Been riding riding Baker for 39 years now (1985), nothing will ever beat the early days of Baker. I found a couple old pics the other day from 85-86, one of the pics was my first time on a chair and the funny thing is it was a bluebird Saturday and there’s literally 8 people in the lift line. The second pic I found was of us on top of Hemisphere getting ready to drop in to the Canyon for our last run (it was getting dark out). In those early days we had the powder to ourselves, the skis were too narrow and just sank and since our boards didn’t have edges (yet) we loved the powder. I have so many fawn days of out on the Arm, some of the days we spent all day out there hiking huge wind lips (the perfect transitions), or making numerous laps and that was before chair 8 was put in, so the hike started at the top of 4/5, not chair 8 like today. If you can do it definitely camp out, I’ve seen guys just pitch a tent in the parking lot. Sad to say those days are gone, it’s far too busy and sadly no chance of expanding, I spend most of my days at Stevens now due to the shorter drive and very reasonable midweek pass, but the memories I have of rippin powder with the homies EVERY Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be with me forever. I asked to have my ashes spread up there, it is that important to me even at 58 and still rippin fresh powder
Love to hear about the early days, and man do we with we could have experienced those ourselves! Still managing to find some pretty awesome days up there mid week where you feel like you have the whole place to yourself.
Wow, insane. My dad and sis skied the chute often, i never did, they were the experts. My sis competed in bumps and arials, but I'm a chicken! Thanks for letting me experience through your camera what they always did!
As a Mt. Baker Local, I can assure you that the culture around the mountain is one of the coolest communities ever. The surrounding small towns feel so isolated, and the skiing is second to NONE. By far the best snow anywhere on EARTH. If you are deciding whether or not to go, this is your sign to book the trip.
powder days even weekdays it can get packed and huge lineups on chairs 5 and 6, getting on chair 7 to start your day can be another huge line, with many hiking to chair 5 now with the higher ticket prices of 91 bucks for a day pass people are really going to save up for the powder days so it will be more packed, the mountain on a POW day is pretty much skied out in a few hours, On the good side week day groomers on nonpowder days is very uncrowded and you feel like you own the place. Also when the temps drop in the low teens with no new snow it is very uncrowded, I don't ski weekends or holidays, Seniors with a pass, Baker is nice it's all we have and thankful
@@JukkaliMx At double the price no way, I’m riding Baker. I’d rather give my money to a family owned business, and Bellingham is more fun to party in then Monroe
Ahaha we know, we know...This was a one time piece to share the stoke. Outside of this if anyone ever asks, we'll tell them it just rains all the time.
@@snowledge I moved here in 06. Bought a pass that season and did prolly 30 plus days🤘🏽 Then we had children and my wife not so into mountain sports so it's been back burner since then. My 15 year old finally asked to learn this season and by God.. it's like riding a bike🤣 I'm back in the saddle and teaching him. It's fantastic
@@hawkwind769 right on, glad to hear your getting back to it! It's pretty amazing how quick it comes back. Have fun out there! Hopefully we'll catch you ripping around.
Very nice video guys. Last season was a fun time at WC. Your appreciation for the vibe is great and you do a great job of showing how much fun can be had.
Off the grid, no crowds, my buddies and I started boarding Baker 38 years ago and back then Baker was only open Fri, Sat and Sun, $17 tickets, absolutely no lines, maybe 15 of us boarders and skiers stayed out of the powder because their old school skis were too narrow to float. I have a pic of me on a Saturday sitting on the chair, but if you look at the lift line there might be 5 people.
Why is this guy being such a weanie?! Your getting insane early season conditions... you randomly run into an old friend and who seems to be a really cool dude who takes you for an adventure across the knife's edge and into virtually untracked tree skiing. "Its a nice resort if you're a beginner." "Its a nice place to work on the basics." "Its 12,000 feet and we're going to hike to snow nirvana.. Whaaaa!" C'mon dude! Enjoy your awesome life, or stop filming yourself whining.
I live near Mt rose and I used to ski at there until it got super crowded and expensive. You guys should check out soda springs, its not far from MT Rose it’s got some nice runs.
wondered what app did you use to check your top speed while you were still going down the hill ? i liked how you seem to see it/ the data pretty much instantly !... for about past 6 yrs i just use Strava but it only allows me to see my top speed for an activity after i end it later on and then sync/upload activities at the end of them when im all done.. and seems to only show me my accumulating distance and a current average speed and a running time total while its running during the process of recording my activities..
Hey Kurt, it's the Snowledge App. We've got GPS tracking, photos/videos, weather, and real-time resort info. We're working on building a Strava-like community for skiers around each resort.
i just spent last Tuesday skiing the Chutes there... snow was great so made myself a challenge to just keep going in there every run from my first until they closed them at 3:30pm and by then i was also getting thankful it requires the 2 lift rides in order to get back up top because by my last runs my achey old body was toasted !
