Hi Paul here - Jurassic in age and in location (currently) !
Having grown up in Liverpool i was blessed having the playgrounds of The Lake District, Snowdonia, Peak District and the Yorkshire Dales on my doorstep.
After raising my family in France for 14 years i returned to the UK in 2019 and rediscovered my passion of the great outdoors and the positive benefits of mental and physical wellbeing by exploring the Jurassic coastline in Dorset, The New Forest and Dartmoor. I want to be able to share this love ,enthusiasm and my adventures to prove that even in my mid 50s you can get out there with nature.
I want to provide no fuss content on backpacking, camping, hikes, gear reviews and the like. If anything i publish helps just one person make a decision, inspires them or just provides them with any relevant information thats all im after.
Okay, firstly...of course you fell over. 🤣 Secondly...I've given this video a thumbs down because I was hoping for some Wild Beare style action!! 😆 Thirdly...that wasn't cow poo was it? I know what you're like! 💩 Great video matey. I did think the drone was going to smash into your tent when it was doing that circular shot. I do want to go to Dartmoor, must get out there sometime.
Hi Ian Yep agree the price is steep and it was very pushing my limit to pay for a tent but have to admit im so impressed by it. I think it will come into its own as we move into the winter months for sure. Paul
The Vern tents are perfectly fine…..as long as you use them within their limits just like all good tents. It looks like some folks have over hyped them little as if they are a true mountaineering tent which they are not. I think that’s what all the chatter is about….cheers!
Lots of bad reviews about this tent but mine is great I cant fault it, but then there are fans of other makers out there that will look for faults as always but they had been trying the tent out in 40 plus winds and it does mention in the booklet that comes with tent about double poling it for more strength also it does not really need seam sealing but users on here have mentions about sealing the areas were the toggles are as will let tiny droplets in but it does let much in and nothing to worry about and im yet to get out in the rain with mine as of yet
@@JurassicRambler you're welcome, myself looking at other reviews and some have not bothered seam sealing and the tent have done ok, also someone was out in theirs and I think the winds was at about 31 mph and higher gusts and it did well, myself wont go out in very high winds as I like a camp fire also I do astrophotography so the tent will do me well
It does look to be a good tent. I do think though they should have retained the extended storm protection over both entrances as they did on the original Vern 1. Seems an odd decision to drop that feature.
Loved your honest review. And Actually thanks for not mentionning the Vern 1 saga ! lol ! It looks such a great tent. Just subscribed to your channel. Cheers from Canada !
Great first impressions video matie. Looks like such a quality tent and I'm sure you can't wait to get out in her. She'll see you well through the winter months I'm sure. Look forward to see it in action!
This was the easter saturday last wknd in march.. a very weird storm that came across about 6ish and battered us for about 10-15 minutes. Nice spot to camp though
@@JurassicRambler Aye I’ve camped there before a few times. My dogs ashes are buried not too far away too below Margery Hill trig. I went up there April 6th
Thx Tam - appreciate the comment and sub. It was certainly tested and held its own. My friend mark had his durston xmid and that was pretty impressive also..paul
I was looking at these recently but they don’t seem to have the Large size. Do you know if they have just run out and don’t list it for that reason? It goes from M to XL on their site. I like the reviews I’ve seen on this. I was wondering what size you are. I’m 5’8” and 40” chest.
I tried the large and x large in the shop so they do have them.i ordered online as i wanted the blue not the black in-store.. i have always found decathlon customer service excellent in UK and they always respond if you have any stock queries.. its a cracking down jacket for the money…good luck. Im 5’11 and prob a 44 chest so i think the Large sounds about right size for you
Hi Thanks for watching I bought it from Ali Express - only cost about £11 - i think the store was PACOONE Camping Store. So far so good , very light and takes up no room
Great shot selection there Paul, really enjoyed that video mate. Looks like a lovely spot for a camp. Annoying the phone went on you, but you still got some good footage. 👍
Thx Mark - annoying it was and that i forgot the mic as it does impact the end footage.. i wanted to try and keep the footage as short as possible which can be a challenge as you well know
Lets see, Phone and Kindle went out, weird voices, huge light and NO external mike. did the probing start with a sharp pounding sensation? First time on your channel, I may have to watch more to see the outcome of the PROBING.
