Excellent video my friend. Great quote, great movie and music references, and great sentiments overall. Happy Birthday my friend, I hope this is large step towards those elusive desires 🎂
thank you for the kind words, my friend! means a lot. happiness is in the pursuit, right? I have to remind myself of that sometimes. that's where this video comes from. appreciate you stopping by, sir!
EJ's back (on RU-vid)! Glad to see you flexing these muscles again. Love a good 'getting thoughts down on the page' video - you're speaking to things that are personal, yet universal here. Love the use of art/clips that inspire you, I felt that EJ voice come through. If this video is to serve the purpose of you looking back at it at a different stage of life (which I think all content/artistic creation is good for this purpose), I hope you make it a yearly thing. Like Billie Eilish: Sam Interview, One Year Apart. Although use this momentum and start posting more than once a year. Make it a regular thing. Oh yeah, and happy birthday!
yep, this def was a 'getting thoughts down on the page' type of vid. and i'll try my best to keep this output going! I won't make promises of how often they'll be, but the amount of time it took me to write, then shoot, then edit, really wasn't so long. I gave myself the deadline of 'post by birthday,' but why not incentivize myself to have more output? it made me feel good getting it out there (but also a little embarrassed, in a way), but it was good/important for me to do. at the very least for me. a yearly thing? maybe? maybe every five years. something about the way I made this is I don't want it to sound too similar each year, lol. appreciate all the thoughts, sir! speaking of someone who needs to release something soon...
Your most personal vid yet! Feels like we could spend hours dissecting the ideas you vocalized here. I think my favorite is the thought of an older-you watching this back…like you’re giving your future self a sort of gift. An appropriate birthday tradition, imo. Love the media references, love the honesty and personality. I hope you post more like this EJ. Same time next week? 🎈
yeah, this existing and me watching it back, sometimes it feels like pride, but also sometimes it feels like an out-of-body experience. it's a time capsule memorialized in video form. yes, we can probably spend hours talking about this (and will at some point, maybe not in one sitting) but such is the plight of the writer. it's in the contemplation that we can discover some pearls of wisdom that we can eventually communicate to others
Fitting that you say that, katy kirby also opened for alex g in brooklyn the week before! I was at that show, lol (won free tix). But sadurn is 🔥 one of the best working bands today
@@kurtttttttt there’s an app called “Loudie” that I use - it sends push notifs and you hit “claim”: you find out instantly if you win or not. Only for NYC and LA, though
@@ejparas8492 cool, thanks for sharing I’ll check it out. I saw Katy Kirby twice in DC. Saw Alex G in Baltimore and now Philly. So happy he played Sportstar on the 19th
@@kurtttttttt that’s rad! Parallel lives, somewhat. I’ve seen katy Kirby a couple times in NYC (opened for fenne lily / illuminati hotties) and then double Alex g this past tour (Philly / Brooklyn)

My favorite thing about a cover by Phoebe is she always understands what really hits about the original and makes sure to nail it. In this one it was the out note on the lyric "suuuuurgery" where I really knew I was in for a good one.
This review was awesome EJ!!! There was a lot of information to unpack when discussing this movie, you did a great job walking us through the major points. And editing was on point man, love the little details you added as well, like your personal screenplay transition. Like 20 minutes into Mank, I was convinced I was really not going to like it, I felt like there was a flurry of information being thrown at the audience, couldn't really get my bearings. But then, by the end, I was surprisingly really invested. Felt much less like a movie about the making of Citizen Kane, and much more a movie about self-serving power structures, which I definitely wasn't expecting but enjoyed. I did find it interesting, though, that use of film to irresponsibly change public sentiment is brought up, and yet Mank seems to favor a mostly contested, pro-Mankiewicz view of the screenwriting credits for Kane. I only know what I read from Wikipedia, certainly not an expert, but it did seem to clash with prevailing scholarly opinion, and potentially the message of the film. Again great review, looking forward to watching more!
biaggio! thanks for the extremely thought-out comment. I really appreciate it! ha, I'm certainly not an expert, either -- some basic secondary resources that any kid in film school year 1 would use, lol. still, I love learning new things, and when I saw mank a little early, figured why not make a video (might do a nomadland one next? not sure. at the very least, might do a top 10 of 2020 before the oscars). "self-serving power structures," that was definitely what I picked up from my initial viewing of mank. and like what I said in the vid, this parallelism with what's happened in recent history made this movie pack all that more of a punch (at least to me). this review came a few days after watching mank initially. admittedly, once I walked out of the theater, I felt very much particularly unmoved. it took a few days of the movie to sit with me to gain a better appreciation of it. I still applaud fincher regardless. happy awards season, biagg!
tbh, I just really wanted it on my local files on spotify, but didn't want to have 20-30 seconds of that insanely loud BBC intro and outro lol. so then figure why not share with the internet.
This is a GREAT video! I think my expectations are tempered enough so that I know what I'm getting into, but I'm still beyond hyped for this. Super informative video, and a great crash course into Citizen Kane and the historical context surrounding it. I might end up rewatching Citizen Kane before this one hits Netflix...
TheCookFilms with your breadth of knowledge of movies, who knows, you might take more out of your initial viewing than me! I hope you enjoy it (I think you will). And honestly, as each day passes, the movie lingers in my head like a parasite. Mank is still there. It was a powerful movie, and a part of me doesn’t think I conveyed that - but the thoughts in my vid were my initial thoughts.
Would love to know what you think of Mank if/when you get around to it! Like it? Love it? Hate it? What's your take on Citizen Kane? Thanks for watching this vid, too, btw :)
Aye good to see your back with another great vid EJ! Loved all the info, sounds like you were lucky to get early access to Mank. Based on your take, I almost feel like this film will get far more attention during Oscar season opposed to its upcoming Netflix release. I’ll definitely be getting to it on my own though-have to respect when an artist like Fincher opts for a long time passion project.
Appreciate the words, Pete! Props to the Rutgers University Cinema for running an awesome little theater -- I felt very safe inside. It's a long Oscar season coming up, at the very least, I think some people would check it out based on Fincher + buzz alone. Crossover audiences? Not sure.
It really is such a powerful thing how the ideas that live within us can not only flow out of us and culminate in something as beautiful as film, but also that those ideas can result in such a staggering, life-altering impact on others. How those ideas live inside everyone, even someone as unassuming as Damien Chazelle. Great video!
Love the Damian Chazelle story EJ. It’s easy to forget that there’s real (and normal) people behind our favorite films. All it really takes is an idea...would love to see more vids of this flavor in the future!
Would love to know what you guys think of this cover! The doubled voices I do at the end was a happy mistake, but wonder how that sounded for you all. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!
