As the sun only sets true south on the Spring & Autumn Equinox, this will only give an approximate southerly position at the other times of the year, but good enough for general navigation.
I just enter the (true) shadow azimuth (of any shadow nearby) into my phone, as well as read my location and then out pops the TIME ! Of course, I could also just read the time in the top left corner of my phone.

When we were kids me n some my friends would make these out of sowing needles and use simple straws and run around the house just pulling them out of our chest and arms putting them back in the straw and sending them into someone else. Never think of the danger when you’re young.

Wouldn’t a match be easier? That really doesn’t work because you can’t get enough friction heat long enough because you have to stop if you have a bow with kindling and a stick and starter block. It will work but not that way LOL
