Hi there I bought this tool, but still I couldnt get out the lighter out of the housing. The tool always slides out while turning the top knurled nut. I also have the feeling that the two notches which should press the pins are not moving enough. Any advice how to get that d... thing out? BTW it's from a 08 VW Touareg in the center console next to the shifting handle
Thanks very useful video. Yep, you are correct - if you dont use a tool, very good chance you will destroy the socket - definately did a number on mine. Did find a replacement socket but not the light bezel. Do you have the part# for the bezel and/or where you might be able to find one. Have not located one yet. Thanks
Fxcking volkswagen crxp strikes again, special tool for everything, including removing a godforsaken cigarette lighter socket. Why vw. Make everything so it's lasts again so we don't need the special tool in the first place.
How this is useful to anyone that doesn't need to remove it regularly? No one is going to buy an expensive tool only to do it once or twice. That's just stupid.
Exactly why I just went by my local Audi dealership and asked the service department if they would pop it out for me. They were more than happy to do it...said it was probably the only time that tool had ever been used there :)
Thank you so much❤. Just purchased an older Q5 with a missing joystick cover. After watching your video, I ordered the missing cover from eBay and easily installed with no problem. Thank you again!
By using the FORCE/mallet you'll probably break the metal pins of the housing - but its definitely an option of you want just to disassemble and remove the housing - without reusing/assembling it back later... :)
@@RetrofitGuy nah. The metal pibs are protected by the plastic housing. The "just hard enough" rubber mallet whack simply dislodged the metal holes from the plastic tabs holding it in place.
@@DavidHeyburn Yeah I had a mallet from a leather kit didn't even use a strong tap, just held it while I tap it bit by bit and came out. As I need to still use it but spray painting the center console.
@@philip00010 Found The issue, the spring was stuck inside preventing movement, took it out put it back on the button push slightly hard and it snapped back into place now it moves all 4 sides 👌 Thanks for the info bro 🤜
If so - you actually need 2 picks and 4 hands: 2 hands to push 2 picks in opposite directions, 1 hand to hold the housing and 4th one to actually pull housing... :))) Feasible - but really not straight forward... :)))
I bought this tool and my cigarette housing is more then 50% out but now its hard because when i try to pull i got the feeling i pull the orange plastic also... Im removing the cigarrete lighter out of the center arm box from a audi a5 B8. Do i just have to pull hard and be like if it breaks it breaks?
You should not be pulling the orange plastic out but just the metal part if both teeth of the tool are pressing the inner walls of the cigarette lighter cylinder. Once you insert the tool - be sure you rotate it until you feel the "click" - meaning those tool teeth actually got "caught" in the cylinder holes... If all "caught up" and still seems you pull everything out - I may assume its all stuck / rusted there due to age. There is a need to apply some pressure but not too much.. Depends on condition of cigarette lighter...I may assume you have no choice but to pull and 50/50 you break the yellow plastic surrounding... Hope this helps.
@@philip00010 cool thank you very much! idc if I have to buy a new orange/yellowy part because there is a coin stuck inside and now already for like 4 years I cant use it so it will probably be just pulling and see what happens ;) thanks for the help!
Hello, I'm hoping you can help me. I have a 2016 Audi A5 coupe. I went to push a plug onto the rear cigarette lighter and the whole cigarette housing went in side the back wall. How can I bring my cigarette light back out? The lighter works. I must have pushed to hard and pushed it through! Please help...your expertise is much appreciated.
Hi. Assuming whole cigarette lighter was pushed in somehow - its the surrounding plastic/leather housing that somehow got enlarged. In this scenario I can only recommend to disassemble that housing and get access to this lighter from the back - and remove it as its pushed all way in now. To disassemble plastic - you will need to remove rear air vents, possibly read climate, to get access to screws that hold that housing in plastic. Or try removing just the vents first - as it may give you access to the cigarette housing - so you could get it out...Then disassemble it as per my video - and assemble back in the that leather/plastic housing - if the hole is not broken/enlarged/damaged obviously... Hope above info is of a benefit, and helps. Thanks.
