Craig Charles also was on to star in Coronation Street and Robert Llewellyn starred in the Stuart Ashens movie Quest for the game child so both did great things after Red Dwarf 🎉🎉
This is one of the gems one would find on PBS in the 90s here in America and I dare anyone to describe the show to a first time viewer its wild and fantastic
I’m thinking Carlton from fresh prince of brllair as rimmar. He would add a certain up type feel. Dan ballzarian as “ Cat” . And Harvey Levin ad “ holly”
It seems the American version tried too hard. It's almost as if the writers watched the original series and thought, "the US audience won't understand that joke, so we'll change it, dumb it down or try to put an explanation in the conversation". As for the cat being female, that's a big mistake. The original cat was self obsessed and was an unwilling participant in practically anything that didn't involve fish or fashion! The dynamics change completely making the cat female. When we get American comedy in the UK, it's not changed, we either love it or hate it. We don't need it explaining to us. If we don't understand the references sometimes, if the writing is good, that doesn't affect the hilarity of the moment. When you have to explain things in comedy, it's no longer funny and completely misses the mark and that is what has happened here. When you look at comedy, the best laughs come from the unexpected, a bit like jump scares. If you have to set up the joke it has less impact and quite a lot of the time the audience is at the punchline before it arrives and is therefore underwhelming. Sometimes this works, if used skillfully for a bigger laugh further along, but "dumbing down" from the start, will kill things off quite rapidly. I dread to think what an American version of The Young Ones would look like!
The best bit and most Red Dwarf-y, to me at least, is the reading the fire exit sign joke. I genuinely laughed heartedly at that, so I am assuming that was a Doug Naylor or Rob Grant input, does anyone know? Really hate how they had Jane Leeves' hair and the fact that you can see the top of her neck irritates me, just breaks the immersion. Other than that, it wasn't as bad as I had thought it was gonna be so I am thankful you uploaded it and that I finally had the stomach to watch it! Thank you!
What a mess. I assume they couldn't show Robert Llewellyn in this version because of copyright issues. Maybe The Office is possibly the only comedy remake from British originals that actually works but really with the dire future that television companies are looking towards the time might be right for American money to finance British projects.
One of the best series to ever be made in the world, and what makes it so great is the cast is made of individuals from all around the light entertainment industry mixed with writers/producers/director of great comedy series
😮 just looked this up cause i can't imagine hos personality outside cat. I am truly shocked he isn't American... Kinda proud he's british but need a new favourite yank now, i guess keanu will do.
I’ve just come to watch this failed pilot after watching the attempt at a US Only Fools & Horses. Americans do heart really well, but they struggle with subtle wit.
2:01:04 “he’s the kind that likes to tie you up” yeah, but. He’d get down to it. Yvonne McGreuder would be lying down waiting for him and Rimmer would be gauging different types of rope, testing the tensile strength and pros and cons of a nylon weave or a more traditional rope. And then consulting his book on knots. Yvonne would get bored and wander off and Rimmer would come round a few days later and realise what’s happened.
"You come from earth? Do you know a guy called Harry Johnson?". Not sure americans would get that since that's what they do when they find out you're from the UK.
The fucking laugh track, as if there were people there, and the jokes were funny, or we needed hints on when we were supposed to laugh. They turned Red Dwarf into Sitcom, Generic, Stupid.
