Matt, I must say you have given a wonderful and elaborate review on this game. The amount of research that you have done to put this together is amazing. So for that, I thank you very much. I'm new to these 'card-based tactical' games and I'm lucky to have gotten the base game for free over at Epic Games. It took me a while to get the hang of the game and I loved it very much. I've spent about 80+ hours into the game and itching to see if there will be a sequel coming up. That's when I found this video. I totally agree with you that the exploration part of the game is somewhat mesmerizing - the music is haunting and the visuals is breathtaking to the point that sometimes I'm looking forward to quickly finish the fight so that I can get 'lost' in and around the abbey. Ha ha. I'm contemplating on purchasing the Legendary edition as it is now on sale which makes it very enticing to continue the action into the 4 DLCs. Once again, thank you for this well-written video essay! Cheers!
Hekki, six to one, Matt. It was a real pleasure to look at what other people carried forward with them from that game as being the most impactful. When I am recommending 1000xRESIST to others I warn them, they will be frustrated. I say "Not only the character you play has almost a full understanding of the society they live in and you know nothing about, but also they game will make you make choices you don't wanna make and deny the possibility when you really think you could use a right decision just about then and there." But also I appreciate the writing that really rewarded talking to every NPC with it's delivery of key cues in a blink-and-you-miss-it moments. For me the through the game 180'd on me several times, the line that threw me completely off the rails, was one delivered by Mimi the 50 in one of the last chapters, on the deck. Where she spoke about inseminating Iris's clones. And my brain immediately went OH MY GOD, she got killed because she tried that with IRIS HERSELF despite being told NOT TO. And then the ALLMOTHER... and then.... like the whole world collapsed on me in that one line of dialogue that really was not THAT Important from the bigger picture perspective. How I absolutely loved even the metaphor of shortsightedness running in Iris's genes and Healer obsession with creating BETTER, SEEING eyes later. But only when driggered with the need to protect Watcher. I appreciate so many little elements of this game. And I completely disagree with you on the Keepers perspective. ;)
The problem with Remedy is that they produce top-notch games but at the same time they aren't profitable, and the deal only benefits the movie division, and is detrimental to the game publisher.
I’m so happy to see a highly positive video on cassette beasts. It absolutely deserves high praise as a pokemon-like that stands on its own two feet. The creature designs are probably my favorite part!
Ok so either i made wrong assumptions and correlations or something is going over your head. Jiao had "something" on her skirt. Is was not chewing gum. And it was her brother who did it. And she only told Iris. And Iris told everyone
1000xResist through whisky squad woooo. I keep having high hopes that the steam deck and steam os will continue to lead to more interest in Mac ports because hey, there you at least need to branch out from just supporting x86/DX
Spot on reading imo, Matt. Truly devastating to see C-Suite people constantly destroying the businesses they supposedly care about in efforts to maximize profit
I just know that I basically only play indie games and have done so for many years and that Annapurmas catalogue is SO good - my GOTY from last year (Thirsty Suitors), and some of my absolute favorites, like Kentucky Route Zero (TV Edition) and Outer Wilds, were published by them, and a lot more very good games like Journey, Gorogoa, What Remains of Edith Finch, Gone Home, etc, as well. So I just hope that more cool games are coming my way, and that they are doing so from a place of relative harmony.
I suppose my highest hope is that the tastemakers who have raised the profile of the indie scene are able to form their own outfit and carry on as they were. It’s a risky proposition but the idea of there not being another Outer Wilds, or KR0, or this year’s exquisite Lorelei and The Laser Eyes, would really diminish what gaming can accomplish in the face of the ever-metastasising threats of AI and live-service. On a positive note: Matt, I’ve been playing Cassette Beasts based on your recommendation and THANKS I LOVE IT.
It was such a lame story and most of the character were lame too, but the gameplay was so great. So sad that this wasn’t a straight up marvel game based on the 90s
Huge fan of you channel since I've found your video on Citizen Sleeper, saw your posting of this video on 1000XResist and immediately bought it, after finished the game I can only say you did a absolutely amazing job with this video.
I gave no name for the same reason the residents of the nameless Town didn't give any to the Neighbors - it wasn't mine to give. Thanks for this video.
This was a very good video about an amazing game, thank you. I liked the fact you had your own opinion about some characters, that’s what I like to listen to. It also helped me having a better understanding of some parts of the game
One of those games that really tried my patience because I have such a hard time not falling asleep when something isn't moving and flashing, but man was the game worth it. As an aside, Saltsea Chronicles is a game that also explores the ensemble protagonist, and the creator even has talks on RU-vid where she speaks to this being a very anti capitalistic choice. The game has heart, just as Kentucky had, which is important for me, and sometimes when one is too theoretical about one's approach it can come across as not sincere.
Man, that thing you describe in the beginning about not seeing the whole picture is how I feel all the time about many things I wish I understood. Old problem, already present when metal gear solid 1-3 were released. More and more, I just accept this reality, and thus just let memories and understanding fall away from me.
I'm currently watching through this, but I'm glad to see others took as much of an interest in this game as I did. It was slated to be a "soon(TM)" project for me because when I played through it I was deep in the midst of another project that I'd been working on for the past year. Seeing this game get the attention it deserves makes me much happier, and I'll be sharing this video around after watching through it.
