Great video. I’m visiting the area at the moment and was very intrigued by the crossing over the A5. It would be ace to see this running again but I can’t see it happening now?!
I was beginning my RAF National service and our troop train took us to RAF Bridgenorth Also on this line at coalport spent some time evacuated from the bombing in Birmingham
Buildwas station was a junction station because this is where you change here for the wellington to craven arms railway and as of today nothing of the station survives
It ran down the bottoms of the gardens in Dorset Road. The home owners were given the opportunity to buy the land that was the track, to extend their gardens.
We used to live very near to this old Power station line at Hartlebury, Remember very well Class 25s and the odd class 37 taking coal in from the Hartlebury end down to the Power station, This was mainly done late Afternoon / Evening" and the trains always travelled slow on the Line, We lived at Poolands farm until 1983 and it Overlooked the Line" so we always saw many coal trains back and forth, Thank you for the share, Happy times in that area.👍
I am on the committee of a small society that look after the Old Abbey station in Shrewsbury This video is excellent and we would like to ask if we could show this Youtubbe video in the station on open days please Maybe come and see us on open days
Unfortunately, Holden is no longer with us, having passed away some years ago after a serious illness. You will probably need to contact RU-vid to verify whether the video can be aired elsewhere. Would be a nice memorial to Holden if you get permission - good luck!
Another who's just discovered this channel, and sorry to hear of author's passing - great vids. Often caught bus from Malpas to Chester in late '60s / early 70s, and Malpas station was a good mile-and-a-half from the town. Bus went over railway bridge at station where trackbed still 'fresh' after lifting of the line. Feature for many years after was the modern steel railway bridge over the A41 at Chowley Crossing near Tattenhall which our double decker only just seemed to squeeze under. Our bus crew on the C58 (conductor Archie Smith - a real character - and much quieter driver Bill) worked out of Whitchurch and came across to Crosville in the mid-60s after the mass closure of the Cambrian mainline & branches, where they'd worked as Fireman & Driver on the steam engines. I believe someone interviewed a number of these characters - great social history record, but can't find online again for the life of me.
It's only when one views many other lost railway presentations that you realise how good this bloke was. Very few are his equal and as others have said, a superb legacy has been left. And he's very much missed at his local cricket club too. RIP.
The line went through the callow quarry and across the top of David Davis new house farm to snailbeach my uncle Wilfred used to work in the quarry and uncle Ron lugged out of there for ea Evans and sons pontesbury
The burlish crossing gates with its house, was the stourport signal box mans house . And a gate man operated man operated crossing gates opening as and when train came. He sat in a hut by thegates . He had st vitas dance syndrome and he did not quite open the gates on time and a bubble car DMU. Eent through the closed gate knocking the gate man flying . But surved the incident . Luckily. Just before closure in 1960s. 😅
Of course there is no way the line will ever be re-instated from Ironbridge to Bridgnorth, from Ironbridge south, the land is suffering from rotational slips, the soggy ground is making its way to the Severn, a problem the GWR had yonks ago, you will need a bridge to get from the western tunnel mouth to Bridgnorth station, this was taken out decades ago because of the low height restriction. Also approaching Bridgnorth tunnel mouth, the trackbed is now a road through a housing estate. Who would pay for this anyway, who would look after the permanent way, the SVR have more than enough on their plate for the existing mileage. A new station with run round, would have to be built on the car park at Ironbridge, not to mention an engine house and space for stabling a set of carriages for the first train out, oh and a signal box, or at least a ground frame, then crossing gates need to be operated along the line, it will never happen, so just enjoy this lovely film, dream a bit, press the like button as I have.
Classic lack of foresight - men sweated and in many cases lost their lives building these lines, Dr Beeching closed many of them and 50 years later they've put half of this one back again at massive cost.
As a fellow cricket and railway enthusiast I was sad to learn that the author is now no longer with us. But what a recorded legacy he has left behind. Truly a feat for the eyes and very informative too. RIP Malcom.
2:56 I’m glad that the bridge abutment of the ditton priors bridge on the right is still here and everyone driving down Kidderminster road can see it as they drive by
Many years ago I walked the length of the line. The track was just about to be ripped up. Most stations were intact if rather derelict. The huge army depots were still complete although minus most sidings. When I was very young I did see an Austerity tank hurtling through Meole Brace towards Hookagate
It’s almost like when all of the lines closed under Beeching, it was a definitive effort to make a statement that railways were in the past and huge effort to prevent any possibility to bring them back into service. When you think of all of the greed and corruption in the high echelons of the political realm I’ll bet that many brown envelopes and back handers exchanged during the 60s
SVR Would have to aquire alot of land, including the golf club.Bridges need to be built......too big a project to be realised, when the Railway is short of funds anyway.......
I have heard the place called Nantwich is near Crewe, Cheshire, northwest of England 🏴. It is adjacent to Wales 🏴. The railway 🚃 line has been converted into a road. Back in 1900 over 123 previous years ago, people had horses 🐎 🐎 🐎 🐴 🐴 🐴 and carts 🛒 🛒 🛒. Cars 🚗 🚗 🚗 cars 🚙 🚙 🚙 🚘 🚘 🚘 weren’t invented until perhaps 🤔 the year 1901. People can cycle 🚲 underneath the bridge 🌉. It is sad 😔 that the line is gone perhaps 🤔 not enough rail passengers used the trains 🚊 and the business 🧑💼 is completely lost 😠 without coming back again anymore. 2 separate train 🚊 companies are in this film 🎞 are Arriva Trains 🚆 Wales 🏴 and CrossCountry Trains 🚊. Class 175s are now wearing the Transport For Wales 🏴 livery. 😄 👍 👊
The 2 x 2 car class 158s are wearing the 2nd Arriva Trains Wales 🏴 livery. Now in the Transport For Wales 🏴 livery. The man 👨 is wearing sunglasses 🕶 😎 and a cap 🧢. Disused railway 🚃 lines means that trains 🚆🚆🚊🚊 🚂 🚂 don’t run there anymore. Nantwich is in Cheshire in the northwest of England 🏴 near Crewe. People can walk on the old railway 🚃 disused line. More people in the present 💝 days have cars 🚘 🚙 🚗. It is a beautiful 😍 countryside containing trees 🌲🌲🌲 🌳🌳🌳. In 1910 there were plenty of steam trains 🚂 🚂 🚂 🚂. Steam trains 🚂 stopped ✋ 🛑 being used part of British Railway 🚃 since around perhaps 🤔 1964 nearly 60 previous years ago in 2023 because it causes pollution in the air. In the countryside, it is nice 👌 and quiet 🤫 🤐. People honestly can let their dogs 🐕 🐕🐕 🐶 🐶 🐶 🐩 🐩 🐩 off the leads as long as they behave themselves. 😃 👍
