Meat Langar When Bibi Amaro went with her uncle-in-law to meet, Amar Das, to meet Guru Angad, they were taken to eat Langar, Mahima Prakash (1776 CE) describes it as follows: ਲੇ ਚਲੇ ਸਾਥ ਲੰਗਰ ਕੇ ਮਾਹਿ । ਸੰਗੀ ਸਗਲ ਬੁਲਾਏ ਤਾਹਿ ।They were taken to the Langar Bibi Amaro and Amardas, and Guru Angad called all the attendants to serve them. ਮਾਸ ਭਇਓ ਸਿਧ ਰਸੋਈ । ਅਵਰ ਦਾਲ ਭਾਤ ਭੀ ਹੋਈ ।Amongst the food was meat and other types of lentils as well. No One Can Forsake Meat "No One can Forsake Meat" - Guru Hargobind Gurbilas Patshahi Chevi 1718, records how Guru Hargobind tells Jetha about the story of Guru Nanak visiting Kurukshetra on the day of a Solar Eclipse, where Guru Nanak asked Bala to bring meat and fish and then cook it. The Brahmins of Kurukshetra saw this and were upset at Guru Nanak, saying that this was an inauspicious act, Guru Hargobind tells Jetha here how they questioned Guru Nanak: ਕਿਆ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਮਤ ਕਉ ਭਯੋ ਧਰਯੋ ਮਾਸ ਇਹ ਵਾਰ । The Brahmins saying "What kind of philosophy do you have, that you would eat meat on such a day?!" ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਪੂਰ ਜੇਠਾ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਸਭ ਦਿਜਨ ਕੀੰਨ ਉਚਾਰ ।੧੬੯। Guru Hargobind saying "Listen Jetha, they were full of anger when they questioned Guru Nanak. ਚੌਪਈ । ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨ ਦਿਜ ਕੈ ਬੈਨਾ । ਰਿਸ ਨਹਿ ਕੀਨ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਸੁਖ ਐਨਾ । ਪ੍ਰਥਾਇ ਤਾਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੀਨ ਉਚਾਰਾ । ਸਲੋਕ ਮਲਾਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰਧਾਰਾ ।੧੭੦। Guru Nanak listening to this did not reply in anger but peacefully, and to explain to them he recited the Saloks in Raag Malaar ang 1289 of Adi. ਦਸ ਪੰਦਰਹ ਜੇਠਾ ਸੋ ਜਾਨ । ਅਰਥ ਸੰਕੋਚ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਧਰ ਧਿਆਨ । ਤਾਂਕੇ ਮਾਨ ਨਿਵਾਰਨ ਹੇਤਾ । ਭਾਖੇ ਬਚ ਗੁਰ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਕੇਤਾ ।੧੭੧। He recited these 25 lines oh Jetha, listen to the meaning of these lines, he recited these lines to destroy their pride, such was Guru Nanak, the house of Grace. ਦੋਹਰਾ । ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮਾਸ ਅਧੀਨ ਹੈ ਮਾਸ ਤਜਯੋ ਨਹ ਜਾਇ । The essence of the Shabad was to say All the world is subject to Meat, no one can forsake Meat. ਸੁਨ ਪਾਂਡੇ ਇਹੁ ਮਾਸ ਕੀ ਉਤਪਤ ਜਗਤ ਦਿਖਾਇ ।੧੭੨। Guru Nanak said to them, Oh Listen Pandits about Meat, and showed them the origin of the world was through Meat. Everyday you eat beans and grains, oh friend, why would you not be afraid of him? Also my Singhs, adorned with many weapons, have been victorious in whatever large battle they've been in. ਸਭਿ ਮਾਸ ਅਹਾਰੀ ਬਲੀ ਬੀਰ । ਬਾਂਕੇ ਸੁਠ ਨਿੱਡਰ ਅਧਿਕ ਧੀਰ । ਹਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਮ ਹੈਂ ਸਮ ਮ੍ਰਿਗਿੰਦ । ਵਹਿ ਕਹਾਂ ਬੈਸ਼ਨੋ ਮਤ ਗਜਿੰਦ ।28। We are all meat eaters, strong warriors, beautifully constructed, fearless with great determination. We have the name Singh, equivalent to tigers, what is this Vaishno thinking which is like a drunk elephant? Tigers are known to disperse elephants with ease Later the Guru says: ਪੀਓ ਤੁਮਨੈਂ ਪਾਦ ਪਖਾਰੈਂ । ਭਿੱਖ੍ਯਾ ਮਾਂਗਿ ਅਚੀ ਪੁਨ ਜ੍ਵਾਰੈਂ ਹਮ ਖੰਡੇ ਕਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਛਕ੍ਯੋ । ਕਰਿ ਅਖੇਰ ਬਹੁ ਆਮਿਖ ਅਚ੍ਯੋ । You drink the water after washing the feet of others, then you go begging for the grain you eat. We have relished the Amrit of the Sword, in hunting we eat tons of meat. ਤੁਮਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾਸ ਸਿਲ ਪੂਜੋ । ਹਮ ਅਕਾਲ ਬਿਨ ਲਖੈਂ ਨ ਦੂਜੋ । ਹਮ ਮ੍ਰਿਗਿੰਦ ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਅਨੁਰਾਗੀ । ਮਤ ਗਜਿੰਦ ਸੋ ਕ੍ਯਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ । You worship stones and have the names 'Servant', we recognize no other besides the Deathless. We are like Tigers, loving weapons, so what is this renunciate thought, which is like an elephant? Meat Eating Satguru Around the city of Kare, near Allahabad, a devotee named Maluk Das was eagerly waiting to meet Guru Tegh Bahadur, but suddenly changed his mind when he heard that the Guru had just come back from hunting with his Sikhs. ਕਹਯੋ ਬੈਸਨੋ ਮਤ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੋ । ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਾਸ ਅਹਾਰੀ ਹੇਰੋ ।੧੬। He thought, "I am a Vaishnavite and vegetarian, but I've heard Satguru Tegh Bahadur is a meat eater. ਕਰਨਿ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਤਿਨਹੁ ਢਿਗ ਜਾਨਾ । ਹੈ ਅਸਮੰਜਸ ਮੈ ਮਨ ਜਾਨਾ । ਬੈਠਿ ਸਦਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਿਮਰੋ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ । ਗੁਰੁ ਬਡ ਮੈ ਲਘੁ ਨਾਹਿਨ ਸਮਸਰ ।੧੭। Well now I don't think it is appropriate for me to go and meet them, I should just sit here in my house and meditate on Hari - Guru Tegh Bahadur is important, and I'm worthless, we are not equal. ਜਗ ਮੈ ਕੋ ਦੁਰਬਲ ਕੋ ਮੋਟਾ । ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਲਾਭ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਕੈ ਤੋਟਾ । ਪਰ ਕੀ ਕਹਾਂ ਬਿਚਾਰ ਕਰੀਜੈ । ਬੈਠਿ ਸਦਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕੋ ਸਿਮਰੀਜੈ ।੧੮। In the world there are powerful and weak people, some people receive a lot of wealth and some are poor, why should I think more about this? I'll just sit at home and meditate on Prabhu." ਮਿਲਿਬੇ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨਤਾ ਤਜਿ ਕੈ । ਬੈਠਿ ਰਹਯੋ ਘਰ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਿ ਕੈ । ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਜਾਨਯੋ । ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁਨਤਿ ਭਰਮਾਨਯੋ।੧੯। Maluk Das thought about this and left any desire to meet Guru Tegh Bahadur, he just sat in his house meditating.
