Unnatural Causes, for the first time on film, investigates the sources of our huge and alarming socio-economic and racial inequities in health. The four-hour series sifts through the evidence suggesting that there's more to our health than bad habits, health care, or unlucky genes. The social environment in which we are born, live and work profoundly affects our well-being and longevity.
The series broadcast nationally on PBS in spril 2008, and is now available on DVD from California Newsreel, www.newsreel.org
Typical RU-vid racism in these comments -- bring up any sort of racial issue and the most annoying ignorant bigots will show up, screeching about "obvious genetic differences" and "it's all in their heads" or whatever conservative radio's been spoonfeeding them lately. It is simple logic that racism exists and does real harm.
Bad Sugar was Produced and Directed by Métis-Ojibway filmmaker James M. Fortier, originally from Ontario Canada, raised near Chicago, and based in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1983.
This video is typical of many Black neighborhoods in the south, including early housing developments and public housing projects. Many public housing projects are being demolished today because they were constructed on coal ash waste and incinerator ash waste landfills and fill dirt. Many redevelopment projects and so called enterprize zones are designed to clean up toxic waste in minority neighborhoods. The HUD HOPE VI program secretly cleans up toxic public housing. my daughter was mixed and i am white. there may be stress also. lifestyle may be a big part. lack of good medical care. i drank lots of soda not knowing caffeine had a big part of early births as well. who knows why.
when the nuclear fallout came from the vapourization of 2 islands, the fallout and ash fell like snow. the children were excited cuz they saw pix of snow before and began to play and make angels in the nuclear fallout. other big disasters were chyrnobyl in the ukraine when a nuclear power plant melted down. or union carbide in india which was a toxic gas leak, these disasters made alot of generations sick and killed many more all of which happened long ago and are still apparent problems today!
I believe the strong extended family structure and exuberant cultural life of Mexicans in particular is the main factor. Living among many immigrant groups in Chicago, I can plainly see this robustness in Mexican American families. How remarkable.
Hey, Am an Native American, Yet, am Rocky Cree, Living in Canada. I want to share something with you, in how it's affected us, the same similarities has also affected us not as individualsbut as a community. In the early stages, When a White man gave Alcohol to a native in return for Furs, ( Fur Trade ) it has destoryed are way of thinking. In whats important to us now. It's the greed, inside of us, but for an native itis what I get from it. Over what we really need!
67 device That is so horrible . God Help people of the Marshall Islands from sickness that is gonna affect there hold life, " Is because of the Atomic Bomb they drop.
Kudos to the creator of this video! Well spoken, poignant, beatifully photographed and very educational. Maybe if enough people could see these things something could change like ... how about the government honoring just one of their treaties made with the native americans? Is that too much to ask?, that our government have just the smallest amount of honor?
There is always corruption where money is concerned, and the gifts of the government to set traditional against modernist indians has always been a sticking point. Assimilation or anihilation was the order of the day (and still is). Refined sugar is worse than cocaine in its addictive ness..and most things are now pumped so full of it.. take look at many american kids on the whole to see the results of a generation brought up on coke and McDonalds. "The Shit Generation"
Because war makes money... helping poverty doesn't help the rich.... Ethnic cleansing....the "white" authoritarian system that runs the show would rather see the red man just dissappear...its reminder of guilt for them. But they are still here.. strong peoples.... with values that we should all learn from. Thank you Don Warne for your truth, and for posting this video...I hope the 1029 people that have viewed it learn.
What you say has some truth, many problems are created from within the indian population. This is a result of a concerted genocide by the authorities that created the USA., who feared the Red people. What we have now is the result of 500 years of a slow torture of a peoples. Ethnic cleansing. It does nt have to be like that, but it will take much work and the end of what is known as assimilation trying to make red people white. "Crows do not need to be Eagles"
In regards to jnnfrgbly's comment please understand that my people are speaking because this is a HUGE issue. Even today, in 2009, we still can't go back to live on bikini island because the water surrounding it is still contaminated and the food as well. It may be a small islands but it's still our home. Also the other reason why compensation is such a big deal is because we still have elders and young that have medical problems. Please look at this from our point of view before you judge.
Not pseudoscience, serious researchers were involved in these studies, with peer-reviewed research results. The results are alarming. The question is, what can be done to improve the lot of all americans?
