Thanks Laurie. I'd guessed Menzies wasn't named after the yet to be born, Robert, but knew nothing about it. I love the mountains of SE Australia, but, honestly, driving through Menzies would hammer home the fact I'm on holidays. The Mallee interests me because it's an enigma. Thanks for the video. 🇦🇺👍
Certainly a bit of difference between the SE of Oz and the Goldfield area of WA. Most of our mountains are an extension of Asia down the East Coast. We have a few smaller ranges in the West, but up North they tell us is one of the oldest areas on Earth ... I would have thought it all happened at the same time 😅
I miss those days even as little as 7 or 8yrs ago you could go out there and have good fun the dunes were way bigger than the ones at wilbinga i reckon
Thanks Betty. That's our business. Would love to have more people watching, but they seem to like the self indulgent vids ... ooh, did I really say that 😂. "Coming from Australia" ... where are you Betty?
I wonder what happened to the Waychinicup access road? It is a stunning inlet and a great campsite for tents. On Wikicamps it has a review from 1 month ago so access must have been possible then. Maybe the rain closed the track for a while. If you get the chance, head out there, it is beautiful.
G’day Laurie. A long time ago the Midland Company Railway Company ran from Watheroo to Walkaway. Walkaway is not that far from Greenough. And yes, I have seen that area in flood. Thank you for the memories.
G'day Stanley. Yes, once upon a time, we had railways all over the state ... all gone. Just imagine how many trucks we could get off the road, and how much greener it would be to get trains back on the freight routes. A couple of Diesel/Electrics could tow at least 60 trailers piggy backed onto flat cars and use a whole lot less fossil fuel as well. It'll never happen. :)
@@lauriekibblewhite Just a bit more useless trivia for you. Up until I think it was a late 70’s all country freight was hauled by train. And in fact grain silos were built no more than a day’s travel from the farm gate. I think you and I are around the same age so you might remember that. Getting back to the Midland Company, I drove trains in the late 80’s/early 90’s on that track.
Been going to Bali since 1995, this film is so much better than modern youtubers make. Old school of just filming what you see and not making it about the film maker
Thanks Laurie. I'm guessing the Wittenoom family would have seen Greenough. I read about this pioneering family a while ago. Does Sir Frank's portrait, with cigarette in hand, still adorn a Men's Club in Perth? Times have changed. It's all new land to me, and therefore, interesting. 🇦🇺👍
@@mort8143 I've never been to the Weld Club. I think this was current in 2006. adb.anu.edu.au/biography/wittenoom-frederick-francis-frank-9292 Cheers Laurie.
Thanks Laurie. I had no idea this type of country existed in Australia. Had I watched your video without any information, I might have guessed Nth America or South Africa. They have goatsheeps as well. 🐐🇦🇺👍
Escorted a swimming pool here in the mid 90s in the middle of summer. I also took the family as we were going to stay overnight in Esperance. Checked the weather report and found out it was going to be about 8° and took some warm clothes. Unfortunately the guy towing the pool and his son only came down in shorts and T-shirts.
Thanks Laurie. Another rural town hanging on. Kids off to the big smoke for work, never to return and settle. I feel for those remaining. I've no doubt all these places have their own charms, even if they're just memories. Let's hope these villages are still here next century. 🇦🇺👍
LOL. I knew what they looked like. Did the train trip in 2007. Also, we saw plenty when we filmed our Trans Australia Railway video. I actually drove up there especially to film this segment for the main video. Hope all is good with you. Laurie.
I would love to Gabby. I've been keeping an eye on how the rains have rejuvenated it. Unfortunately, weather patterns, and government departments have a habit of stuffing things up I feel.
Thanks Laurie. Driving is a passion of mine, but watching your splendid video gives me the urge to ride my mountain bike along such a lovely road. Simply smelling the countryside, and listening to the bird life. Beats sitting inside watching TV hands down. 🇦🇺👍
You should check out the Great Southern Hwy. It follows the railway, and has far less traffic than Albany Hwy. If you haven't already seen it check out this film I made between radiation shots for prostate cancer in 2017 when I should have been resting LOL. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F0K8ZSiOczw.html cheers mate, Laurie
@@lauriekibblewhite Will do Laurie. I love the little country towns and communities. I must check them out in more detail like you do rather than just driving through. I hope you have recovered from your prostate cancer. 🙏Cheers
I think the Shell is the one with the vacant block and the LPG tank next door? I was escorting a swimming pool down that way one hot summers day in 2007. I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this story on your channel before, but the wind was blowing from the north, very hot and very strong. I stopped to fill up on LPG and thought to myself while I was there, I would have a leak instead of walking up to the garage. I had just finished up and put the gear away when I was covered by maybe 100 or so bees being blown by the strong wind south. My young son was with me at the time and was going to grab a blanket and try and brush all the bees off when they just took off with the wind apart from the two that stung me the neck. I’m guessing that the bees ended up in the southern ocean, becoming Fish food.
Heavens, that would have been a bit traumatic, especially for the young fella. And thank goodness you got the old fella put away or it might have been extremely traumatic 😁. Are you still escorting, or are you well retired from that? I've got a mate who is an escort, mainly on the north west run. cheers, Laurie.
I'm pleased you had a good experience. The town has changed since I first went there in 1963. My dad was a cop and was the relieving officer back then, and as a 16 year old I went out to stay with him for a few days. The locals really looked after me back then as well.
That's one mof the reasons I decided to do my Country Back Roads series ... so many roads we drive past and wonder "What's down there", but never take the time to have a look. It's well worth taking the few minutes to have a look at this historic town as you go past. Cheers, Laurie
I thought I would use the dash cam to capture some extra B roll driving footage on our last trip. I got some really nice stuff too especially around the Stirling Range. Then I got home and accidentally deleted the lot just before I backed it up <sigh>.
Man, I did that with Hawaii. Filmed the trip including my daughters wedding. Got back, produced the wedding, and thought that I had downloaded ALL of the footage (the camera had onboard storage) and deleted it. <&^*##$%&> One definitely needs a sense of humour to do this job... or be masochistic at times. 😒
@@lauriekibblewhite the ones you put up on the screen for us to read while you are driving down the street, you cut each one off before i had time to read that's all.
@@MrLeslloyd gotcha. I do try to make sure of that, but yep, sometimes a bit short. Meanwhile, maybe pause the video to read them. Also some people read quicker and slower than others, and of course the brain needs to register that something has popped up that needs reading, then its gone. Point taken. Thanks for commenting. Cheers Laurie.
@@lauriekibblewhite Pausing for me doesn't work unfortunately because I've got Chromecast and the bottom half of the screen disappears,if I were to use my laptop yes i can do that.Hey not a big deal,I dropped into Iron Knob back in 1978 on the way to WA.
@@AugustusOmega There is no Optus coverage across the Nullarbor, Only Telstra. Telstra is the only telco to use when travelling outback Australia, with just a few pockets of Optus. Use Telstra or Boost (which is the only Telstra carrier with full Telstra coverage). The other Telstra carriers have only part of the Telstra coverage.
geeze we live in a boring country, even if you love cattle, bugger all to see, red dirt, mud, scrub, 250 bucks diesel a day, no clear rivers, give me Europe any ole day
