I am sorry for the delayed reply - I need to update my notifications. To answer your question, yes I do still love this machine. I have used it for quilt piecing and binding, embroidery, free motion and machine quilting as well as other projects. The only thing that it is a challenge is super heavy duty sewing, like home dec, thick bags etc. which is understandable - as that type of sewing does better on a semi industrial or heavy duty purpose sewing machine. If it is your first experience with a Bernina computerized machine, it does take a little time and patience to learn the features, but once you do, it will be hard to switch to another type of machine. My favorite features are the easy interchangeable feet - just flip a lever to switch out. I also love the press and release to remove the needle plate to easily clean under the feed dogs. There are memory combination stitches that can be customized, the presser foot hover is amazing. The needle up/down with the back of the foot peddle is convenient and finally the jumbo size bobbin. It really helps for a pleasant sewing experience. I hope you love it as much as I do if you get one.
@@makeanddecorate it’s ok, you have a busy life. I liked your video about how you explained the bernina. Many other RU-vidrs had problems from bernina due to a bad motherboard. Although, it sounds like a great machine. I actually decided on a juki instead because the feet for the bernina are super expensive and because where I live, the techs do not like to fix them. So, a juki was less expensive and the feet for it are inexpensive. Thank you for explaining all of the above. I hope someone will find your response useful.
@@craftynurs3434 yep, Bernina feet and everything are pricey. I am sure you will be happy with your Juki, also a favorite of mine. I have a Juki TL2010 (straight stitch mechanical machine) and love it!
@@makeanddecorate I have the juki f600 and thinking about the juki tl qvp 18 in the future for heavy duty sewing. I've seen others in my fb group sew leather on it. I think I will like that machine very much.

Your instructions were clear. I like your basting tips. I'm going to try this out on my fabric. I did wash and dry the fabric and then ironed it out.Your blanket looks very professionally sewn. I'm assuming you used a 3.0 stitch when sewing all four sides, right? I also, will use a 70/14 needle on my machine for sewing.

I used stitch number 4. Bernina calls it the “running stitch”. Then I adjust the stitch width and length to be wider and longer, around 4.5mm. Happy quilting!😊
Thank you! Yes, I absolutely think a new needle at the beginning of a quilting project helps a lot. When I notice the thread breaking or pulling out of the needle, a new needle usually does the trick.

Great job! I loved the videocast. I like seeing the guest along with things you are working on. I also really enjoy the regular podcasts though because I usually listen while I sew. Videos and tv distract me so I don’t get as much done. Although sometimes it’s nice to just sit and watch them during morning coffee too.

Thanks for the tip! I do not have the 5mm stitch plate. I have the 9mm and I increase the stitch width a lot - which might exceed a 5mm plate. I have heard that it is good to have both stitch plates, especially if the stitch width is under 5mm wide...less fabric pulled into the stitch plate.

Jackie FitzGerald thanks Jackie! I do enjoy my 780 and I later added the embroidery module to it. I love it all but I do miss 2 features from my 820 - the clock and the bobbin indicator - it shows percentage of bobbin left once it gets to 16%. I got spoiled with those little features. LOL😂
I use the adjustable seam guides on my walking foot. So on a border, I would line up the guide on the seam line where the border and quilt meet. Then each serpentine stitch I do from that point becomes the new spot where I line up the seam guide to follow. for example, if you want the serpentine stitch to repeat every inch - line up the guide one inch from the needle to the end of the guide. If you do not have the adjustable seam guides, you can draw guide lines in chalk to keep the stitch lined up.
Yay!!! You must have the Janome straight stitch machine. I love having a straight stitch machine and the narrow foot is a huge multi-tasker...I sometimes can use it for zippers too - if the zipper tape is wide enough :) Thanks for watching and for commenting here!

Thanks! This “non fuss” tutorial was exactly what I was looking for. I love the basting stitch tip. I always hate constantly measuring while ironing so the basting stitch will save me a lot of time. I’ll be making my swaddle blankets out of jersey knit. I’m a little worried about the machine stretching the fabric as I sew. I would love some quick tips about how to prevent that. Thanks!
Hi Miranda, I'm so glad you like the basting tip - it's so much fun to not have to measure the hem! The jersey knit will do better if you use either a stretch stitch or zig zag stitch - they stretch with the knit fabric without stressing the thread. Also don't pull the fabric too much as you sew - that will definitely stretch the fabric out. If you use a serger, you can do a three thread wide overlock all around the perimeter and double fold that over, press and then top stitch (with a stretch stitch or zig zag) - that would make the process even easier. Have fun with the swaddle blankets!
I really enjoyed your video. You have a lovely complexion. I live in Arizona so I couldn't go to the Sew Sweetness retreat but I would have loved to. I think that Sara, Danny, William and Violet make such a lovely family. They all seem so very nice. I have made a few of Sara's bags and find them so easy to make because she has step by step videos on a lot of them. Your little hammer has a screwdriver you haven't found yet..LOL. You did a great job on the bags you made and I love your fabric choices. I have black, blue and red cork fabric but I haven't had the courage to cut into it! It's such a lovely fabric but pretty pricey.

Yes! Violet is the same age as my niece who I have been teaching to sew. Both of Sara and Danny's kids were manning the registration desk at the retreat, and they were the best - very knowledgeable and professional for their young ages!! They both helped me pick out my cork roll gift :)
