"Son, you failed me. Much like how the stage production Rock Opera "Tommy" failed to connect with critics and audiences alike. I'm Casey Kasem."

Clearly that audience just sucked because I need to see that sketch now.

Gee who' would have thought a sketch about Casey Kasem wouldn't play with a mass audience in the mid 2010's!? It's a very funny sounding sketch don't get me wrong but SNL is not the place for it and they should've realised that.

It figures that SNL would kill a sketch that was actually hilarious. They wanted something bland and unfunny instead.

That laughing that Bill describes is actually very dangerous! It cuts the air supply off to your lungs. In the UK in the late 70s a famous sketch show called The Goodies was v popular. One episode was a Rip of the Kung Fu drama set in Yorkshire and celebrated the famous martial arts called ekevthump! Anyway one man laughed so hard that this is what happened to him!

I was going to look up this sketch until he explained the stupid audience basically decided this won't make it to taping. I almost passed out laughing so hard.

Such the reason that I never went into comedy. Most laughs I ever got were when things went the wrong way. When I suffered.

Sometimes I wonder if the attempts to crossover have affected the audience's connection to the main event. Do people know in advance who the musical guest will be when they get to the show? Often it seems the musical guest attracts a way different demographic than the guest host & sketches would resonate with.

I've heard Bill tell this story on other podcasts, and its still crazy to me that this didn't destroy. Was it a young crowd that didn't know who Casey Kasem was or something? I guess because I basically grew up with Kasem's voice both on the radio and in every other cartoon I was watching at the time, it resonates, but I dunno, it's just so weird how something so obviously hilarious didn't go over.

OMG! That is GENIUS! No way a human-being talks like Casey Kasem did, in every day life. It is brilliant to imagine Casey Kasem talking like that during serious moments in his life. This should have been a recurring sketch. Bill Hader and Daney Carvey need to crowdfund this sketch.

It’s most likely bc the audience was just generally unaware of Casey Kasem or what his voice sounded like. What you learn sometimes is that, even though certain things are funny to you, if your audience has no frame of reference for a particular joke, then it’s too inside and therefore is unusable.
