combo was popular 😅
Thanks Tyler for providing the clarifications and correction! Appreciate you walking through the lines. You’re right that we spent sometime talking about the interactions and there were definitely a lot of lines you could had taken, so the game was already decided at that point, just wanted to show case a cool way to get there! Thanks for the games!! (Still killing Arcum onsite, now there’s video proof)
Regarding the Raffine deck. I was looking at the list and I saw Persist in there. Wouldn’t Dance of the Dead be better due to the amount of legendary creatures and another combo piece with Abdel?
Talked to Jordan about it, and it seems like it just a personal preference, I think you make a good point with dance of the dead, just locally there is a heavy dockside meta, and that can feed dockside when persist doesn't, just a personal preference / playstyle of a player!
I’d like to add too, my style of raffine is supposed to be able to grind and hang out in the midrange. In my opinion, the downside of dance of the dead is much worse than the downside for persist if you want to keep a con sphinx or something similar around for several turns.
Yeah! I’ve been wanting to try the list so I’ve been shopping around and never saw that card. I’ll look through change logs and see what the community has decided. Thanks!
I’ve been putting my talk on one every game for the past few weeks and been very pleased with it. That said, my perspective is very skewed that of the 15-20 people in my meta 3 of them play Stella as their primary deck.
RogSi… brother. I know it’s scary to go to three. But we gotta ship that one back. Ripping the land was an insanely lucky especially if you’re on 24 lands. Would make for a great RU-vid short clowning the keep cuz that luck is insane 💀 GG
