We are using looking at this through the works of Mertens (2024) book: Research and Evaluation in Education and Psychology. Firstly, thank you for the examples that you provided. It helped me understand the two a little bit more. I'm a visual learner, so I appreciated how you had both the research and evaluation key information listed side by side so one could compare/contrast. I am currently a graduate student at Arizona State University and we are beginning to learn about research vs. evaluation in our introductory research course. Within our text, there were many examples but it helped to see a clear purpose of research and evaluation. We were tasked at looking at how the two terms relate and how they differ. One of the things that I noticed to differ between the two was that evaluation has stakeholders and research is specific to the people in a particular field. Would you say that research has stakeholders as well? Those who conduct the research are invested in the results and final outcome as well and seem like they could be identified as stakeholders. I am a graduate student in the Learning Design and Technologies program at Arizona State University. I appreciate your video on the differences between research and evaluation. From what I have learned to date, an example of an evaluation would be when an organization wants data to judge how well their educational program teaches the material in a way which enables learners to utilize the necessary skills or knowledge. An example of research would be when a researcher wants to study existing instructional methods for online learning environments without judging how well each method performs. Both evaluations and research could use data from archival, quantitative, and qualitative sources to make their conclusions. However, research would also focus on pre-existing literature and be published for more general uses while evaluation does not usually rely on published resources and is oriented toward stakeholders for the specific project only. Based on your experience and expertise in this field, do you believe my attempt to define evaluation and research in an education setting is on the right track?
