I had a veteran friend who drove a half track with the 7th Armored Div. in April of 45'. he was driving prisoners up to a British POW camp near the Baltic coast. There was just him and his co-driver and every few miles a group of German Infantry would flag them down to surrender. He was scared at first, but they were genuine guys looking for haven from the Russians. By the time he arrived at his destination there was no room anywhere on that half-track, not even the hood. The Germans kept all their weapons and when they dismounted, their officer in charge had them all fall in and drop all their weapons. The British had them strip to the waist and looked for SS tattoos on them. Many SS dressed in Heer (army) uniforms of enlisted men. Bob said he always carried extra cigarettes with him on the few weeks he did these prisoner swaps. The return trips were the same thing, dozens of Germans coming out to meet them on the road. Strange times those last few weeks were in Europe.
He had an aura about him, and intensity even when calm. His eyes were piercing. These were only his physical traits. You combine it with his orator skills, it's no wonder he was able to sway as many people as he did. The whole look and philosophy of the NSDAP was extremely enticing.
There was a story that one tanker, artillery or AA officer told a war recorder in 1975, who was brought back to train the West German troops, after the fall of the USSR he was shown a picture by either Mossad or a French agent the story gets weird about a chemical researcher from the SS that was chief in chemical warfare, nobody knew his name, but his work kept on showing up in the Middle East, with gas grenades that had cyanide that had the same compositions as the one in the gas chamber, he told them "when a man, tells you the names of your parents, wife, siblings or children there is no choice"
Most, if not all, were just thankful to have made it through the war, and not dying like so many of their comrades in arms. Just soldiers, that most, were just following orders
