I know this an old video but recently purchased a 3018 prover V2 and upgraded the spindle as you did and trying to wire as you did. On the new main board I don’t have the 0-5 v plug as yours does. Can I not plug that plug into the spindle plug?

@lanierje

The 10k is a light load for the power supply. I don't like to run switching supplies with no load. It is probably not needed. The link connects the slot detect 1 and slot detect 2 pins to the output negative. This is needed to enable the power supply. See the beyondlogic.org review-huawei-r4850g2-power-supply-53-5vdc-3kw

48v × 10amps = 480w so thays fine... What about using 80v ×6amps = 480w Whats the difference in preformance.. You're still 20watts under its rated and 20watts under the OEM power supply. I assume with 48v and more amps it runs slower than 12k rpm but has a higher torque The OEM is 0-100v at 5amps. Voltage is usually attributed to speed and amps is torque 🙃 It would be cool to get you to do an experiment with the different supplies to see what the difference in preformance really is. I'd like to see the rpm of your spindle tbh. Also why did you jump 100k ohm resistor to the 50v output ?? Like thays doenst make sense. You're pulling up to 50v through 100k resistor.... what in the hell ?

I just got a 4040-pro and picked up a 500w spindle for it. They made a custom control board for this unit and disappointingly they did not break out any control signals. So you only have the main 0-24vdc spindle control to work with. Doable certainly but not as nice. No other digital outputs that could used for other accessories either. The 500w spindles power supply is the type that has a dedicated input of 0-10vdc for Mach3 control so a simple voltage divider should work ok. I'd prefer something with some isolation tho. The lack of any standards for these desktop systems is a problem that would be simple to address. Some standard signal levels and matched impedances. Really, given how powerful micro controllers are now and how easy tach feedback is to process, for a few dollars these interfaces could be made all digital. Maybe use I2C or RS485.

The loss of speed control is one of the biggest barriers to me upgrading, my spindle, so it is interesting to see exactly what the input looks like. I was toying with the idea of a digi-pot. One thing though, do you not have stability problems with using the variable output voltage as a pull-up - in the sense that if the output voltage wanders higher, it increases the voltage on the pull-up, increasing the demand voltage which increases the output voltage etc. And similarly if the output voltage wanders downwards.
@lanierje
@lanierje 8 месяцев назад
If you do the math you will see it is stable. High value of pullup resistance vs much lower source impedance. Also at lower voltages it practically dissapears.

Thanks for the great video, I have a few comments and questions. First, I am able to control spindle on/off through software without the relay. Should I be able to do that? Second, the spindle is meeting the same rpm's through software without the resistor.(Tested with a laser rpm tester) Will this have an adverse affect over the life of the spindle. thanks in advance.
@lanierje
@lanierje 8 месяцев назад
Without the relay, the motor can stop but there may be a few ma of current flowing. I prefer to turn off the power supply. The pullup resistor allows full output voltage from the power supply. Only a few volts different and a few RPMs higher. The pullup compensates for the moderate output impedance of the driver.

Thank you for posting such an informative video! I have a Genmitsu 3018-PROVer V2 that I would like to do the same thing to, but the control board is different. There isn't a 0-5V connector on the board anymore, and instead, on the right side there is a 3-pin laser JST connector (12V, Ground, PWM,) for a laser, and a 2-pin JST connector for laser air assist (M-, M+). Any thoughts on how to work this magic on the new board? At the very least, I can connect to the original spindle wire to enable the on/off software control, but I'd love to eliminate the potentiometer so the RPM can be software controlled as well. THank you for any additional guidance, and thanks again for putting this out there for the rest of us!
@lanierje
@lanierje 9 месяцев назад
The 0-5V can be filtered PWM. You could just build an RC circuit to filter the PWM. You would need to know the PWM frequency to select your filter cutoff frequency. Filtered PWM is DC with some ripple.

Hi great video hope its not to late to ask a question as i am fairly new to cnc and a real noob at electronics and am a little confused. There are 3 diagrams between the video, notes and comments, video had no pwm filter, the other 2 did but on has a .47uf capacitor and the one from the notes has a 1uf capacitor with a 100 ohm resistor. so do i follow the one from the notes with the resistor and 1uf cap? i see there are different types of capacitors and resisters, which would be recommended?? ex ceramic capacitor? ex 5% 1/4W Carbon Film Resistors? any other helpful tips on wiring pwm filter... that wasnt shown in the video... thanks
@lanierje
@lanierje 10 месяцев назад
In most cases a .47uf capacitor across the control terminals will be fine. Try that before you install a series resistor. The type of capacitor is not critical. 1/4 watt resistor is fine if you use the RC filter.

Are you willing to share how you arrived at using a 100K resistor connected to the output of the power supply and not a smaller resistance connected to the +5vdc pin on the pot connector ? Also, why 100K? Nice design, I am getting ready to implement a variation of it on my system. Understanding your choice on the pull up resistor would help. I am concerned about voltages >5vdc to the board if the 100K fails shorted or its resistance drops significantly. I have seen resistor values drop with age/abuse a couple of time over the years.
@lanierje
@lanierje Год назад
The value was calculated by use of Kirchhoff laws. You can't use a smaller resistor from the 5 volt supply because the 1K source impedance (even at zero) can't sink the reference. The calculated 100k provides additional current to the reference in order to allow full output. At lower voltages it becomes less relevant. The power at max in the 100k resistor is .02 watts. Metal film resistors are very stable.

Very nice video, it's also a bunch safer since I've noticed that some of the power bricks for the 500W motor, the adjustment potentiometer is referenced to mains which could give some shocking results if something were to fault with the grounding. This takes that possibility entirely out of the loop.
