Love your film. What are the best times to fish the Patuxent for trout as far as time of year? You guys fish below Brighton Dam? I just started fly fishing for bass but I am gonna try to get back up that way in the spring for some trout fishing. Keep up the good work.
I really like your video. How far below Brighton Dam is this? I started flyfishing for bass about 10 years ago before I moved south, Hope to get back to Maryland to do some trout fishing on the Patuxent
This is a good video, and idk people who complain about what type of fly you use, i just feel its silly because imitating a natural sub water insect is about as close as you can get to using actual bait. Maybe plastics are closer but i'd consider most plastics artificial bait, so whats problem with tying up some San Juan worms? Trout see worms and eat them during heavy rains, as well as fish eggs from other spawning fish. Hows that not matching what they see? Even if its far less subtle and requires a bit less precision its still the same idea. The only problem i had was of course the handling. Use your nets if you gotem, if not them get them, consider using barbless hooks, and always wet your hands, don't put a trout on dry land and get them back into the water as fast as possible and if possible don't take them out at all. I'm sure a lot of people already said this but its a fucking epidemic out there, i see people EVERYWHERE and CONSTANTLY just tossing trout back in after grabbing them with dry hands and holding them out of the water for 2 minutes. And evertime i see that i just say "well why not just keep the fucking thing then? If you didn't kill it at least fucked it up for good". Really want to spread the word because a LOT of people don't handle trout properly. I didn't know all the circumstances to make a good handle and release until about 2 years ago, I always tried to do my best but it still took me 20+ years to finally know every detail on how to properly release trout for the best survival chances, so don't feel bad or anything when people tell you how to properly handle them, they had to learn at some point too.
Hey Adam, I read through a lot of these comments, and was instantly appalled. I think your vision of the "Troutmen" is great. I think it could grow into something spectacular. The East doesn't get a lot of pivotal credit for it's fishing. I would like to add as constructive criticism, that you should try to represent the best waters that the mid-Atlantic has to offer, along with it's wild trout. Keep working towards that goal. I grew up on fly fishing in South Central Pennsylvania, walking in the footsteps of greats such as Charlie Meck, Ed Shenk, and Vince Mariano. The wild waters around are humbling. Since my childhood I've grown into a better fisherman, and it's been a passion since I don't remember when. I eventually started guiding in Alaska over the summers. I've been educated on proper fish handling etiquette and general practices of fly fishing. Don't worry about fishing glo-bugs and SJ worms, BUT, mix it up a little and really capture the sport, which is more than just "catching". It's fishing and it's challenging. I'm not here to question your ideas and your actions, or your skill, but I just want to encourage you to better the etiquette. I think the most important thing you need to remember is what your capturing through film and what you ultimately want to bring light to. I'm by no means a "purist", but I would love to see someone with your dedication to film do better and greater things. Please don't get discouraged by what I'm telling you, but invest the time into your fishing ethics, and time to really capture it all and get the bigger picture. I had a dream of making films and being sponsored by brands all around. I hate to see people bash those dreams. But, just remember that if fly fishing film is your goal, things need to change. Drop me an email sometime and we can talk further about the topic. Again, don't get discouraged, just find the path and stick to it. tbhess@outlook.com Sayakturutchiaq!
These are waters just like I fish and you have to wet your hands prior to touching those guys or they will die. Same with barbed hooks, even though they swim away just fine, if their protective layer is rubbed off by dry warm hands or their mouths are tore up due to barbed hooks they will die not too long after. It doesn't take but a week or two of stupid fishing to kill a river section.
The castle man is a stretched river that leads to the north branch Potomac, just like the savage river in Swanton md. Go to casselman if you want big rainbows and browns. They are mostly stocked because it's a smaller river but go to savage for wild brooks and brown. Fish the Potomac for all three Trout and the occasional cutthroat!
Dont touch them with warm hands.. They get schock so fast from warm hands .. and you destroy their protection layer.. 4.57.. Hurts my feelings.. amateurs..
What a lame attempt at a fly fishing video. Bobber fishing for 10 inch stocker rainbows accompanied by over-dramatic music. WITH BARBED HOOKS? Seriously guys you're better than that. Or maybe you're not.
Dude- seriously? WTF- you have nothing better to do? Let me guess- you spend all of your time fishing to only rising fish with catskill drys? I know I am late to the party but DB's like you piss me off. Go back through the comments and look at the ones that are from newbies to FF. They're gonna read your comments and assume we are all assholes...
awesome video bro. Don't sweat these other "professional" trout fisherman who just sit on youtube, watch other people catch fish and tell them what they are doing wrong. good production.
This is awesome, I am from New Oxford PA and have caught many sizable bows from that exact stretch of creek; In fact I have also stocked a lot of them as well up adjacent to the stretch that looks over the farm on Ziegler Mill Road. Good Fish and Tight Lines !
