If you are curious where my nickname Coolhand comes from, it's from the movie Flight of the Intruder. I remember, back in the 1990s and early 2000s, there were many flight sim enthusiasts who had this name (you'll probably guess I look forward to flying Heatblur's A-6 Intruder). Since at one point I was in a squadron called 101e ECV Quebec Air Force, I had added the 101e after my nickname and in most games I became known as Coolhand101e. I like flight sims, but mostly fly DCS, I also play other military type games; my other main game is Escape from Tarkov. You'll see that in the mix of videos in my LIVE section. I also race my Acura RSX (now equipped with a Japanese Type R engine) and my Subaru WRX STi on various lapping days during the summer (for my racing and car stuff, most of it is on Instagram, but I still have old vintage videos in here). What I share here is mostly for fun, but if it can help some of you, it's part the reason this channel exists. ENJOY!

I make many of my videos to show what I do for fun, but some, like this one, can help people trying to figure some of the things that I struggled with when I started. This one in particular I made because I wish someone had done one like it before I tried to figure out how to operate the trim controls.
Yes, once you configure it properly like I illustrated in the video, it works pretty much in the same manner. It is similar to the DCS Apache trim as well.
I saw it in a RU-vid tutorial video and thought the same thing... I went in the editor, and saw that it is an option in the editor for the helicopter that you can add. Basically, it looks like the drop down aiming sight of the Huey. It looks like it is attached to the top of the cockpit rail. If you put it in, it stays there for the duration of the mission. If you are only shooting using the unguided guns and rockets, it is an interesting option (I think you can also put the night vision overlay on top and it makes it look like a real full featured HUD as seen in this video at 13:08: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FjnQ-fX-Uag.html). In many of the "real-life" Kiowa videos I've seen from Afghanistan online, they don't seem to have it installed and I think many used that grease pencil mark instead during operations. That HUD sort of blocks part of the view out of the cockpit.
For the M4, just click on the hot spot on the back of the stock and then press Alt C to get out of cursor mode. I think you also have to open the side door.
Thanks! I'm learning these things as I go. I think it's like that too in the Huey when you want to take the door gunner position. It makes sense because you can't move the cursor and the gun at the same time.
I had to use google to translate to English (I speak French, English and Spanish - and this looked very Italian to me). ANSWER: To determine when the fuel is empty in the underwing or centerline fuel tanks in the F-5E, there is a CAUTION light that turns yellow when the pump no longer pumps fuel (below the RWR, right of acceleration limits gauge). You usually see the internal tank fuel starting to go down as well. Then, you turn off the EXT FUEL and PYLONS switches, get the auto-balance switch to LEFT LOW. At that point, you can jettison the empty tanks if you need to save weight. True, but for the F-4E, the dumb bombs you have to drop many and a hit is uncertain. Walleyes, if they acquire the contrast they need, they won't miss. I'm sure with a bit of training I might get a lock from a bit further. I was also going for fairly small targets. I think these expensive Walleyes were used for high value targets like bridges and factories, which due to their size might be easier to lock.

They are both quite fun to fly in their own way. They both have horrible visibility compared to their more modern counterparts, but they are also legendary cold war rivals, so what's not to love!! 👍

LOL. After looking at the video again, I'd say I was maybe a little fast a my AOA may have been low. When I made this video, I had probably 10-15 landings under my belt, so it'll get better (although I'm always quite happy when nothing breaks on landing). These air force boys are sometimes princesses... if you don't land smoothly like an airliner they complain! 😉
Not silly. No that fragmentration would have wiped anything alive in those tents. But DCS doenst module frag, Also you can use the GARMIN GPS device and put coordinates in, so you can use it in online servers and put coord. of airports for example. I think Im the only 1 who came up with this might need to make a video.
The reason I called it silly is that I used 3 gazillion rockets to be able to cover an area big enough to hit the targets I had assigned myself (not to mention the high potential for collateral damage). It's really an exercise in ballistics. It does achieve one thing: the SU-25 doesn't really get too close to the enemy troops, so less chances of being shot down by pesky MANPADS.
You are right! I may have physically positioned my mic a bit lower than my mouth for that broadcast... I've also noticed that the engine noises are pretty strong in the Phantom. While taxiing with the canopy open, I can barely hear Jester. Thanks for the comment. I'll have to fix that.
I wish the X52 MODE select (which would triple functions for each button) worked or was as easy to program as "Set to mode, program. Set to other mode program..." but it's not. So I never use it and get 1/3rd the buttons. I will get a new stick , throttle and pedals soon anyway.
My previous joystick was the X52, so I understand what you mean. In order to be able to use modes 1, 2 and 3, you have to make a profile with the different 3 options for each aircraft in the program provided by Saitek or Logitech (I've had both versions of the stick). It is more time consuming than making a profile directly in DCS, but then you have your triple functions for the aircraft you built a profile for. If you are just learning the Phantom, when you start is the right time to do that. This way, once you have learned and repeated the functions in their different modes, you'll have built your muscle memory of buttons the first time around (as opposed to if you wait 3 months to make a good profile). P.S. I often used mode 1 for NAV functions, 2 for air-to-air functions, and 3 for air-to-ground. The idea is the keep the same profile logic if possible for each new plane you make a profile for.
I wonder if the F-5 will get a cockpit texture update when it gets added to Flaming Cliffs 2024. Hope so. I might pick up the full-fid version in that case.
Absolutely, the little switch in the left sidewall of the cockpit! Depending on how loaded the F-5 is, setting the proper takeoff trim will also go a long way to make takeoffs easier (5 degrees = light, and 7 degrees heavier loads - there is an indicator top left of the cockpit above the artificial horizon - I take a quick glance at it with the track IR at 21:25 as I'm rolling but it's best to set it beforehand). As you probably noticed, it was not with the F-5 that I had difficulty taking off. 😆 (I hadn't flown the Mirage 2000 in a few months 🤦♂ - I'll need to review my takeoff procedures for that one)
It's nice to see that when you look at the power lines from underneath, they don't disappear into the clouds like on some other maps. That was a bug that appeared with the new clouds a few years back.
Thanks for the preview. Ya, I noticed the different lake elevations too. I remember ED saying that one thing that was inhibiting them from making a Vietnam map was the inability to place water bodies (ie. rice patties) at different elevations. Looks like that hurdle might have been overcome. But maybe it already exists in other maps. Perhaps South Atlantic.
I find that surprising when the oldest map, Caucasus has a huge dam with water at the top, and water at the bottom. Regarding Vietnam, I remember when the Marianas came out, with my older computer, it was difficult to render all those palm trees... and it is just small islands. My guess would have been that a huge country with jungle everywhere would possibly make even today's machines come to a crawl in terms of frame rates. In any case, I'm happy to say my RTX 3080ti doesn't seem to have issues with the Kola map and that certainly means they are optimizing the platform.

