Set in the early Thatcher years, Top Girls is a seminal play of the modern theatre, revealing a world of women's experience at a pivotal moment in British history. Told by an eclectic group of historical and modern characters in a continuous conversation across ages and generations, Top Girls was hailed as 'the best British play ever from a woman dramatist' by The Guardian. - from goodreads
Interesting to note - a terrace house in south east london back in 1982 was twenty two thousand. And the wage quoted here is nine thousand. So in terms of being able to buy a home, these women were in a ALOT better position than women of today in the same job, due to unaffordable housing in London.
"wondershare" as in, I wonder why you'd think something with annoying text plastered to the middle would be worth sharing? (full disclosure: was hoping this was just the play)
OK, if no one's gonna be the honest asshole around here it might as well be me: (takes deep breath) This play reads, looks and sounds like the inane ravings of a feminist, with NO IDEA of what makes a good story, attempting to write an intellectually gripping and satisfying play. She practically tells us that this project is a mishmash of THREE ideas (not to mention the multiple themes) instead of a simple ONE. Pathetic.
A modern classic, one of the most successful plays commercially and critically of the last forty years, enormously influential -- and mr jerk-off from nowhere thinks it's not a good story and wants to share his insights with the world about that.
I agree. It makes much more sense to make the second scene first. It makes it easier to perceive why the protagonist ended up this way. Staging would’ve been somewhat complicated, especially with the transition between the interview and the dinner scene and back to work. But I can see it if they focus a spotlight on a simple table and two chairs in the corner of the stage where the transition can be made quickly.
I'm French, and I studied this play :) at first, I didn't like it but when you read it and watch it at the same time it is completely different and I think I changed my mind ;)
Marelene's struggle with the Force battling the Starship enterprise illuminates the startling work of J.K Rowling and her completely eloquent writing that will surprise even the most hardcore Anime/Hentai Fan
ConorD couldn't agree more. I think JJ Abrams' lens flare technique really highlighted the struggle Marlene faced in earning civil rights for black people in America in the 1600s
Luis Gonzalez that is completely correct and the inclusion of the Power Rangers really worked well with Michael Bay's use of intricate character structure that drew from Tolkein's source material
Luis Gonzalez How dare you! I thought that was completely justified in the use of Dipsy's character change with hurbis in believeing she could play both the Rebel Alliance and the Empire against each other - it was always going to end in disaster!! Tinky Winky's death was on the cards and we all knew it!!
@@SuperBabyStudios I agree with you, but the scene at the first is not repeated later in the play, it was moved to the beginning for TV. Caryl Churchill approved the change, said she thought it worked better but that might have been her politeness. I like the original version -- that said, I took a friend to see this live, and actually, if this first scene had been first, instead of the restaurant scene, my friend would have understood the play a LOT better. It is good to recognize though that, like you say, the canonical version of this play does begin at the restaurant
Love this, I am so blessed to be performing as Isabella and Joyce (don't forget Mrs Kidd lols). #MeLoveCaryl. Jesus has truly blessed me with a great opportunity.
