This book is nuts. I remember flipping through the wedding scene at the bookstore and I knew I had to buy it. As someone who was absent from the states during COVID this was surprisingly informative. It was pretty much the gateway into a whole bunch of other indie comic artists at that point.
@ 50:59 Ed hits the nail directly on the head. Something I would argue FAR less talented or prolific individuals in comics will EVER understand. Rather, we're stuck with the likes of @alexdecampi & neckbearded Villalobos'es that are still around offering NOTHING to the actual community other than kangaroo courts & witch trials. Ed deserved more and better. As a comic book fan NOW: Fuck comics.
Hi Shira! I purchased Red Rock Baby Candy in 2021 and recently picked it up again. I am blown away (again) by the breathtakingly beautiful artwork. Thank you for sharing your stories and your art. Wishing you the best from an old friend. (Melanie)
some short time before the COVID struck the world, I had finished reading the definitive biography on AL CAPP and his creation of LIL ABNER. Have to see this done with Little Lulu in my lifetime and it should be tentatively called ALWAYS A FLOWER GIRL, NEVER A BRIDE.
Somehow I missed this interview when it was posted a year ago. What a great interview! I could listen to RKJ and Eric talk comics forever. I’ve been a fan of RKJ since Night Fisher came out. A brilliant first graphic novel. He’s now at the top of his game (which puts him in the top handful of cartoonists working today in my opinion). Hope to see some more comics for him in the near future.
Got immersed in Halcyon! at the library the other day. It really evoked, and maybe invoked, the sublimeness of William Blake. Can't wait to check out some more of Ron's work.
It was an amaaazing ride reading this day by day back in 2020. I remember I just recently have discovered megg and mogg like 6 months prior to covid, when bad gateway was the new one. I became obsessed with the comic, I love it, and read almost anything I could fins at the time. So reading a continuous story day by day was fucking great. I kinda miss those days
“Fantagraphics Books publishes comics for thinking readers - readers who like to put their minds to work, who have a sophisticated understanding of art and culture, and appreciate personal expression unfettered by uncritical use of cliché.”
I remember Meg Mog and Owl childrens books from the 1970s, by Helen Nicholl and Jan Pienkowski, has this creator bought the rights, coz stylistically they're very similar, content wise I don't know.
I regret that never I got to "Thank" John Stanley for the hours and hours of laughter and entertainment his Little Lulu comics gave to me as a little girl. Also the vicarious trips to far away places I could never afford to really go, such as Australia , France, Japan, Alaska, the summer Camp vacations, the swimming pond stories. The colorful funny Artwork, unique colorful characters. In a day and age the 1950's when Comic books were frowned upon as junk, instead your comics gave me a Love for Reading that has followed me all my life. Thank YOu so so Much Mr Stanley for making my childhood so much happier and also teaching me lessons about the good in helping others and being kind..
