@@StewDaJew Before the modern horn with valves was invented at around 1850. the natural horn was used: every note, which was not on the natural scale, could only be reached with a hand stopping technique. As you correctly suspected, it also produces a much more warm sound with the hand in the bell. The hand position can also have a big impact on the intonation. Last but not least it’s more comfortable to hold and a nice & warm spot to put your hand. ;-)

It's the sound of Brahms in a German orchestra. Vibrato, especially on strings, is an aural tradition that produces a unique sound. We believe that this quality is seen as a characteristic in Europe, a multi-ethnic country, and is something that is unique to each ethnic group's DNA.
Impressive. Mahler is scary to perform because the voices are so exposed like a concertante with nowhere to hide, but these students have everything covered. Harp, brass, winds, etc. are all virtuosi. But why do the oboes & clarinets raise their instruments horizontally like trumpets? Is that something Mahler put in the score? I don't think I've seen that before. Thanks for posting this performance!
Hi, I don't know for this specific symphony, but Mahler does ask for raised oboes and clarinets ounce in a while. He also sometimes specifies it for the horns.
Es fällt schwer neue, um ihre Worte zu nutzen, "bedarfte" Spieler zu fördern, wenn Leute wie sie unter Konzert Videos von den Musikern der Zukunft, nichts besseres zu tun haben als Jugendliche, als nicht erfahren zu bezeichnen und ihre sonst überragende Leistung herunterzureden. Und die Konsequenz aus ihrer Kritik Bestände ja darin diese herausragenden Spieler bis nach dem Studium mit Etuden abzufertigen. Wie soll denn dabei Musikalität über ein leicht gehobenes Niveau gefördert werden. Mit einer solch verschlossenen Haltung sorgen sie dafür dass, was sie hier als "unbedarft exekutiert", bezeichnen weit über dem Professionellen Standard liegen wird, den ihre Vorstellung von Pädagogik induzieren würde. Really nice recording, and that's playing teenagers WOW. Who is the first trumpeter, and where is he studying? I am a trumpet player too, and I am impressed of his playing at this age.
Having a instrument's sheet isolated like this, helps you really appreciate how beautifully it is played, especially in this part and the 5th movement, where the horn in my opinion, is my favourite.
