I had this issue in my Model Y, 29K mi., just shot some grease in the joint and worked it around (I didn't need to take off tire), from another video, and after driving for about an hour it went silent again.
Just fixed a 2021 Tesla Y Same exact problem. First I used a small needle and shot in some chassis grease. Seemed better while on the rack turning the wheels. Soon as weight was put on it the sound came back. I found this video. Separated the upper ball joint from the Knuckle and rotated the joint full extension 360 degrees working the lube in. Did that for a few minutes and you could feel the joint smoothing out. Put it back together set the car down and perfect not a sound. Thank you for this simple fix.
For others, use a C clamp to pull the control arm back down so it's easy to take the bolt (the one he said he destroyed) out. Then add grease and wiggle it around. Mine was super stiff and squeaked like someone was bending sheet metal back and forth.
You can ADD grease. There are tools to grease those. Doing all that work just to wiggle it a bit and temporarily fix the squeaking..... Just use the right grease gun tip, and do it right. (and no, I am not talking about a ZERK fitting).
Yes, because the fitting itself introduces an opportunity for dirt and debris to find its way in. Cheaper to manufacture, too. In the end, initial, maintenance, and repair costs combined are way cheaper.
@stybur19 the steel ball joint looked plastic? Have you heard of one breaking? Me neither. Needing grease yes, but holding 400hp without issue for hundreds of thousands of miles.
@andrewahern3730 Its only saves the manufacturer money, not the end user. Just ask all the model 3 owners who have had to replace their Upper control arm with less than 100k miles on the car.
I've slipped a 16g needle on a grease filled syringe between the rubber boot and the ball joint taper to lube tight and squeaky ball joints.Works for a while, but they squeak because water has worked its way in. The real cure is replacement.@@EngineeringExplainedExtra
@@EngineeringExplainedExtra so is it still silent, or have the squeaking come back? The permanent fix is to re-grease it, but this will give som extra time. (Which is needed thinking of Teslas waiting time for fixing stuff)
@@EngineeringExplainedExtrayou should’ve just did the test in better conditions. Not upload this half assed video. Hopefully you arent the same person you were 8 yrs ago
Yes. Canned sound effects. If you want the sound of motor performance, the i8 isnt a great option. It IS very attractive, but at that price there are a dozen better options. I am standing pat with my 2016 M6, tuned to 738 hp. with only 22k miles its got years of terrific fun left to be had, and real motor sounds!
@@noone-t8y I actually think it is comical. I really like this car, I am ok with no sound. Its part of the mystique. I have the i3, and I love blowing people's minds when it takes off with no noise. :D
