An outstanding collection of our national heritage in song. More power to the written word and the preservation of our island's heritage.

I'm from Saint Lucia. This reminds me of my days as a boy. Couldn't speak a word of creole. But my whole family loved this song when it was played on the radio. My creole is much better now. 😂

Oh what a beautiful folk song. I love it. The writer, singers and musicians captured the essence of Dominican and Caribbean Culture perfectly at the time; and most of all a haunting Melody. A master piece. I was a young boy living in St. Lucia when this song was released somewhere in the 70's. Still love it more today.

Not familiar with the language so I have no idea what the song is about but a good tune is a good tune 😊 and I loved listening to this one when I was a kid back in Guyana. I’m told it started playing on local stations a lot around Carifesta time in 72.

Thanks for your help with a few of those difficult words! I tried to translate it into English below. I may be wrong on a couple of words (sipyé, siwik ka konyen tanbou, etc). Sé piti biten ki ka fè ou enmé Donmnik, Kon lodè gwiyav e zannanna, Tout diféwan gou mango E lébwa lé ti gason ki ka tjwé bégas Tout sa andan y. Sé biten sala ka pa ka janmen mò Ti biten la, nou lévé épi y Bondyé ban nou tout sé bagay sala pou plézi kò nou E annou tjenn li konsa, ay. These little things that make you love Dominica Like the scent of guavas and pineapples, All the different kinds of mango And in the woods where the boys hunt woodcock (type of bird) All of this is part of it. These things will never die out The(se) little thing(s) we grew up with God has given us all of these things to make us happy And let us keep it this way. Sé piti biten ki ka fè ou enmé Donmnik Solèy la épi (I have no idea) lannwit Sipyé ka chanté an hazyé E gason ka voyé wòch déyè sikiyé Tout sa andan y. Sé biten sala ka pa ka janmen mò Ti biten la, nou lévé épi y Bondyé ban nou tout sé bagay sala pou plézi kò nou E annou tjenn li konsa, ay. These little things that make you love Dominica The sun and (I have no idea) the night (Sipyé?) sing in the forest And boys throw rocks at bananaquit (a type of bird) All of this is part of it. These things will never die out The(se) little thing(s) we grew up with God has given us all of these things to make us happy And let us keep it this way. Sé piti biten ki ka fè ou enmé Donmnik Lè kwapo ka hélé lannwit, Siwik ka konyen tanbou, A tou yo sé moun lan ka tjenbé yo épi bouzay tout sa andan y Sé biten sala ka pa ka janmen mò Ti biten la, nou lévé épi y Bondyé ban nou tout sé bagay sala pou plézi kò nou E annou tjenn li konsa, ay. These little things that make you love Dominica Where frogs sing during the night, And the blue crabs beat their drums (not sure the context of this?) And people catch them with (bouzay - traps of some sort?) All of this is part of it. These things will never die out The(se) little thing(s) we grew up with God has given us all of these things to make us happy And let us keep it this way. Sé piti biten ki ka fè ou enmé Donmnik Nonm ka alé tjenbé mannikou, Lè lalin ka kléwé asyèl E yo ka ale larivyè pou haché pwéson Tout sa andan y Sé biten sala ka pa ka janmen mò Ti biten la, nou lévé épi y Bondyé ban nou tout sé bagay sala pou plézi kò nou E annou tjenn li konsa, ay. These little things that make you love Dominica The men catch opossums When the moon is shining in the sky And they go to the river to chop/buy fish These things will never die out The(se) little thing(s) we grew up with God has given us all of these things to make us happy And let us keep it this way. Sé piti biten ki ka fè ou enmé Donmnik Zanfan ka lé tjouwi zikak, Moun ka tiwé tim-tim le swé E tout moun ka kouwi mas jis jou ouvè Tout sa andan y Sé biten sala ka pa ka janmen mò Ti biten la, nou lévé épi y Bondyé ban nou tout sé bagay sala pou plézi kò nou E annou tjenn li konsa, ay. These little things that make you love Dominica The children like to pick hog plums People tell stories/riddles in the evening And everyone runs in the carnival band until daybreak Tout sa andan y These things will never die out The(se) little thing(s) we grew up with God has given us all of these things to make us happy And let us keep it this way.

Yes, u are spot on! hazyé is more to describe "the bush" instead of forest but same thing i guess. And the blue crabs beat their drums- im guessing she is just using imagery, like the crabs are hitting their claws against the stones making noise. And people catch them with (bouzay - traps of some sort?) a bouzay is like them old fashioned lamp, they used way back in the day sipyé means mat from what i remember so i'll have to find out about that one.
