All men, eventually, take-on traits of their environment. The more time you spend in it, the more it becomes you. Most cops start-off as idealistic versions of themselves, "I want to do good, help people, protect people." Then, within just a few short years, being in an environment of criminals, con-men, and law-breakers, they (very often) become MONSTROUS individuals. This is one of the many reasons why our society is DOOMED to fail: most jobs are quickly become corporate, and the corporate environment is disgusting, acidic, and exceedingly toxic. The good news is, you can PURGE this venom from your soul. It just takes time.

Great comments about Hostiles (2017). As a Brazilian living in a country with similar tragedies related to its own natives, I could not agree more with your analysis of this remarkable film. Thank you so much for sharing why you love this masterpiece so much, which in my opinion is absolutely underrated!! Your love for this film helps us to confirm the understanding of this incredible film, the great acting of all the actors - Bale, Pike, Studi, Cochrane, Majors and Foster are magnificent -, the beauty of the soundtrack, cinematography, as well as the exceptional script and direction by Scott Cooper. Greetings from Brazil!

The unparalleled level of research and time you have devoted to the brutal and to often overlooked and forgotten truth that is each day being wiped from the history books and the hands of our forefathers like the blood from Cesar's hands is a more valuable then you know. This movie review makes Gene and Roger's movie reviews look like they were given by second rate trolls who were to busy fondling their movie dates to give anything close to a proper description of the film. They do exist. They are, in my experience, the majority of men. They are so good at calmly and consistently doing their duty that hardly anyone notices them. Even their kids and wife and friends may, at times, brush them aside or overlook them. But they are so firmly MEN that they don’t complain or get defensive. They simply keep doing their dirty. They soldier on. What the movies topically get wrong is that these men aren’t usually in positions of power or influence. They’re usually not heroes. They’re simple workers, fathers, lovers, neighbors. Look around you. If you think hard enough I bet you could personally know ten men like this, you’ve just never noticed.

The fact that movies like this are no longer valued as they used to be, speaks to what we also have lost, forgetting in some way the steps along the journey to how America gained it's current consciousness. Terrence McKenna said that if the brain is the hardware, then culture is the operating system software of humanity. And just like you can run anything from Apple or Windows to absolutely stripped down operating systems that only are built/written to streamlined to do one thing all on the exact same hardware, cpu, etc. The gamit of culture is as impossible vast as the universe is, and perhaps even greater, and not only does this tale speak to how America gained it's soul/culture, but how it lost it's original one in doing so. It's a tragic tale, told like it's a great victory., but like all war, no matter who is the victor, both sides lose. It's sad that humanity has something deep in us that chooses rather to mix cultures, for almost all human history, culture was a winner take all game, and yet like the coloniziation of the American West, there is still a merging happening of those cultures... what is left of the one, and the new one that America has become after not only this conflict, but all her conflicts, and now as war is becoming less genocidal than it had in the past. Culture is mixing more and more, pride in one's ancestory is becoming more in style now, and respected, where before especially at times of deep war, it seems bigotry and racism divided cultures with much more violence, and hate. Even as recently as that last conflicts, and now American's seeing near genocide being commiteted again, regardless if what side you come down, seeing defenseless kids and mothers, and fathers, killed on mass often for nothing more then hate. Shows we are not at all far from the people we were during this time in America. That side of humanity I find sometimes hard to believe comes so easily to some... I can understand those who have lost, but many it seems all it takes is just being able to have power over another culture is enough for them to want to exterminate those families, people. I don't understand that side of humanity. I don't see how we can be on one hand a highly social species that even can love animals as much as another human, and yet there are people for whom hate comes so easily, life taken so carelessly. I don't understand it. I just hope we can end it soon, without losing any more of the cultures we have already lost, and the parts of those cultures that are barely hanging, and those that are at this moment down to only a handful of remaining people. When i look into a whale's eyes, I see an animal that is as magestic as the entire universe, an animal so vast that I can't begin to understand the depths of it's feelings for one another, and the time scale they exist in. And i think about how humanity is in the process of guaranteeing most of those great creatures, creatures like the blue whale that nature took 4 billion years to produce. A time scale so fvast, that we cant' even comprehend it. and yet once say all the creatures of that species are gone, they are gone forever, a treature richer then any gold, any building, any piece of art, to me something so valuiable we can't even comprehend the loss of it's passing. And right now we are are in a mass extinction event caused by our actions that makes all other great extinction events in earths past pale in comparison. Yet we would rather talk about what celebrity is using a vacuum cleaner on her lips, or who is dating who, and movies like this, that have something actual true and real to say, somethign deep enough to last past the next month, which most fads seem to last now. Used to be years what was in 'fashion' lasted, now it's over almost before it started..... and it's all so empty... I attended the VFX preaward screenings for the academy award for best vfx, and there was a red light that the award show organizers had put up, to prevent any single presenting, since they had to get through all the movies screening the best of their effects in one evening, so they tried to use this light to indicate to the director, or vfx sup, whoever was standing up and talking before the reel would roll. And when it came time for James Cameron's Titanic to come up, the first thing he did was turn around, and unscrew that red light bulb, and said... "I learned a long time ago, if you have something important to say, it takes time to say it properly"... I might have not quoted him exactly but that was pretty much exactly the sentiment he meant. I remember that, and I think this movie is the epitome of that idea. When you have something truly deep to say, sometimes it takes the time it takes, and if you try to rush it, or speed it up, or make it 'flashy', you lose the true depth of the sentiment. Movies like this thankfully are still being made because despite them not making huge box office, the people who are capable of making huge blockbusters, many of them still value a film like this. and hopefully that will continue to be enough that these films, even if not laidened with awards, will still be made.... cause if anything we need more of them, rather then less, and we need to stop letting people label a movie as 'boring' because they themselves are too shallow to understand where it's value lies...

