There is an An-2 parked on the forecourt of Antonov Design Bureau in western Kyiv. It used to be visible from the Kyiv-Zhytomyr highway, but I did not see it last time I travelled. Oleg Antonov, with his team of designers, was a prolific designer of new aircraft, a trend which continues unabated after his passing. As a passing note, Zhytomyr is the home town of Sergei Korolyev, the unrivalled leader of the Soviet space race. The Korolyev Space Museum is located in Zhytomyr and is well worth a visit.

Well, here are the facts: After the war Antonov requested Yakovlev to let him work independently, heading Yakovlev’s subsidiary design office at the aircraft manufacturing factory at Novosibirsk. On 31 May 1946, Antonov was appointed head of the newly redesignated facility known as the Antonov Aircraft design bureau, later moved to Kiev, Ukraine. In September 1946, Antonov, in addition to his management of the design bureau, became the Director of the Siberian R and D Institute for Aeronautics.

Well, in the fact, this plain has an Automatic leading edge slats, which opens automatically at 45 knots, and the plain doesn't stall, but goes down like a parachute with a vertical speed about 3m/sec. It has the strongest landing gears ever built in a plain, and will land safely every where, even on top of trees.

Well, first time since I settled in US in 1994 my soul has been touched so deep....with this video. I'm born in 1947 and my first fly with great plain was in 1967...on a plain built in 1947. Those numbers will be forever in my mind. Anyway, good for you that you have this example and you did a wonderful job. Congratulations!

Nikolay Kolev I want one of these on amphibious floats. I'd want the interior fitted out to comfortably (on the ground, at least) sleep three people, with room for stowing hunting and fishing gear, including cooking. I doubt it would tax the abilities of the aircraft.

yah, An-2 was developed in the Antonov design bureau (OKB-153) in Novosibirsk (Siberia) in 1946. Only in 1952 Antonov moved to Ukraine

The start is an electric, inertial starter motor. Air brakes and tail wheel lock.
@jimmiller8166
@jimmiller8166 6 лет назад
Yes, I flew one in Germany and it is such a bad ass little Russian plane, very responsive and easy to fly. (The BE-200 was also built in Irkutsk Siberia but, the plant was moved to a most modern Facility in Taganrog, Russia.) Other Soviet block countries also built AN_2 airplanes is NOT just Ukrainian as Bruce Blake states

@dragonxxx53 It's electric. An electric motor turns a flywheel, then this flywheel is engaged to the engine and it starts.
@dragonxxx53
@dragonxxx53 12 лет назад
What type of starter does this aircraft use? Air? Electric?
@jimmiller8166
@jimmiller8166 6 лет назад
Starter is Electric but, it has its own air compressor as it uses air pressure for the brakes and adjust shock/struts and tires air pressure; also has an internal fuel pump to take fuel from 55 Gals. drums commonly found in remote air fields, it is quite a versatile Russian plane.
@Prestomeco202
@Prestomeco202 6 лет назад
The AN-2 I flew in used an electric-inertia starter. Rather than use a heavy starter powerful enough to turn over that huge engine, it uses a smaller motor to spin up a heavy flywheel over a period of 30-60 seconds. Once the flywheel is at the necessary speed, you turn off the motor and engage a clutch that connects the flywheel to the motor. The system seemed a little bit odd at first but works well. I am not certain if this is the way all N-2s are started. I don't have time to provide details today but starting that aircraft is really a team sport, best done with 3 people.