Yep, In modern jets, I hit the "admiral's doorbell" (the giant yellow emergency jettison button) when I want to get rid of the load if I'm in unlimited mode. I didn't see one of those so I guess it's one of those cases where I should RTFM... 😅

Hello, Here are the steps to follow to get going in DCS. I feel like warning anyone who is interested in flying in this simulation that it aims to reproduce the real thing, so it is not the easiest thing to do. However, if you understand this and want full fidelity, you may have found the right simulation for you. At the minimum, I would recommend a joystick with a twist axis (to simulate rudders) to be able to control planes and/or helicopters well. It is pretty much a necessity for WWII planes like the Bf 109 K-4 that I tested in this video. Once you have that, go to this website to download the simulation: www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/world/ Once your installation is complete, I would suggest that you try one of the free modules like the SU-25T Frogfoot (modern ground attack jet) or TF-51D (WWII era training version of the famous P-51 Mustang). This will give you a decent feel for how the simulation works. They can be configured to use the joystick axes and most other commands are done through the keyboard. If you are interested in the Bf 109 K-4 that I flew in this video, you need to download the payable module (there is a 50% sale going on now, so it is a good time to buy it). Now this is a "full fidelity module", which means that just like in the real aircraft, all cockpit buttons, switches can be activated through your computer mouse or keyboard/joystick buttons that you will have set up. It also means that it simulates real-world physics just like the forces that would affect a real plane. In my Bf 109 videos, you may notice that the plane seems to want to roll and turn on its own on takeoff. Despite the fact that I use rudder pedals and separate joystick and throttle controls, it is a challenge, and I have many years of experience on simulators. I would highly suggest reading the manual, watching some RU-vid videos to help get yourself set up, and then there is nothing like practice to make you understand how these planes work. It requires effort, but it is very rewarding to know that once mastered, you could quite possibly be able to fly these real historical aircraft!!

@@lepaul26The Simulation comes with missions. For most modules, including the free ones, you have training missions and single player missions. For campaigns, they are working on a dynamic campaign that will be available some time in the future (???). For now, the campaigns that are available have to be purchased, and they are usually a series of professionally done well-scripted missions. DCS also comes with a very powerful mission editor. Most of the missions you see me fly on my channel, I built myself. There is also a section of Eagle Dynamics' web site where you can download user made files. These include skins for aircraft, single and multiplayer missions, and these are free.
Great video! Looks like you found the sight selector to help you aim! I forgot to mention the in the other video that there is an auto hover button and it works pretty well. You just have to be within perimeters to activate it. I think it’s like + or - 3 ft per sec in vertical movement & no more than 18 mph forwards. Not 100% on those numbers so just check the manual. Also there’s a slave to sight autopilot that keeps the Gazelle lined up with the target sight. It’s great to use if your hovering to shoot. Personally I like to shoot while on the move. I just seem to find it makes life a little easier when in the left seat. If you ever want to do a coop mission or side by side, give me a holler and we can try and link up. I think that would be a lot of fun and make an interesting video. Anyway, nice video!🤙
I remember that when I flew the Gazelle about 2 years ago, there was something to help with the autohover that we could bring up in the artificial horizon display. I haven't really gotten that far into it yet, but I'm sure if I check a pages in the manual I'll be able to refresh quickly. It's still a fun lil' beast to fly low and fast.
Cool video. Hey if you press the selectors with on the control panel for the sight you can change the actual sight to one that gas a small cross etc to make aiming and staying on target much easier. Also I find that if you keep your forward momentum going it’s a little easier to fire and hit targets while you on the move. Makes you a more difficult target to hit and you don’t have to keep struggling to maintain a hover while your heads in the sight. I posted a couple of videos on my channel that show this being done if you want to take a look. Just a couple of things I thought would help a little bit. This is a really fun module and a blast to fly, especially in VR! Anyway, nice video!🤙

