To prepare the areas that will be used for striking or used for blocking. I am preserving the old ways of training that has worked for many years, and including some more recent training methods. Please don't confuse the old ways of training to the diluted modern methods that avoid many types of Hoju undo. To prepare your tools for the job of defending you and your family is what many of the martial arts is about. Let's not confuse the winning of cups and medals with the real effective martial arts. Disclaimer: MKDIOS122, Dave Naughton, Cannot be held responsible for any injures to any person or persons who attempt any of these drills without supervision of a suitable trainer. Your trainer (Sensei) should provide you with a good Dit Dow jow; this should be applied before and after training. This training takes many years of practice, if you cannot follow this advice please DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS TYPE OF TRAINING.

I trained with Steve. First in the 90's in Mansfield by seminars organised by Alan Jones. Then at Horsham intermittently until the early 00's. Have been to a few of his seminars and spoke to him since. Great memories. Thanks for putting up the vid and photos Dave.

I was in Shaolin Kempo Karate for six months on and off, and six more months. I never qualified for white belt or yellow belt, because powerlifting was my mainstay. Sadly, I pulled a ligament during punching drills and never really did well at powerlifting or karate later on

I wish Steve's missus would bring back the original website they had over fifteen years ago, with all of the phenomenal articles. I used to spend many a night reading them. It was wonderful watching Steve make waves online then turn his back on it in equally rapid fashion by virtue of him concluding it was just full of fantasists. I hope the guy is doing well. I and many others appreciated both his thoughts and the effort Trish put into bringing them to a wider audience.

I wish he'd had a chance to spar with Akio Takahashi in the 70's in Japan, Both had a hard knock down style, both were feared fighters of their time, both with boxing and some judo if i'm not mistaken. Would have been a great fight. So sad that they are almost unknown,. Sensei Steve was way ahead of his time.

Meanwhile, people who actually risk their lives and livelihoods on their ability to punch and avoid punches would say he has taught himself to throw a shitty punch for SO MANY reasons. 1: He is leaning way too forward into every punch. He will probably lose his balance if his punch misses. If you parry his punch by pulli it forward you could easily put him on the ground. 2. He is teaching himself to leave his fist out there after he punches. You need to retract your pubched immediately and hes not doing that. A thousand repetitions every day to instill a bad habit that will get you ko’d by people who actually fight. 3. What is his other hand doing? Its not defending his chin. Not defending anything. Hes not even practicing that awareness of what that arm should be doing, so AGAIN he is putting in thousands of repititions of bad technique. This guy has trained poor technique for decades... yeah he can probably hit reasonably hard and his hands are all deformed from “conditioning” but in a punching exchange he will get ktfo by a boxer with 1/8 his years of experience.

I'm saying hes right but expert karate guys can kick your legs and control that distance (Machida in the ufc) and blitz attack with punches after kicks so it depends on the quality of boxer or karate practitioner. Straight up boxing and boxer wins.

Back in the 1980's, in Japan, I had to hit the Makiwara 200 times each night with each hand. The purpose wasn't for conditioning so much, but to learn to punch straight, with fists flush to the makiwara straw. I discontinued this practice some years later when I became much more aware of repeated trauma injuries likely to lead to athritis, I have it away

There is a point in this video that you see the 1st Chojun Miyagi Sensei Festival. It was a memorial service festival I.O.G.K.F students world wide to come and train during the late 1980's. There were many Goju-ryu karate instructors from every corner of the globe that attended this event. I was their as a representive for the United States. Black Belts: Sensei Kazuo Terauchi ( Japan), Sensei Juichi Kokubo & Sensei Sangranetti (Japan & Peru) Sensei Kato ( Japan), Sensei Bakkie ( South Africa), Sensei D.May ( New Zealand), Sensei G. Andrews & Sensei P. Coleman (England), Sensei Paul Enfield ( England, Okinawa, & USA) all came to San Diego, California at the Holiday Inn came to live at the same roof. The event was called Gashhuku, which means live together and train together as one. I used to have a video tape of the whole event taped from Joe Jennings owner of Panther Productions. It was a rare time in history and the start of I.O.G.K.F World Instructors coming together as one. In time countries like Russia, and China would join our team to complete the largest Goju-ryu and Karate organization in the world. I am truly grateful and blessed to say that I was one of hundreds to attended this 3 day seminar and memorial tournament.
