i have had an ASD since i was born. it was corrected with open heart surgery when i was 4 years old. the thing is now that i have 7 steel wires in my sternum (as it was an open heart procedure and the rib cage bones were cut from the sternum). the rib cage bones were to be re-attached to the sternum and so the steel wires were used to hold the bones in place. i am now 25 years old and doing fine, and btw, i am a smoker.

I have an asd that is being closed via robotic surgery monday july 9 2012. beware of the adult size TEE, as mine couldn't see the whole thing, and caused me moderate throat pain for days, and caused me to undergo unnecessary cath surgery that couldn't fix my 3.5 cm hole at 45 years of age. during the cath surgery, however, they used a "child size" TEE, and no problems, and could see all clearly. why aren't they ALL using child size?

I'm an Adult that had my Starflex device put in to close my ASD in 1999. I gave birth in 2007. Sometimes I still have palpitations, but it's better than a stroke...

@kawaiiushii Of course not! Unless the stitching was horribly, horribly crude then no. If you are feeling like anything is wrong, you should visit your cardiologist or doctor.

@maydagdag1 Catherization is the easiest procedure to go through. You are in and out of the hospital the same day, two days tops. You may have to go to a cardiologist every year or so just to make sure that everything stays in tip top shape. You are very lucky to have this option. I had to go in for open heart surgery at the age of 4, so this is an oppurtunity I wouldn't pass by, especially for your health in mind! Hope I can help :)

I was born with ASD. Luckily, It was diagnosed pretty early. I had my surgery when I was a year old, my grandpa still tells me how they did it. I used to be embaressed, but I'm not anymore, becaus eI know it makes me unique.

I was born with an ASD and they didn't perform surgery on me until I was 7 years old. This was back when they opened your chest instead of this new efficient way you see in the video. I wouldn't take it back though, Dr. Leonard L. Bailey did a beautiful job, and its a scar I carry proudly.

can an ASD happen again ? ....i mean i had my ASD " or my VSD "repaired "not sure which one i had" , is there a possibility that the hole can open again ?

@MrGeyzer You need to get an associate's degree (usually take 3 years with general education courses) and pass a national exam to practice (except in CO). I suggest checking out info on this career at the Bureau of Labor Statistics at bls.gov and search physical therapist assistant.

i have a bad habit of biting my lips. Literaly sometimes i am just siting sumwhere and i start biting at the skin of by lips till it peels a piece of it off. then once that hapens it feels really anoying when i can feel the gap of mising skin on the lip so i keep peeling it off. i know this canot be a good thing. it only bleeds when i peel off a big piece. can this lead to lip cancer or anything. i always try and stop myself when doing it but its just something i do subconsciouslyTHANKS!
