I think you did a pretty solid job on SoundCloud rap. Even nailed it by placing it sideways lol I wouldn’t know how to peg it down myself and i was a big fan at least from the time YT was filled with all those color inverted videos of a 3 second anime clip on repeat for crazy aggressive 2 minute xxx songs

the Indie Folk scene that was big around 2013-2016 I think you def should’ve mention people like Mumford and Sons Of Monsters and Men, Fleet Foxes, The Head and The Heart, Milky Chance, Vance Joy ,Hozier, Imagine Dragons and many others were a big influence in 2010s Also for the Pop Synth genre groups like M83, MGMT, The Naked and Famous, Passion Pit, Miike Snow, Foster the People, Empire of the Sun, Grouplove,Two door Cinema, Phoenix and Matt and Kim just to name a few

i think a genre that was missing could be Corridos Tumbados, it has gained international notoriety in the 2020's thanks to Peso Pluma but it has been in the making in Mexico since the 2010's. Could see it as taking elements from regional mexican music called Corridos, more specifically from Sierreño, which features the instrumentalization of the genre and hip hop culture the word 'Tumbado" from its name refers to the style pf hip hop culture, according to Natanael Cano, one of the first and most important makers of thw genre it was mainly inspired by trap flows and production Theres a video by amazon music called Corridos tumbados feat. Natanael Cano about the genre explained by him it has evolved a lot but it has remained its elements of using instruments of the region but lately it has notoriously added more polished production and more instruments, especially brass, which contrasts with its bedroom-esque beginnings. it has also been dwelling and getting mixed with more elements of electronic music. if i could choose some albums id consider important to the genre they'd be - Corridos Tumbados - Natanael Cano ( it's a collaborative album between various artists of the genre signed by Rancho Humilde but it's mainly driven by Nata) - Mi Vida en un Cigarro - Junior H (First album release by Junior, an importamt artist of the genre, he has focused on a more melancholic approach to the genre, some fans even say some of.his works give off the same vibes as Lana del Rey) - Tu Veneno Mortal - Eslabón Armado ( Eslabón armado is one of the first groups to feature brass isntruments more predominantly, which is a defining characteristic of.the genre in its modern form) - Del Barrio Hasta Aquí - Fuerza Regida ( a group that has gained more notoriety in the latest years collabing with various artists outsude of the genre) - Genesis - Peso Pluma (singles from this album have made the genre international and has locked its sound to what it's considered now, even giving them a show in the tonight show and a feat with kali uchis)

I absolutely love this video! But you should look up how to pronounce words like "reggaeton" (or any others that you've only ever seen in print) before you read them out loud. Keep making great content

I appreciate the comment! I'm a Spanish speaker too so Reggaetón comes naturally to me, but when I'm speaking English it's always been Regga-Tahn. I can tell you I've heard a lot of white non-hispanics pronounce it this way, so I assumed it was the 'natural' American English pronunciation. But based on the number of comments I've gotten about it, maybe not so 😅.

Some additional info: Vaporwave was inspired by Houston’s hip hop scene and a genre popularized there called “chopped & screwed” that would edit songs by slowing them down and repeating them. Hyperpop was also partially influenced by futuristic swag, a subgenre of trap that emerged in Atlanta in the late 2000s that tried to create a digital, autotuned sound to complement an early internet era.

Interesting that retrowave is considered a 2000s genre (I genuinely have no idea how it was perceived in public until Drive and Tron basically and I was a Valerie nutgobbler since 2006). Maybe I should do a vid on Valerie and it's incredibly massive impact on the music industry and get some of old pals like Anoraak to speak more and how he feels seeing Weeknd and Dua Lipa make billions

i think for the hyperpop section it should’ve been split in two. the sophie/a.g. cook pc music camp and the ayesha erotica hyperpop camp. both produced sound landscapes for various artists under their sound and the label hyperpop being made to distinguish music made outside the pc music label.

The internet did more bad to Zambia than anything else. In the 70s into the 90s all musicians were singing live and playing instruments in bands. We had some of the best talented musicians, guitarists and drummers. Sadly all that talent died and with the internet our music has never been the same.

Mentioning XXXtentacion and Yung Lean but not Bones/Xavier Wulf or $uicideboys… Those two camps and the hype they stirred (along with lean and lil ugly mane) are what collectively sonically bridged the gap between cloud rap and SoundCloud rap. The hype that SESHOLLOWATERBOYZ, and G59 both generated from ‘13-late ‘15 lead to a lot of attention being brought to a sound that music journalists and critics noses started following and that record labels tried turning into something more shiny and accessible (literally what record labels in the late 90s/early00s saw did to 90s hardcore/emo and tried churning it into your Fall out boys/scene shit) and lo and behold it, it imploded with that XXL shit.

I think in this era, people rarely focuses on hiphop or rock, this is the time where EDM Subgenres pop out a lot. Moombahton (EDM Reggaeton), Jungle Terror (Final Boss of EDM Festival genre), Uptempo (crazy fast 200+bpm kick that existed since 2012 now sounds like piep zaag), Future Funk (as in the video), Vaporwave, Slap House, Witch House, Modern Lo-Fi (the chill girl for studying), Riddim, Tearout, Brostep, Hard Trap, Hybrid trap, Bounce Trap, Dark Trap, Festival Trap, Arabic trap (Get Low by DJ Snake), Rawstyle, Psytrance, Melbourne Bounce, Bigroom, Tech House and many more. IDK how much but believe me, there's more.

