Everybody should be free to say no to a dance, it's your right. I am saying this as a man who has been rejected quite often when I started dancing and I had to learn: 1) Do not hold a grudge 2) Do not let the rejection affect your self confidence 3) Sometimes it's better to not dance with someone who doesn't want to. If you pay attention you can feel it in their movements and in the dance. As my friend Stephen says, "A rejection is just redirection". All said, you should be trying to have fun whatever your level and you also want a dance partner to share that with.

It's normal for people to understand things wrong until new pioneers succeed in pointing out better ways. Like when you'll understand collaboration and connection best if you drop the lead&follow concept entirely

Dance is a conversation! The best dances happen when both people get to interact through play, good communication and solid connection.

Interesting topic. I think it comes down to I don’t invite the follower to dance with me and then dictate. I think a good lead wants to really “see” the follower they are constantly inviting to dance with them throughout the entire song while being soft, clear, respectful, and playful. To accomplish that with respect to my the connection to my partner as well as the music and the room, I continue to work very hard figuring out how to over-signal instead of to over lead. Part of that is getting super clear about position, timing weight transfer, where to build and release tension, where to be sharp and where to be smooth, etc. I suspect I’ll be working on this until my dying day. If we can basically agree on that, my question goes to is there a way for the follower to signal (dare I say over signal) that they are declining the invitation to follow something the lead is signaling? Maybe the point is that the follower is kind of in the role of the one being seen, and the leader is in the role of the one seeing the follower so maybe the leads just have to be paying that much attention that no signaling is required? I don’t know. I can say I don’t have any good idea about how to train that other than to do a million social dances and know to soften your lead completely the moment the follower starts doing anything else. Maybe that should be more formally practiced?! But, in terms of safety, there are times you just need to protect your partner and you can see that it’s not safe for the follower to go off in the exact moment. Is there a better way to signal that than the big eyes I give them as my body starts to hijack their stepping away from danger? (Like when you see they are about to get crashed into)?

We'll all be working on clarity of messaging and adapting to our environments until our dying days. 😉 Higher levels of connection and two-way creativity require higher levels of attention, openness, and technique.

Magna you were always one of the nicest and most fun of the advanced dancers. Asking one of the instructors/performers to dance can be scary the first couple of times but you were always cool about it. BTW this type of song was always my top conformable tempo.

Great video! As both a student and a teacher of dance I totally agree. I always hate it when the teacher doesn’t set up the room for success, because it means that I have to endure distractions during a lesson I paid money to attend. The students so appreciate it when the teacher demands respect in the way you have described.

After a dance, how do you deal with people who want to be funny, but do something inappropriate or something that makes you a bit uncomfortable? I saw you kinda thought about it and then played it off- I’m thinking you maybe knew him enough to realize it mal-intentioned.