Thanks for the "constructive" criticism. 🙄 There are some planes I've learned through reading the manual for hours, but sometimes, I feel that since this is a simulation and NOT real life, there's nothing like actually trying to fly the plane and have fun while learning. First, let's just quickly mention that the quality we see in these "LIVE BROADCAST" videos is pretty much limited to what I can upload to RU-vid and therefore represent about 1/3 of the image quality I see in game (I play in 2560x1440 but I broadcast in 1920x1080 - and then I think RU-vid uses its own video size shrinking algorythms). To answer the question though, I went to check in game to be sure to give you the exact info. Since I use DLSS upscaling, anti-aliasing options are greyed out, but it says DLAA. As far as the DLSS perf/quality option is concerned, it set to quality, and the sharpening slider is all the way to 1. I have an NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti vid card.

Hey there Cooolhand101e, seems like you're missing part of the periscope symbology for some reason making it very hard to aim. You should see a targeting cross. Do you have the English cockpit mod installed by any chance? Or some other mod that might be interfering? Looking forward to more videos!
Hey! It's nice to see Polychopofficial are interested in my modest videos. For the targeting cross, blame it on user error. I don't have any mods installed, but I hadn't mapped the "SA342 Viviane mode selector increase/decrease periscope symbology" control which allows us to switch between crosshairs symbols. Maybe as a suggestion, having one by default could be a good idea. 😉 I still have a few things to learn on this updated Gazelle. Mapping the axes on my MFG crosswind + Winwing Orion2 HOTAS combo was quite a challenge just to make the helicopter flyable again, but It's flying in a fairly stable manner now (I have the shaker kit on my F-16 stick and the extra trigger to the front which works as an axis seemed to make the helicopter wobble at first and my toe brakes also had a weird axis assigned to them - I think I've either removed the assigned functions or reassigned these to functions that won't make it seem like I'm getting inputs from nowhere as I fly).
As I mentionned around the 2 minute point in the video, I had a few weird things happening with controls. If it can help, on my MFG rudders, I mapped the axis of the 2 brakes on the radio volume so that they don't act up. I still have a secondary trigger with an axis on my winwing joystick that makes the heli wobble, but since I don't use it, well, it leaves me alone! 😅
@@Coolhand101eI'll do you one better. They've added a set of "SA342 Co-pilot" bindings. There is where you will find all the errant axis bindings that are causing trouble.
@@wabbit234I saw those when I set the axes for the Viviane sight. I'll have to look into them more closely. I did remove some that seemed useless, but didn't think to check if my secondary trigger axis was one of those mapped. Thanks for the heads up!!
This is cool. I'm intoo ww2, got all dcs ww2 planes and also play Il-2 great battles. I'm french and bought the mirage on sale like 2 years ago but never went around learning it because modern jets are so intimidating to me, all those weapon system, radars, navigation etc... maybe one day! Nice mission, well done! edit: I wrote the comment after the bridge bombing, I have to reprimend you though for shooting down a mirage! He was maybe just trying to share with you some red wine with with a bit of camembert on a slice of baguette and you sent a fox 3 before you could tell! I'm desapointed... ;)
My AWACS told me it was flying for the RED SIDE. That is why I shot the Mirage F1 down... 😋 Usually, I am the one flying in the Mirage planes. 😉 P.S. @@matydrum Si tu aimes les Mirages, le Mirage 2000 C est plus facile selon moi pour commencer. Les systèmes de cette version sont plus modernes, et donc un peu plus simples à opérer pour le pilote. Le HUD pourra t'aider à frapper tes cibles au sol, pourra de donner tes indications de navigation (en plus de suivre les waypoint sur l'écran radar), et aide beaucoup pour le air-air. Le F1, c'est plus analogue, des cadrans, navigation INS (sur la version EE - sinon plutôt archaique sur le CE) avec une rose des vents pour indiquer la direction à prendre, et le radar est une antiquité. Le air-sol en Mirage F1 se fait avec des calculs mathématiques à préparer avant la mission, tandis qu'avec le Mirage 2000 C, le radar et l'ordinateur de bord peuvent faire ces calculs en temps réel pour une cible non-prévue initialement.
I'm usually not a great fan of MODs since everytime there is a patch they either break something or need to be updated. However, after going on the forums to read about this one, I can see its usefulness. I usually do very short flights with my warbirds so I'm not sure I'll need it. Heck, right now this one is still on "trial". The sale makes it interesting as a potential purchase though. Thanks for the comment. If it's the only module you fly, it must be worth exploring.
