when I was young I got caught short on the 14c bus and had to do a poo in the local paper and hid it behind a chair on the top deck at the back. The next day I went to get on the bus and the conductor told me I was banned because I did a poo on the bus the night before. I asked him how he knew and he said " It was in The Echo this morning".. ..boom boom\\i'm here all week.
I grew up in Elmswood Road - in fact, my parents were the second owners of our house and it only went out of the family in 2019. From childhood, I just recall the shops in Victoria Road before the Aigburth Arms was built, but my brother and sister (both older) remember these more clearly than me. The couple who used to live in the big house on the corner of Victoria owned the little corner shop at the bottom of Woodland Road by the way. I could go on, and on, and on.... but won't 🙂
Photo '@2.13 to 2.17 is Hanover Street looking toward city centre. Photo @ 4,31 is Moorfields looking toward Exchange Station now and office complex that retains the original frontage of the former railway station. I worked in Liverpool City centre mid 60s to early 1970s when Hanover Street had many small business's I often passed daily. And with work colleagues often had a Friday pint in the Empire Pub , often called Tracey's after the then manager, and ate at the marvellous Golden Phoenix Chinese above the shops in the next block. You could enter the second floor car park using the same stairway that also had the front entrance to the restaurant. All, in my opinion sadly lost for the Liverpool One project.
Great photos. Second picture my favourite. I lived at No. 145 Alder Road from 1976 to 2001. It certainly looked a lot different back in 1958… and even more different from 2001 as it looks today.
Have you got any idea where I might find old pics of a specific part of Liverpool..?? L7 mainly. The old Chatsworth Street school & the surrounding streets & also just off Edge Lane, the old Plessey's factory & one of the streets next to it, Wenham Street... I wanna put summat together for me Mum's 85th & we've got no images of these particular places. Cheers.