@@philip00010 it was me that pushed it in..interesting, I can't open a cap on a water bottle but I have enough strength to push a cigarette lighter through the wall. Lol. I did look at taking the vent apart. It appears the rear vent is attached to a whole unit to the front, making this a big job for a small issue. I left it go. I tried to get it back through the hole and I can not. Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. I think your videos are excellent. I appreciate your time and work.
@@e.shealer2417 Thanks for kind words. Appreciated. I'm more than confident those 2 rear vents can be ejected as one piece - and it can give you enough room to get access to that problematic cigarette lighter socket - but of course triple check - as you do not want to damage the vents themselves because those fenders are very delicate and can break easily. Stay safe out there! Regards.
Thanks for the video; but I could not see the exact spot where you pressed to remove the glass hole out of the clip. Did you press downward, upward, right, left? I am trying to replace the glass window on the passenger front side and getting stuck :). Can you direct or show me? Mine is a 2013 Q5 Premium Plus. I had to cut the glue out to remove the speaker. I have some photos that I took to share with you if you would like. Pls help to respond to my my email @ w170lee@yahoo. Thanks
Q5 can be slightly different though vs Q7 but I'm sure the idea stays the same. Email sent. Let me know where you are stuck and I can try to assist the best I can.
After replacing it, all my mmi buttons lost their function (still red background light) beside the scroll function of the vig wheel and the volume regulation. Everything else in connection with pressing a button doesn‘t work anymore. Can anybody tell me what I could‘ve done wrong or what to check? Does the copper fixation rod has to sit in a special position on the plastic joystick?
You should have done nothing wrong. Just inserting the joystick into copper fixation rod - and that's it. Rod has no "special" position - it always points to center. So you say vig wheel works and volume also - nothing more... All the buttons and knobs are connected to same board underneath - and should work - especially if you have light... Maybe one of buttons stuck? Check them all... Is the joystick you just replaced also working? is it inserted correctly? I mean maybe you "missed" the rod somehow? Just a wild assumption...
@@philip00010 Feedback the day after: It works just fine now. I guess the Problem was somehow connected to my approach: The MMI was switched on during my replacement work. Maybe this caused some small current/voltage loss and provoked an error which disappeared overnight. Otherwise idk what could‘ve cause the issue yesterday.. :)
Hi. No unscrewing required. You just pull it out. Its just a small thin metal rod the button is sitting on. Installation same way: just push new button in while applying firm pressure - until it goes in. Hope this helps. Thanks.
@@tallwelch if sits loosely but same level as it should - maybe the button's plastic leg is already broken and just hangs on the metal rod of MMI? Technically it requires some force to push it down on the rod. Try to pull the button up and see if its leg is not broken. if all good - push it firmly until is reaches the end - lining up with the center knob that this button is part of... hope this info helps.
hi, im gonna do it in next week, in my case is the driver side on the right (UK), the reason is my window regulator wires are snapped , need to order the kit first and replace. do you know is it hard to replace the new window regulator ? is it screwed to the door body by the screw or is more complicated ? thanks in advance for you help
Well as I was mentioning in the description of this video - I was replacing the glass, upgrading it to "Double/Аcoustic glazing" glass. Some Q7s were equipped with option called "Acoustic/Security Glass" which is thicker glass (sandwich of 2 glasses) for less outside noise and more durable to breakage obviously...
@@RetrofitGuy WOW! I did not know that even existed. Very cool! Missed that detail in the description. Did you notice a difference in sound after switching the glass?
joystick base/leg is the one what gets broken - its made of plastic.... The joystick plastic base is inserted into metal pin inside MMI itself... once joystick's plastic breaks - its "hat" stays on MMI - until you touch it - where it falls off eventually from the metal pin of MMI. Metal pin never get's broken - joystick does - due to fact its fully plastic - and applying pressure on it over years of usage , mixed with exposure to sun - makes the plastic base of joystick crack eventually... Hope this info helps.
I took a small screwdriver and just pried out the stuck plastic part. Was also afraid to damage something, but that flips out quite easily when you lever it out
