I know this is an old video, but I am about to track my atom for the first time. What was the lockup at 3:50? Was the from the brakes or downshift? Thanks much.
That looked like fun 😊 Ive been at Snetterton today and can fully appreciate what great driving display that was from you both, best man won in the end lol. That GT4 seems absolutely rapid though is it standard?
Hi there, thanks for the comment. Snetterton is a great track, probably my favourite, hope you had good weather? My friends GT4 in the video was lightly modified. He had some Manthey Racing chassis component changes to give more adjustment to the geometry for a more aggressive setup. If I remember correctly, I think he had a larger throttle body from a GT3 fitted as well. Other than that, his car was standard, but he knows how to pedal a car :-)
@terrorstain without a doubt great driving the pair of you. We had great weather for once, fairly new to track days but we have been having instruction and hopefully improving, I posted a lap on my page. I've got some way to go to match the lap times you guys are banging out.
You are clearly enjoying fast laps rather than racing. No doubt you could have overtaken the Porsche at various points. But I'm surprised by how capable the GT4 is in comparison. What spec is your Atom? Great video.
@dtb4443 Thanks for thr comment. The driver of the GT4 is a track day buddy of mine with a lot of experience, he definitely knows how to pedal a car so that obviously makes a difference. If I remember correctly (this was six years ago now!!!) I think his GT4 had some minor Manthey Racing upgrades to the suspension and I seem to recall it also had a larger throttle body from a GT3. Performance wise back then, my atom was in factory supercharged spec (claimed 310 bhp) with 10 way Bilsteins and larger Alcon brakes front/rear. It also had carbon wings front and rear but the jury is out on whether they make any improvement to performance, personally I very much doubt it but they look cool! I've changed a lot since then. GT4 is a great car and indeed extremely capable. That day still stands out as one of my favourite track outings, it was a lot of fun playing with the Porsche! Cheers.
Great vid. I've owned my Atom 6 years now and I'm ashamed to say it has it's first track outing booked on the 19th of this month. I've tried looking for a really good driver's guide for the car but struggling. I can imagine much of the requirements required due to it's layout and weight but would be great to hear a few tips from yourself.
@@terrorstain I was lucky enough to drive one on a driving experience day & then a semi pro race driver showed me how it’s really done!!. FAAAARK THAT THING WAS SAVAGE!!!!!😲😍
@@terrorstain I gave someone a ride in my Atom 4 a couple of days ago and he suggested doing passenger rides for a charity he works for. I don't consider myself to have enough experience and definitely not to be doing it on a public road but it did get me wondering to how it works for public liability insurance for these passenger rides you guys are doing.
@@markmawer personally I'm not a massive fan of road based "experience" rides. For the ones I participate in on track, drivers/passengers sign waiver forms. Drivers don't receive any form of compensation (financial or otherwise) either directly or indirectly, in simplistic terms we are simply offering a passenger ride to people that have made a charitable donation by buying a ticket from the event organisers. "Normal" road insurance is invalid on a track day so that doesn't apply, you can get specific track day cover but that is normally solely for the vehicle and not for the occupants.
Thank you very much for the comment! The chap in the Gayman GT4 is a track day buddy of mine, maybe he should have been shown the blue flag but I was having too much fun to care ;-)
Not at all. I used a GoPro Max with a few bits from the "ram mount" (Google them) range, including a roll hoop clamp. I've not long bought the GoPro Max, I've put another vid online from the recent Supercar Event with the entire video in "raw" 360 so you can scroll the video around. Maybe worth a view if you want to see how it performs. P.S. nice Zenos, a real shame they went under!
@@terrorstain Thanks. The raw 360 video is excellent. The Zenos is a great car, but not as tail-happy as the Atom. :) Mine is off the road, getting a bit more power without going for forced induction.
