I love to explore places that are off the beaten path! This channel is filled with small towns and obscure places that few people visit. I enjoy learning about their history and telling the stories. I don't claim to be a history expert - more of a fan of the places I go!
My goal is to upload a new video every Thursday and Sunday at 7am Central. Subscribe to the channel, hit the notification bell, blah blah blah, and you'll know when a new video is available! Thanks for the support!
Went to Piedmont today (June 15th, 2024, after watching this video. The what seemed unoccupied building shown at 14:02 in the video is (today?. how long?) a restaurant, Jim and Lila's Cafe which also sells a few groceries. Isn't open on Sundays, of course. The fried chicken dinner was well worth the trip Best green beans and mashed potatoes side dishes I have had in a long, long time.. Partner in crime ate a cheeseburger with fries. Cheeseburger was huge and the fries freshly cooked from scratch, not frozen fries. Highly recommend the place.
It’s a shame that the museum was closed. It’s one of the most interesting museums I’ve been to. From dinosaurs to farming history, folk art and an impressive automobile collection. Great video though really enjoyed it.
Relative to Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, I realize that I’m pping into the wind, but as a central Florida native and having graduated from high school the year after Disney World opened so that I clearly know what it was like before and after, I’d be oh so happy if Disney World had never existed. It destroyed the scenic beauty that was the Orlando area of central Florida; due to the influx of Puerto Rican employees it caused, it destroyed the political balance of central Florida; and all the tourists it has brought have made a hellhole out of MCO. I would happily give up all the taxes and jobs created by it for Disney to get the hell back to California where it belongs.
Did not expect to see hometown content in my recommended 😭 Used to go town west all the damn time and it was just as popular as town east I really don't know what happened, really wish they'd close down and do a grand reopening or something because everyone knows town west is still open and there but know its dead so no one goes there, so sad to see one of my favorite places as a kid so hollow and a shell of what it used to be
Being a native Florida cracker and having lived everywhere from Tallahassee to Coconut Grove in Miami, as well as multiple places in between, I know how far apart all these places are especially if you don’t have a private helicopter or airplane - actually an airplane wouldn’t do much good for some of these places - you would need a helicopter. And in all of these videos you’ve had the same damn green shirt on. So either you have 100 of those shirts or you are badly in need of a bath. I certainly don’t care, but for appearances’ sake in the future, you might want to wear different shirts in different parts of your video.
I now live in a small town called Opp alabama. This was the main thourough back before the interstate bypass to florida. My neighbors sister lives in Luverme. We have a lot of little towns near us Kinston, Evergreen, Conecuh, Onycha (O ny ka), Florala. I love it here....well except the heat and humidity is crazy....and i thought georgia was bad 😂😂😂😂😂
The weather: Tough? Kansas is fine. Weak? Just don't. In my travel around the country, people would ask me in my 20s, 'what's it like'? Ans: I have as many swimsuits and shorts as a guy from Florida, and have as many jackets and coats as someone who lives in Minnesota. You will spend money on practical things while living here. Or move out, which is fine.
Neat backroad driving in the countryside. Very pretty area. Cemetery where old headstones were neatly placed next to tree. Someone was very thoughtful. Lots of interesting history surround this area .
Great video. There's always a part of me that sees these small towns struggling to survive that wishes I could open a business there that brought jobs and money to invest back into community. I really hope the rise of remote work saves at least some of these towns.
Redo = house libraries, recreational facilities, healthcare clinics, job training centers, and social support services. Recreational spaces generates interest and foot traffic. Escape rooms, theaters, video arcades, roller rinks, haunted houses and children's play areas are just a few possibilities. Transforming empty retail centers done with good minds who SEE Well. Add a few boutique type shops - selling candles, perfumes, trendy clothing, shoes, jewelry, hunting and fishing, sporting shops....etc.etc... Or a dog and cat store supply with bathing the pets - minimal charge or Free.
I've lived in this area all my life, most of these small towns didn't get abandoned until BFGoodrich tire manufacturer moved away from Miami, Ok in the 1980's
Been to Boise City many times and I love it out there. In fact me and my grandpa just drove to every county seat in Oklahoma and alternated running a mile in each. I was fortunate to run in Boise City and it’s a neat little town.
Damm this sucks. I remember getting excited to hit the mall as a kid or teen . The food court, video game arcade, the collection store where I brought GI Joes and movie theater. It’s still hanging in there but not sure how long
@@TravelwithaWiseguy lot got destroyed since your video. My name is marion polk. Ever back I'll be glad to show you what's left of the old ways. My great grandfather Charlie polks house still stands. Just different owners
We had three malls where I live (a city of roughly 300k) Two have closed but one is still full and always packed (thankfully) The two that closed have become call centers and stuff like that so the building can be used and not fall into disrepair. Something both sad and magical about the mall the way it is. Empty quite and has a vibe of it own
I lived in the Joplin area (Saginaw and Neosho) for 32 years. Went out to find the Spooklight back in the early 90s when I was in college with college friends. We saw it floating in a field. It seemed to follow us along the road. Definitely creepy! Highway 43 area holds many great memories for me. Another great drive is Joplin South main through Redings Mill and NN Highway. So much history through there. The butterflies you see at Joplin entrances represent the "butterfly people" that many survivors of the 2011 EF5 Joplin tornado reported seeing during the storm rescuing/helping, especially children. There's a book written about the phenomenon. ❤ Just Google 'butterfly people Joplin' and you'll find a lot. ❤ Thank you for this great video!
I spent many a day in this mall as a kid, there was an Arcade with video games such as Killer Instinct and Mortal Kombat. My wife and I would have date night there in the late 90's.
We don't cotton to democrats anymore. The KKK is entirely a Democrat appendage, and has never been other. Unfortunately, there are still democrats in the south, but we're addressing it.
So, we're just going to ignore Coeurd'Alene Idaho? I live in Arkansas, and my town of about 600 has zero racists that I know of. Batesville, still sporting a CSA monument, is also really short on racists. Even the folks that fly the Stars and Bars don't profess to hate anyone, and you can see it at their cookouts. Fully integrated. Southern Racism is a myth anymore.
Back in the early 90s to 2000s this place was still thriving in Hutchison but nowadays it's a ghost of its former self. All of the main anchor stores went out of business well over a decade ago and have been converted while walking through the main entrance the food court is gone and most of the side businesses have been shuttered for just as long with only About 6 open for certain businesses the biggest being a fitness like center converted from the old GAP clothing store. But probably the creepiest thing is the old mall music that plays from the speakers gives this place a real apocalyptic urbex feeling.
Very disappointing drive in from Goddard, just to hit the mall. Now I gotta go all the way across town to Towne East, or go up North to New Market Square. Still not quite as dead as the Hutch mall looks in your video there.
I think internet sales are what has killed these malls. It is surprising how starkly different Towne East and Towne West are in Wichita, since they both started out as much the same kind of malls.