Thanks for liking and subscribing. Im wearing Revolution Race Nordwand Pro trousers- i love their kit, habe a couple of pairs if their trousers, hardwearing yet very comfortable.highly recommend them
I was lucky enough to get two of these fantastically warm jackets before 2020 when they were only 79.99 pound each im so glad i did they are just so warm i have never felt cold wearing this jacket and i camp from march til November great review
Brilliant mate. Enjoyed that. Hope your backpack has cleaned up okay? 😬 Fingers crossed next time we'll have some better weather so can have a bit of tent talk with some beers. Was good fun though pal and great to meet you. 👍
Thx Mark - all scrubbed up well now. It was a good laugh and great to meet up with you. I really enjoyed it pity about the weather- thx for the burgers and hot toddy in the rain !!
His comfortable temperature at rest should be between 0 , -5 C since the padding of this jacket is approximately equal to the padding of two mt100 pieces.
exactly , and you can literally see in video , how thick insulation and loft is , and due to the fact it's down - it must be warm . I have worn less insulated Icepeak down ski jacket , in strong and cold wind at 0 celsious ( due to wind feel was minus 8-10 ) and bellow down jacket I only had cotton t-shirt and didn't felt cold for one hour of standing up , sitting down . I just hate to layer too much , I love to have one baselayer and one jacket above it and that's it and it's enough for my climate and use . I have seen videos with Pumori parka , which is 700+ $ and it doesn't seem to be much more insulated . i am probably wrong because Pumori parka has almost 500 grams of down insulation and Decathlon has just 200 g .
Ah Paul, sorry about the stove issue. That sucks! Fair play for staying though. I hope you didn't need to ditch them steaks. Looked like a nice little spot you had there. My dream one day is to walk the South West Coastal Path. Gotta do it before I get too old though. I have to say, I'm not a fan of the Cascade Wild table. Nice and light, but always found it uneven and a bit of a faff. I can recommend the SOTO Field Hopper. Whilst it's expensive and not as light, it's dead easy to put up and pack away. It works really well.
Cheers Mark - ye just chalk it off as one of those camps. Agree on the table, it was a £12 punt but needs something on it to flatten it. Will take a look at the soto one- thx for recommendation mate P
Hi I went a size up on both tbh. I bought the lone peak first and took the advice from the shop to size up. I initially went for 0.5 size up but they told me to go for the full 1 size up. I bought the olympus 5 on the same principal and they fit superbly. As i said on the video these are a game changer for me . Happy shopping :-)
@@JurassicRambler Thanks. I've got the Lone Peaks that fit me great so I'm basically wondering if to buy the same size as my Lone Peaks or maybe size up. Are your Lone Peaks and Olympus the same size?
Good video. I spent some time on Dartmoor during my Royal Navy basic training 35 years ago and hated it. I left the Navy soon after having been "Withdrawn From Training" or woofted as we called it, i.e. kicked out! Now that I am 53 I've decided to get fit and get out on a Dartmoor wild camp in 2024 to "reclaim" the moor and banish those bad memories. Amazed people don't carry maps any more, they are probably the same idiots that wander into the military ranges (despite the huge signs, red and white poles and lights) because they have no mobile signal...
Agree on the maps. Im old school as well and get so much satisfaction of relaying the map to the terrain and vice versa. Good luck on reclaiming the moors in 24 - best wishes mate Paul
Enjoyed this vid as gent in 50s taking up camping etc and putting kit together isn't a cheap hobby once learn about gear the cheaper stuff isn't any good and better makes are expensive 😂
Looked at filter things but just noway I'm drinking filthy water with dead animals and poop etc il carry it noway I'm spending a week with coffee butt splatters 😂
I think you would be fine.. just be careful where you take your water from , i always ensure its running water from a stream as opposed to still . Check for animals etc in vicinity. The filters work really well abd ive never had a problem . Best of luck ;-)