John Wayne turned down the role of Will Kane in High Noon saying he "considered it the work of communist traitors". "Desperation, cowardice, asking for help to defeat a common enemy-these themes troubled Wayne as an American. He saw High Noon's exploration of them as evidence of weakness and subversion." He went further to say that it is wholly unAmerican for a man to just walk away after the conflict is resolved and leave the town unprotected from future attack. I bring this up because there was a belief that the whole purpose of the movie was to serve as a metaphor for many of those who were blackballed from working in the motion picture industry by the actions of the Joseph McCarthy crowd during the 'Red Scare' era of the late forties and early fifties. But the fact is a good story, a good allegory exceeds its purpose and this, if it were an allegory, poses hard questions which perhaps go all the way back to the perceived original purpose in the mind of its creator. Carl Foreman, who wrote the screenplay admitted that he had been a member of the Communist Party in the thirties and became disillusioned and quit, like literally tens of thousands of others who were part of the depression era intelligentsia. Appearing before the House UnAmerican Activities Committee he refused to name other members that he had known and for this he was blackballed. Certainly Foreman understood that he was swimming with sharks by refusing to rat out his friends in the face of the Red Scare, believing probably correctly that none of the friends he knew were posers of threat to the US. It seems to me that there was nothing unAmerican about following your own sense of what is right and wrong, nor should a man feel guilty for doing his duty and then quitting the post for which that duty was so demanding that it nearly destroyed his life. To me there is instead an extra layer of courage demonstrated over and above the plotlines of the movie. I believe that John Wayne was wrong in his contentions and to my way of thinking High Noon is perhaps the best example in terms of movies of what real courage is all about and further that Foreman lived up to the meaning of real courage by his efforts with it by standing firm in his resolve that the Red Scare needed to be attacked for its efforts in destroying the lives of people as perhaps one of the first and perhaps the most damaging kind of "cancel culture" in US history. I think in this day and age where there is so much divisiveness in terms of what it means to be right or wrong it is important to revisit the themes of High Noon, all of them, and try to find our way back to the simpler definitions about things like courage and honor and what it means to be an American worthy of the ideals of those who came before us. Thanks for tolerating this meaningless little disquisition.

@@jerrymeadows5059 Huh. I had never heard of any of that historical context. Thank you so much! That's fascinating. I can understand why John Wayne, the face of machismo masculinity, would reject a role about a man humbly doing his job. Besides, Gary Cooper is perfect for the role, so no real loss

@@thepositivepictureshow Another little item of interest about the red scare that you may not have heard about was the blackballing of Ring Lardner, Jr., who was one of the "Hollywood Ten," which kept him from being able to write for Hollywood for almost three decades. He was able to work under a pseudonym for a couple of TV shows and finally allowed to write for the movies when he co-wrote the Cincinnati Kid in 1965. In his acceptance speech for winning the Academy Award for Mash in 1970 he mentioned that he had won an Academy Award for his co-writing of Woman of the Year in 1942 and that he felt this win at long last marked a pattern in his life and so he would see everybody in 1998.

By virtue of the cast alone, I’m very surprised that this film wasn’t better-received and critically acclaimed. It does seem that the superficiality of so many critics has become a kind of virus in itself. Of the three reviews I read, two thought the movie was morose and/or fatally dark. Yours, alone, reckoned with the psychology and brutality of lives clashing together and the confrontations that have been commonplace down through the ages. Very well done!

I know Americans and theirs who felt war. Nobody escapes no one is a hero. This analysis of this movie is striking in that it tells the reality. I had Marines commit suicide.