I don't need new music, i still listen to the same heavy metal bands i was into in the 80s: Accept, venom, iron maiden, riot, grim reaper, sodom, death, Celtic frost, amebix, anthrax, stormtroopers of death; def Leppard, candlemass ,dokken, slayer, Metallica, judas priest, black Sabbath, dio, deep purple, rainbow, ratt, annihilator, saxon, motorhead, the cult,, The only difference is that i stopped pretending to hate hair metal, (glam-tera is best-era) I was never into grunge i was too busy dancing to eurodance, i didn't have time notice hair metal died, since poison, motley crue, guns & roses & bon jovi continued having hits into the 90s, I mostly noticed that rock in general was replaced by rap, grunge quickly was replaced with ska, pop-punk & nu-metal, its all hindsight nostalgia that i noticed grunge being a big deal, but where is the love for ace of base?

I like to use the term aggrobass as a catch all term for gabber music & it's distorted 909 kicks & derivative styles of music like Hardvapour & hyperpop & trap-metal & ragecore & digital hardcore & hardstyle & dubstyle & witch-house & frenchcore & hardbass & happy hardcore & splittercore/speedcore & cybergrind

Without my negative view of my own DIY music production skills, maybe: people may be into my "gabber"ized latin freestyle & trip-hop that I was calling aggrobass But instead around the same time _hardvapour & hyperpop & trap-metal/ragecore_ was popping up making me paranoid that manifesting and simultaneous invention are real, And i have had mystical experiences, which concur with the commonalities between hasidism and neoplatonism, But without the baggage of "quantum taoism" But i can't prove either acosmic panentheism nor that my demos predate other people syncopating heavy distorted roland 909 bass kicks

I like these kinds of videos, but they area not researched well enough. I don't know much about dancehall, but bringing in Kool Herc as some kind of inventor of hip hop is pretty lazy researching. He didn't invent anything. He just had a sound system. Plenty of other people originated hip hop, who gets little to no credit, because everyone glorifies Kool Herc.

tbh I think it's really interesting how lots of these genres are sparked by the internet. Like, nearly all of them are heavily influenced by the opportunities offered by the internet. Without it, global music genres like Amapiano, Afrobeats, Neoperreo, City Pop Revival, etc probably wouldn't have been so widespread and people probably wouldn't have been able to share their own takes on it because of the opportunities offered by that quick communication. But due to the the rise of newer, updated technology, people also feel nostalgic for older vibes and aesthetics brought by stuff like 80s tech or the early internet, leading to stuff like Chillwave, Vaporwave, and those genres like "Jazz Jazz," Witch House, and Hexd that came after them
@kisawisa1769
@kisawisa1769 7 дней назад
Okay... to be fully honest I didn't like most of these, at least from the samples you played, but for the major genres you mentioned I have a few notes: 1. Afrobeat is a genre from the 1970s, the modern variant is more based in hip-hop with a uniquely West African twist so I wouldn't consider it a distinct genre, more like a style of pop rap or EDM or whatever the catchall umbrella term for vaguely hip-hop influenced pop is called. 2. Similar with Neoperreo for reggaéton, it's very much a subgenre or stylistic change. I'm nowhere near an expert in that type of music but for Arca to be considered one of these artists makes sense. It's very reminiscent of the dark industrial acts of the 80s who made use of a similar shift in mainstream pop. 3. Aesthetics aren't genres: vaporwave and chillwave can be influential as styles but I don't think they count as completely new genres but maybe movements within pop, rock, hip-hop etc.. In addition producers like Nigel Godrich were already making use of this hazy, atmospheric alternative sound as far back as the late 90s, so this to me really feels like rehashing those tropes and even disingenuous in some respects because I can hear that they used a lot of production to make it sound that way. Hypnagogic pop may be the better term to call the phenomenon you're describing. 4. Not a criticism but just an observation: I always saw cloud rap as more connected to Soundcloud, it's interesting to see it's origins before the popularity of that movement and how Clouddead had a huge influence, at least in terms of the atmospheric and dreamy production. 5. "Vaporwave" as a musical genre deserves a better name to it separate from the aesthetic because it was a separate phenomenon and I think that defining it by the aesthetic can lose a lot of what makes it what it is. Other than that great video, and I'm interested to hear at the insane rate music is accelerating what will come about in this decade.

i think idolrock need so be here. i think a lot of microgenres have been created in the jpop idol scenre in the 10's, but idolrock is the biggest. pretty broad collective name of jpop mixed with various harder rock styled music like punk and metal in the early to mid 10's but venturing into alt rock or shoegaze too later on. the most famous example would be Babymetal. but theres 1000ths of groups in that direction by now. Candye Syrup, Burst Girl, Not Secured Loose Ends, Broken By The Scream, Shiina Pikarin, 14th Generation Toilet Hanako-san, Passcode, Guso Drop, Kaqriyo Terror Architect etc. kawaii metal is a name used for some groups too. but obviously that would only include metal style ones but not even all since Necronomidol has nothing that would make them "kawaii" in their sound. so i never actually use that one. darksynth is a big one too. Perturbator preforming at huge metal festivals while not even being metal. and again one of those 80's vision scifi inspired sounds. like others have said Brostep is what we came to know as dubstep thanks to skrillex somehow. bit its way different from 00's dubstep so definitly its own genre. the name is horrible. but so is the music. uptempo is a new genre within hardcore house/gabber. having grown out of gabber in the late 00's coming back into it now i was surprised how shit it has gotten. but it seems uptempo it topping the charts now. i'll stick with the old stuff.
