I’m curious why the rounds you split in this video (and some others you showed )are so long? Is it because you’ve got a really big wood stove box? Wouldn’t it be much easier to split if you cut shorter lengths? I just finished splitting and stacking lots of 16”L chunks of partially seasoned white oak and black locust (still were wet in the middle) - cleaved the bark off them too + cross-stacked the oak so it will dry faster. Got 6 stacks next to the wood stove with a fan setup to blow heat through them soon as I start burning up here in Buckland, Ma. Smaller pieces that are cross-stacked dry in no time next to a stove. Mornings are now starting to get down into the lower 50’s to mid to upper 40’s. I’m 77 and am grateful as are you that I can still split-n-stack and enjoy the dry, radiant heat coming from my woody! Thanks for sharing the vids! 🙏🏻😎👍🏻
I like your videos. I’m working on getting together all the things I need to make a JA chair. What are the advantages of your airfoil vs. a regular rung? Thanks
Airfoil is less likely to bend, when weaving the seat. I use fiber rush, so there are a lot of wraps. Bigger seats, like my rocking chair, need the Airfoil more.
Hi Tom thanks for sharing all your videos! I'm following your process to make a chair from a recently felled Ash here in Oxfordshire, UK. I've successfully split out the rough components and steam bent the rear posts. Question is, how to know when they are all dry enough to carry on making? Do you use a moisture meter? Again, thanks so much for all your work.
Hi Tom, I’ll try to keep this short. Firstly thank you for all the videos you’ve made. I just found your RU-vid channel the other day and have been watching all the how to make a chair series from about three years ago, really great. Some years ago I purchased Drew Langsner’s book “The Chairmakers Workshop”, there’s a picture of your three slat chair in there that I always really loved and wondered who you were. Well now I know who you are and am very thankful for the instruction you’ve given on that particular chair. I have built a number of Windsor chairs after some instruction from Curtis Buchanan but would now like to try some ladder backs. After all these years it’s nice to finally put a face to the maker of the chair I saw in Drew’s book. Maybe we’ll meet someday, until then, I wish you the very best and thank you again for the information. I posted on these comments because I didn’t expect you see it if I posted on the comments from 3 years ago. Bruce 🇨🇦
Thanks for your sharing. I think its time to build one and get to start the steam bending experiments. Hope to make chairs with steam bending back posts in 2024.
Thanks for taking the time to post another video. If you find the time could you post something about the construction and dimensions of your steam box... thanks and heal well.
Thanks Tom. I've been finished two chairs by using Tom's concept in the "how to make a chair" videos, but I cut the back posts from the lumber directly not steam bending. And also want to know about the steam box.
I think you did give all the information on the shaving horse videos, if I recall correctly. Those were the first videos I saw on your channel. I missed out on buying a kit- but I’ll go back to see them bcuz I’m pretty sure you explained everything. I certainly hope you mend and heal soon and make some chairs!
Thanks for filming and sharing this Tom. It was a pleasure meeting you at the get together. Your love for this craft was obvious and your story about how you started making chairs and the people who inspired you was very moving. Hope we cross paths again. Best, Chuck
Just finished your chair video series. It was excellent. I really enjoyed the ideas to use joiner, planer and bandsaw in the process. I have started doing that as well in my efforts. I have made several post and rung stools and am now working on a chair. Over the past 2 years I have taken classes at JCCFS. Hope you teach one in the future Thanks again for all your videos. They are a fantastic. I used your videos to make my shaving horse in the past I will soon watch the rocking chair series Thanks again
