The process of court is different from the process of our human feelings and emotions and, if you understand a little bit of the law, all suspects are considered INNOCENT until PROVEN GUILTY, not by observers but by COURT! All these are suspects and not guilty hence the court process! Second, defense doesn't exist just to prove someone innocent but to also present a case on the final ruling or verdict over their client which could go very many ways! In this particular case, the defense is not even discounting the facts of the murder but is challenging the process and procedures of the investigation which, so far, punches holes in their canvas and exposes them as not credible or the evidence presented not one that can be used to make sound judgement on the matter. This is what I pick as a civilan listening to these proceedings!