Clever isn't it! I was hoping it would give a more "realistic" viewpoint and feel for being in the car. Think I might start using it a bit more in future, the only downside is I haven't worked out a way to overlay other camera footage (eg passenger cam) or data logger info (speed/rpm/pedal position etc) over raw 360 degree footage. Cheers for the comment :-)
You are most welcome! Glad you enjoyed your passenger ride and thank you for supporting the Children's Trust! Come along again in 2023 and see if you can make it round the track without screaming ;-)
Fantastic!!! Looked epic as ever 🤩 I remember very well the few times I’ve been lucky enough to be a passenger with you, Brands at the NFA day and The Supercar Event at Dunsfold 👏🏼
Bizarre comment. Of course if the GT4 weighed the same as an atom it would be quicker, it has close to 400bhp from a 3.8litre flat 6 and a top speed of around 180mph. But unless Porsche find a way to trim over 700kg of weight from a GT4 then I'm afraid it's academic.
That's very kind, thanks for the comment! The Supercar Event is back this coming Friday and Saturday at Goodwood. I'll be back again giving passenger rides both days :-)
Great Video! Saw this from a link on Merc Racing and I am considering one of their supercharger kits for my K24z7 Ariel Atom. Car to share details on your system and performance numbers?
Hi there, thanks for the comment. Unless Merc have changed their adapter plate (sits between TVS1320 and Merc charge cooler inlet manifold), the kit will NOT fit. I had to have a new custom adapter plate designed and manufactured to get the supercharger to clear one of the chassis rails. Merc may have changed this but I do not know, you would have to check with them. I've now upgraded the entire fuel system to a "return to tank" system as well as baffled tank, Bosch 044 high pressure pump, ID1050X injectors, swirl pot, better filters, adjustable pressure regulator etc etc. I've also fitted a larger throttle body and changed the air filter design and location allowing fitment of two custom made charge cooler heat exchangers. The whole system has been designed with massive headroom and keeps IAT's nice and low. I had it tuned conservatively not wanting to exceed circa 400bhp at the crank. I had to fit a larger pulley on initial tuning as it was putting out too much power for my target. Ended up also dropping rev limit very slightly to reign in peak power and settled on circa 360bhp at the WHEELS on a hub mounted dyno. With a change of rods/pistons the boost could be turned up for significant gains as the charger is not working very hard at all. It's very linear, surprisingly feels less "manic" than when running approx 350bhp at the crank with the standard JRSC wound up and charge cooled. It basically feels like a "larger" engine. It wasn't a straight swap/conversion, unless you are like me and handy with the spanners it could work out very costly to do do the work "properly". I've made loads of other changes etc, too many to list. Good luck! :-)
@@terrorstain Thank you so much for the information. My naturally aspirated SRA puts out about 230 at the crank in it's current form and I've been thinking about power upgrade options. Option 1 is to have the head flowed, add some cams and a good tune which will bump the HP to ~260. Not a huge HP gain but a simple approach that does not add any weight. Option 2 would be a supercharger. For longevity, I was thinking keeping the crank output to 300-320 which I'm also hoping will minimize heat issues. I've got a lot more research to do before I proceed but you've given me some very specific questions to ask Merc Racing when I talk to them.
Unfortunately the V8 atom is too noisy to be allowed on UK track days. Even if it was, and assuming you could find a used one for sale (I think Ariel only made around 20), you'd have to spend around £150K to get one!! If I wanted a proper track car for serious lap times I'd have been better off buying a Radical :-) Cheers!
Great driving ...at the end saw another Atom coming up fast behing you guys ! Crashed my Atom 3.5 at Snett a few weeks ago ..excuse for getting a 4 lol
@Ray Arthur Yes, the other atom at the end of the clip is a friend of mine, we were all out together. I read about your crash in the thread you posted over on the owners forum. Really awful to read, you have my sympathy! Glad you wasn't hurt and good to know it hasn't put you off! Cheers for the comment :-)
Thanks for the comment! For the money an Atom is hard to beat for outright fun, it always puts a smile on my face :-) I have to be honest though, they aren't as reliable as i was expecting, thankfully I'm good with the spannering!