Definitely cassette beasts is one of my favorite games it has relationship you can get as example a kiss from kayleigh etc but i prefer that you also fill the others companions hearts to gain full experience there's also a Easter egg if you fully get there relationship to you and then go to a campfire only one tent will be there meaning they started to feel emotion towards you and decided to sleep with you in one tent
So glad I finally had the time to sit down and watch the video. I don't have much to comment, because we've discussed so much of this in depth on discord (this is Lex, for the record), but I really enjoyed the way you approached the video and divided it up. I generally agree with you on Principal - I say "generally" because to me, it isn't really a question of whether or not she can be or deserves to be forgiven*, so much as whether her legacy should be brought forward when trying to build a new world, and the answer was a resounding "no" for me. (I also feel like the 'red' ending is less hopeful than the 'blue' ending, thanks to little touches like Blue's epitaph describing Blue as a terrorist, which made me feel like Principal was still influencing how history was recorded.) I'm in the same boat as you with Knower, as well; I think there's a really strong argument to be made for both turning her light off and keeping it on, and I almost wish there was a third ending/epilogue based on that decision, because she's one of the most fascinating figures in the game. *(I tend to think of forgiveness as being more about the person doing the forgiving than the person being forgiven - does forgiving a person help you or harm you? I think that can really change depending on the person, and that, if two people come to opposite conclusions about forgiving the same person for causing the same harm, both of those decisions can be correct; some people are set free by forgiving and some are trapped by it, some people can't move forward without forgiveness and some people cannot move forward if they forgive, etc. This goes for Knower, too - I think Kris would be completely valid in never forgiving her, the core sisters would be completely valid for forgiving her, and Watcher and Blue would be equally valid if they never forgave her or if they forgave her for everything, and all of those things can coexist. But that's just me - forgiveness means a lot of different things to different people, and I think the game does an incredible job of demonstrating that without trying to moralize about what forgiveness should mean to anyone.) Also, thanks for the shout-out at the end! <3 Aaaaaand it turns out I did have a lot to comment after all. Whoops.
It breaks my heart that this game didn't perform well, but I also kind of get it. I am THE target audience for this game. I am a huge fan of Persona 5 and I'm really big on deckbuilders. Granted, most of those are roguelike deckbuilders, but as someone who has sizeable collections of both Yugioh and Magic cards, I'm also very much open to playing non-roguelike deckbuilders. But this game just did not communicate any of that to me clearly. I somehow managed to completely miss the game's launch. Didn't even know it was getting released. Then some time later, when Steam got around to recommending it for me, the Steam page didn't really tell me anything about the game. The trailers showed no gameplay and the images showed a lot of screenshots looking badass without really showing any gameplay. There may have been 1 screenshot with the battle field and cards. So I wishlisted it, just because I am that big of a deckbilder fan, and figured I'd wait for a sale, since none of what the devs choose to highlight on the steam page actually conveyed what the game is like. They just had to say "Tactical turn-based combat with deckbuilding elements and a sprinkle of Persona 5" and that would have been it, I'd have bought it for full price. The only reason I ended up playing it at all is because I read that it would be leaving the PS Plus Extra game catalogue the following month. I hadn't even known it was free to PS Plus subscribers in the first place. So I raced to try it, with exceedingly low expectations, only to end up sinking double-digit hours into the game day after day! After act 1, I got the Ultimate Edition anyway, just because I knew this was something I would want to replay and take my time enjoying (and also to get the DLC characters). That's right, they'd game the game to me for free and I still ended up buying it! And I think this speaks of the game's marketing failure. Matt has a different perspective because he'd been eagerly anticipating it, but the marketing team also needs to communicate what it is they're selling. I just went to the Steam page for Midnight Suns while writing this comment and the game still does nothing to properly sell you on it. It's like they don't believe in the gameplay mechanics they've so masterfully crafted that they have to hide them behind screenshots of superheroes looking cool. It really is a shame.
of the many, many things i loved about this game, their spin on "darmok and jalad at tanagra" with the alien communication was a great piece of an even greater puzzle
I played this game a year ago and had fun. Like a week ago, RU-vid randomly recommended same old story to me, and i don't think i have ever had a song throw me into such a level of nostalgia that i felt like i needed to play the game again right then. Only reason i didn't was because i bought my friend a copy and played with him. We both put like 60 hours into it. Cassette beasts is such a phenomenal game. And like you said, those vibes are freaking immaculate.
Thanks for making this. 1000xResist is a very special game with so much to unpack. I'm glad to see some deep dive video essays popping up now. I also appreciated the 13 Sentinels shout out. Both of these games are some of my favorite sci-fi stories, but I think you're right that 1000xResist does a lot more thematically with the constant twists.
Father's speech about fighting even when you can't win spoke so deeply to me. It was something I've often thought or felt, but never could put into words. Easily my favorite game of the year, and one of the best games of all time, imo.
9:00 tbh i never found the voice acting "understated" if anything this was first time in any piece of media I actually took a note of voice acting and i was very impressed. each character has such a personality from the moment they open (or i guess don't open in this game XD) their mouth. I wonder if derth of other animations is the thing that made me take a note of these, as there is not much else besides voice to pay attention to in vast majority of the cutscenes
@@MattHorton "bad" in the sense that its not conventionally overacted or dramatically acted? If that's the case, then maybe.. But this was also the first time in a game where I was impressed by how human the characters sounded. The lack of overperforming sucked me in to every word as if it was important and really helped me connect with these characters more than ever.
Oh man, absolutely loved this game and this was a great tribute and discussion of it. Bell rung, liked and subscribed etc! To anyone who watched without playing first, please try it if you can. The writing throughout is incredible and although major plot points are covered here, there's a lot of small moments and devastating call back lines that really build up the experience. It's also just a gorgeous looking game imo - not so much in terms of detail, more the lighting, framing, use of colour and so on.
One of the best video essays on this game for sure, so good! Really thoughtful interpretations and analysis, and you got the developers in it too, hekki grace!
I passed on this when I saw it was a card game because random cards are almost always a lame game mechanic. I want to control my strat games, like Divinity OS. I got Midnight Suns free from Epic and it was fairly enjoyable. The card system was at least ok and other parts were well done. My fav to playL Hunter, Iron Man, Wolverine.
