How long do you tie the rigs before putting them onto winders? Please reply for waggler, stick and bolo rigs. Thanks in advance.

Mostly 6Ft, heavy sticks longer , depends how deep the water you fish is. Deeper water longer rigs

Great video Steve loved it Boss to see a top angler fishing the way I love to fish. I also think the one you done on the Stick float on the Avon is one of the best I’ve seen. I’m off to our local river Douglas to catch some dace and maybe a chub now , so keep up the good work

Great to see a new video Steve, I have been looking forward to seeing another one for a while. Re- re-watched the flat float one only yesterday. Is that Arley/Highley Country Park area? I never fished up there but have been by on the train many times and on my bike once or twice. I only fished down by Stourport (Lickhill) and would love to fish up that way one day soon. I appreciate the work that goes in to making these when really all you want to do is fish but we all learn a lot from them so please keep up the good work. Thanks

Hi Steve, by my estimation 0.18 mainline is way bigger than three to four pounds. Did you mean 0.15 or 0.16? Your 0.12 hooklength equals about three and a half pounds breaking strain in old money? Yes? I can’t be doing with line diameters. Can you just confirm the sizes of line you were using, please? Cheers. A great video by the way. A fabulous afternoon that I am keen to emulate myself.
@SteveMaher-ft5xx
@SteveMaher-ft5xx 26 дней назад
The old lines are massively wrong on stated diameters, nothing wrong with them, they're still very usable when you know their true diameter This vid I used Preston Pro Float diameter 0.18 is 4lb

I know what you mean about needing the line to break when youre in a snag. Trying to break the line when youre stuck in a snag whilst using 15lb line and your thinking to yourself is my bale arm going to snap. 15lb line breaks nearer 20lb and its a nightmare when youre snagged up

A lot of the lads I fish matches with on the Tees use the Preston accu power in 0.14 for the stick. It floats well and comes off the reel nicely. Always put a bit of grease on the line for three foot above the float, makes a big difference

Hello Steve, excellent explanations of what float to use as the peg dictates. Do you have a rod preference for your stick float fishing and have you had any line behind the spool issues in windy conditions with those TDR reels?

Isn’t it a sad indictment of today’s anglers that after three weeks this video has only had 2550 views and 70 likes? There is more pleasure in catching ten pounds of river roach, for me, than catching two hundred pounds of commercial carp. The state of today’s rivers, with many being flooded and virtually un fishable for four months of the year, may be a major contributor to the demise in river sport, but commercial fishing has taken a heavy toll. The challenge on rivers is firstly "will I catch?" whereas the challenge on commercial venues is usually "how much will I catch?" It’s still fishing, but not as we know it. (Paraphrasing 'Bones' on Star Trek there. If you don’t recognise that you are almost certainly a person of the ‘commercial persuasion' and rivers are an unknown to you"). It is almost impossible to persuade the average angler that river fishing, where the reward might only be five pound of tiddlers, is SO much more enjoyable than catching carp. And stick float fishing is fishing in its purest form.

that big perch will come out the net about 3 1/2lb by the time its ate all those little dace. dont like keep nets😐
@Crustysmith
@Crustysmith 4 месяца назад
I think Steve has earned the right to use a keepnet to enable him to show us his catch at the end. MILLIONS of anglers own keepnets and use them on a regular basis. If you don’t agree with keepnets why not take it up with the government to see if you can get the law changed. I am sure the MILLIONS of anglers will agree with you. Until then why don’t you keep your opinions to yourself rather than spouting off in the comments of a perfectly innocuous and pleasing fishing video?

That perch is going to eat small fish, whether it's in a keepnet or not. If it eats Steve's dace it'll spare others. Nature doesn't share our humanitarian sensibilities

Interesting video Steve. When choosing river floats when and why would you use a particular patten ie stick, loafer, avon or Bolo ( fixed or sliding). Presumably there’s a fair amount of overlap? For instance is a Drennan wire stemmed avon not similar to many larger shouldered stick pattens? And have bolos made avon pattens redundant? Best regards JJ

Hi Steve where do you get the big leads to modify your black caps from.They would be ideal for my fishing on the Thames. Living down south I have never seen any thing like those in our shops.
@SteveMaher-ft5xx
@SteveMaher-ft5xx 6 месяцев назад
The feeder weights were available in tackle shops in Worcestershire. You will find the Anchor feeder weights will fit perfectly, try searching for dead cow feeder weights on ebay. I've had my collection of extra weights for a long time so may be difficult to locate, shops in the tidal trent catchment or Nottingham may also be able to help.

@SteveMaher-ft5xx
@SteveMaher-ft5xx 6 месяцев назад
The rods a Free Spirit 13ft Hi S power feeder special. Reel is a Castizm. Shimano make excellent feeder reels in the Aero range, the Preston Extremity is excellent also. Only one rod is required at any time get the feeding and balance right and you'll catch way more than anyone trying to use two at a time.

Brilliant Steve really enjoyed that. I've starting match fishing on the middle Severn and I've had 7 out of 10 dnw . This is because I've been fishing for barbel and chub and they haven't been showing unless you're on the barbel flier pegs. This video makes me realise i need to change tactics. Many thanks

Fascinating watching how a matchman tackles a flood. 20 lbs of anything is good going. I would be tempted to hold the groundbait bucket between my legs off the ground if I used a drill to mix it as any fish nearby would feel those vibrations and leg it.
