I have a small in ground Xie Shan mandarin. First fruits were not that good but it is a really small tree. Should improve with age.

Thank you for doing an unboxing video and thank you for trusting us for our citrus trees. We love watching the success people are having with their trees in zones that aren't typically thought to be citrus friendly. Cant wait to see the updates in the future. If you have any questions we may be able to help with, please feel free to reach out to us directly. Keep up the good work and happy growing! PS. Even we cant pronounce Shiro.. correctly!

I’m over in Wake County. I have a 2 yr old Satsuma Mandarin. Should I plant outside this Fall? Or keep it in the pot and over winter it in our garage?
@tdhomestead
@tdhomestead Месяц назад
I would probably keep in garage for the winter and wait until spring to plant in ground to give it a little time to establish in ground before having to deal with the colder temps. I still do not have my owari satsuma planted in ground. I did plant a changsha mandarin and a ten degree tangerine which are supposed to be a little more cold hardy than owari satsuma. Depending on how those do I will likely try planting one of my satsumas in griund in the spring.

Most of my tomato plants died despite frequent watering. Heat has been brutal at times, since April 1st! That's unheard of here in Maryland, zone 7. Eggplant and peppers have suffered as well but kale has done well. Tough year for vegetable gardeners.

From Pahrump, Nevada. Same here. Not a good year for tomatoes and peppers. The heat wave was brutal. 11 days of 115 degrees or more. Even with shade cloth on planters.

I dont know where all the white flies are coming from this year. Filling every yellow trap I put out. I bought a 10 inch x 30' Yellow sticky trap and put pieces near the tomatoes before tapping the plants and letting the cloud of flies land on the tape. I'm getting tomatoes, but the plants are clearly not as healthy as they should be.

@tdhomestead
@tdhomestead 2 месяца назад
I think fertilizing may help. How old is the tree and how long have you had it planted? May just need some more time to get established. Growing fruit trees can definitely be a game of patience :)
@KristyW72
@KristyW72 2 месяца назад
Do you do any hand pollination? The reason I ask is I had no bee's this year. My citrus trees were full of flowers and started to have fruit. Then everything dropped off. I'm thinking it had to do with no bee's.
@tdhomestead
@tdhomestead 2 месяца назад
I haven't done any hand pollinating. We have had plenty of bees, mostly carpenter bees. Usually 90% or more of the fruit will drop from my citrus trees and the first time some of them bloomed all of the fruit dropped. Getting on a regular fertilizing schedule seems to help.
@KristyW72
@KristyW72 2 месяца назад
So what are you doing with the cuttings once you get em in the cup?
@tdhomestead
@tdhomestead 2 месяца назад
just keep them watered so the soil doesn't dry out, i will usually put them on a dish or another cup and try to keep them sitting in about a quarter inch of water until they show signs of new growth .. this time of year you will also need to make sure they don't get too much intense direct sunlight. You can build a terrarium/ humidity dome with a clear plastic bag and you won't have to be quite as diligent about checking the moisture but I haven't found it to be necessary;
@JonFTC

Why not using pure perlite as rooting medium?
@tdhomestead
@tdhomestead 2 месяца назад
I am only growing trees as a hobby right now so not too concerned about success rates but I have had good success rooting cuttings in just plain potting soil. I haven't needed to use any special growing medium or make any sort of humidity dome to get citrus cuttings to root. Citrus seems to root fairly easily, I believe I could likely get meyer lemon cuttings to root in top soil from my yard.

@tdhomestead

The way to pick up the snake without him/her freaking out and biting you is to do it gently. So just lean down and gently grab the snake and put it where you want it to go otherwise if you grab it fast and aggressively it will think you are a predator like a hawk or other animal/s like that and will think you are trying to kill it. Just a thought.
@tdhomestead
@tdhomestead 3 месяца назад
I actually only touched the snake with my finger when it turned to strike the first time, he just wasn't in the mood to be picked up. I found him curled up with another in one my egg laying box the next morning. I was able to pick both of them up without them biting and relocated them to a patch of pines on the other side of my yard, only about 200 feet away so they will likely be back but haven't seen them again so far.

I got the Fantastic and Brazos Belle solely based on their cold hardiness. I have an inexpensive greenhouse that I purchased from Amazon that put my plants inside with a small space heater. Since I did not bring them inside the house I didn't need to worry about pests too much. I reinforced the greenhouse with a cattle panel so it is pretty sturdy.
