It is an excellent song and performance. Yes there was the terrible famine & drought in some places but also in some african countries they are islamic and they never celebrate christmas anyway. We all did not even know about all that back then. Also most africans are livng in their traditional hunter and gatherer lifestyle so those ones are not really in poverty because they are living the lifestyle they have always lived in nature. Also native people never celebrated Christmas. Phil Collins did a great job on the drums, he started hitting those drums and had a strong look on his face and must of thought I have gotta keep this a strong and consistent beat through this whole song, I have to keep it going strong and I will. He did a great job and everybody else did also. But say a prayer.. Pray for the other one. A world outside your window..
I’m totally bummed. I remember the famine well. What I didn’t know until just a little ago was that Mengistu Haile Mariam, who was the dictator of Ethiopia during the famine of 83-85, took the money from the Live Aid donation and bought weapons . You can read it in Wikipedia.
