The Shed Project is a special interest channel - I do stuff in my shed, Vintage tool restorations, particularly planes & other woodworking bits, always lots of projects in the pipeline. I try and do 2-3 videos a month if I can
Thanks. What is the name and type of your bench grinder ? Would a thick 1/8 inch blade better in a Stanley no.4 ? Did your plane hog off wood fast ? I need to flatten a 14 inch log cut in half down its length.
I have a similar flexco lamp that I inherited from my grandfather, but with a stand-alone base rather than clamping. The black power switch is physically broken (But the mechanism inside works). Ballasts are working but noisy, and I would like to rewire it. Any idea where I might get a fix for the little black button?
Ive been living in dunmow since 2018, love the history. I explored the Eastern Lodge gatehouse and tried finding building remains but i guess that what is where src quarry is now. Do you happen to a company called "fred button & sons"? in my last video I show what I found in eastern Lodge behind the gatehouse and it looks like an old trailer with faded writing that looks like fred button & son.

Thanks for showing, looks tedious and you said it-new saws are hardened and throw away. Ive had some luck honing a silky blade a few times with a cut off wheel in a dremel. I couldnt bend a tooth
Doobrey, band , wheel,?? are these technical terms or do they simplify matters? It is important to at least refer to the parts that you are dealing with their correct names, otherwise these types of video are meaningless!.
I have the almost identical lamp. The switch and the two ballasts look identical. I think its a bad switch no continuity it seems. The ballasts have no continuity either which i think means they are still ok.
nice job restoration. good idea to not paint the japaning. I liked the sound of the cutting the plane did....Oh.. do not change anything about the video it is find...
Thankyou. My home isn't especially old. 1960s. But it has indoor gas pipes etc. I was thinking about putting a cupboard over mine. Good to get as many ideas as possible prior to committing to the work. Thanks for the video
Thanks Stephen, good to see you back, and a Happy New year to you too ! Not something I'm ever likely to do, but interesting to see you work through the issue, what we do for our kids eh !? Of course he didn't just buy a Fiesta, he's your Son and your Dad's Grandson, why make it easy ! 😉
I always associate Stefan Grossman with Death Comes Creeping but is it you playing on the video? Good repair job mate but very glad to hear you mention axle stands at the end there. Thanks for that - hope you didn't get any storm damage.
Thanks for this. I have a NAD 6325 (even older than the 602) and the belt failed a long time ago. I'm pretty sure the transport mechanism is identical. I'll have to see if the counter band it still intact but I know the capstan band is toast. These were a good unit in their day, with the tape transport reportedly made by Nakamichi. I was going to sell it-as but I have quite few tapes so I think I might keep it for laughs.
@@TheShedProjectUK I don’t know what I will do with mine yet. As it was, I could only have got about AU $40 (£20) for it so I thought it probably wasn’t worth the effort. It seemed like it might be worth resurrecting but I’m not sure how good or bad my tapes are yet.
Great to see you back Stephen, and kudos to you for recording a mid Christmas plumbing repair, glad it all worked out OK for you, thanks for sharing your experience ! We drove past the Gateway to Easton Lodge recently and I was explaining to my wife about your Dad, she was most interested as she had ancestors from Church End !
@@TheShedProjectUK It was and the belt replacement was successful. Thanks! Getting that one piece aligned correctly was tricky. The thing I couldn’t figure out however is how to adjust the speed of the motor. Theres a little hole for it but I can’t find anything in there to adjust
You really need a skiving as opposed to leather for this job. Essex Galleries in the UK will do a variety of colours and will also emboss to your specifications. Note that some writing slopes had a surface of blue velvet. A rubber roller is useful to ensure the leather is evenly glued down. Traditionally wallpaper paste would have been the glue to use, this is good because it's forgiving. When cutting the leather with a craft knife, try to be perpendicular to the surface. as the underneath of the leather is lighter than the surface, however a dark wax stick will infill any mistakes. I agree with the comment below about French polishing. If you need to replace the cloth underneath the box to stop it scratching then a piece of linen would have been used.
Disappointing! You gave a lot of exposure to your rust removal but nothing on the sharpening of the iron. The plane will work with a bit of rust but it will not work without a sharp blade. Your title states "Restore" but I must of missed the restoral of the cutting edge. Sorry. No like and not subbung!
Like the fact that it is so simple and yet does the job. Lot of times we complicate sharpening. I am planning to build one and would probably take the idea from here. My main thing is to keep it high enough for me to be able to stand and sharpen. So, I am thinking I will put in some large diameter screws and bolts to tighten the saw between the two plywood pieces since the vise jaws may not be enough if the jig sits too tall
What a gent you are. I like oldy woldy video your in a small shed turning a lovely plane from a dirty rusty piece of metal to an absolutely gem of a tool. There is nothing better more satisfying than using it for the first time after restoration. Good vid thumbs up and keep going. Have subbed to your channel.
Before building him up i would first make a heavy board for it with heavy wheels (casters) so you can move that thing. At the place where it standing now you will have no space to feed longer boards through it , just my 2 cents mate. Good luck with it. 😉😉👍👍
If you ever have a damaged 9v battery connector in any device, use pliers to peel the metal case off a dead 9v battery and cannibalize the battery's terminal board. You can solder directly to the back side of the terminal board. Remember to make your connections in reverse from how the polarity is labeled on a 9v battery. When making your solder connections, the positive wire goes to the large terminal and negative wire goes to the small terminal. It's free and it's dead easy!
That looks excellent now Steven, how nice to be able to repair a family heirloom, and make it a focal point for future family gatherings, I'm sure your Dad would be pleased that you made the effort, it has been a lot of work but worth it in the end !
Traditionally the 'Writing slope' would have been 'Frenched polished' but the wax finish does suffice... Not the easiest project, to do, but a very nice result. The leather finish is a real addition as well.