@@hotchihuahua1546 I agree 100%, being so light the atom is under a lot less stress than a "normal" weight car. I wouldn't want to be paying the price for Porsche brakes/tyres etc either ;-)
At the time of this charity event, passengers did not HAVE to wear a helmet. They were offered one but it was optional, so if they weren't wearing one it was their choice. Nowadays, helmets are mandatory at these events. I see this is the second time you've posted about this, so hope you are now happy :-) Thanks for the comment!
Hi there. Because I do a fair amount of charity days and often have passengers at track days, I've had my car corner weighted with 70kg of ballast in the passenger seat. Even so, with a passenger there is a noticeable difference, obviously bhp/ton is reduced so the acceleration is knocked back. With larger passengers (I've had some that barely fit in the seat!) the handling is noticeably compromised and you have to be careful when pushing on, the car is extra "twitchy" with a large mass in the passenger side. Like Colin Chapman said, "less is more" :-)
@@terrorstain Thanks much. Just picked up an Atom 2 Ecotec Super and am tinkering with setup. Your answer helps a lot and is a great data point for me.
Do you have to dab the accelerator pedal when shifting down like that on the Atom or is that just personal preference to give faster shifts between gears?
You don't "have to", it just helps smooth the drivetrain whilst down changing under hard braking. It's called "heel and toe" , basically it's rev matching. The atom has all the weight at the back so under hard braking/turn in it acts like a pendulum, heel and toeing just keeps things smoother. Thanks for the comment!
Wanted to talk to you about the Merc Racing TVS kit as well as your recording/data setup here. I have a TVS blower on my Elise and love it, would like to get an intercooled TVS blower on my Atom next.
Thank you very much for an awesome, unforgettable experience! The way that machine ejects it’s self out of corners is electric! I’m already looking for the next buzz!
@Declan James Are you the passenger in this vid?! My pleasure, glad you enjoyed your ride and thanks very much for supporting a worthy cause! Next years dates have been released so maybe see you again :-)
Yeah, I am the passenger in this vid, truly awesome experience! I’m not sure I can wait till next year, I’m looking at booking a track day for bikes in the near future! If you’re ever in need of a passenger I’ll buy you a 99 flake at lunch! 🤣
@@declanjames1188 that's great to hear!! Be warned it's a slippery slope, if you get the bug you will be hooked and become a fellow track addict! Best of luck, stay safe and thanks again :-)
@@arielatommad8939 TVS1320 supercharger, custom inlet/intake system with chargecooler, uprated cooling system, oil cooler, upgraded fuel system (including baffled tank, swirl pot, different injectors/filters/fuel pump etc) plus loads of other bits. My setup is capable of running a lot more power (probably somewhere around 500bhp at the crank) but I want reliability so it's been configured and tuned conservatively
Hi Ed, have been watching your videos since you took me around Goodwood last weekend, we were chasing the MP4-12. Your footwork is incredible - did you teach yourself? I would love to learn to drive like that one day and the Atom was just brilliant! Do you have any other videos from the Supercar Event last week you'd be able to send over privately? Many thanks, Ed.
Hi Ed, many thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed your passenger ride. If I remember correctly you are the pilot? I've not had professional tuition to drive, I am self taught but have friends who race and drive much better than me so sometimes pester them with questions! If you look at my early videos you will see the difference a few years in the seat makes with lots of track time. Yes, I have more footage from Goodwood, as and when I get time I will put some more videos together and online. Do you remember the colour of the McLaren we were behind, it would make it easier to try and find footage of your ride if I have it? I believe the dates for next year's Supercar Event have been pencilled in so hope to see you again next year! Cheers :-)
@@terrorstain Yes that’s me! Well that’s an amazing success story, mesmerising to watch and to try and understand how you’re balancing the car. I’ll be sure to check out your earlier videos too. It was a dark red McLaren, no rush at all though. Yes work dependant I’d love to be there ! Thanks for your reply. All the best, Ed.
